The Whitemarsh Wake 1 The Whitemarsh Wake Volume No. 1 Issue No. 1 Editor: Mary Frawley (whitemarshboatclub@gmail.com) Whitemarsh Boat Club, 801 Washington Street, Conshohocken, PA 19428 www.whitemarshboatclub.org The History of Whitemarsh Boat Club Whitemarsh Boat Club was formed to meet the demand for access to the Schuylkill River by buying the property where Mount St. Joseph Academy's crew has been practicing for five years. Whitemarsh Boat Club, L.L.C., bought the property and now leases the riverfront section to the WBC, a nonprofit organization. Lois Trench-Hines has led this effort with her passion for Mount St. Joseph Academy s Crew by making this location a permanent rowing facility for The Mount and for other schools and colleges. Lois is well known in the Philadelphia area for her competitive successes from Boathouse Row, her indomitable spirit, and her longtime support of rowing. Lois has been a member of the Philadelphia Girls Rowing Club since 1965, rowed in a quad at the 1973 Moscow World Championships, and serves on the Philadelphia Rowing Society. She is married to George C. Hines, a Dad Vail Champion as well as a former champion crew coach at La Salle College High School and La Salle College (University.) Lois is the founder and CEO of Meniscus Limited, a medical education and communications company in West Conshohocken, PA. Lois recruited Gardner Cadwalader to join in this project. He has been active in promoting additional rowing facilities along the Schuylkill River and in other locations. Gardner began rowing at St. Andrew s School in Delaware, continued rowing at the University of Pennsylvania, stroked the Penn Varsity, and competed in the Pan American Games and the Olympic Games, the European Championships, and the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race for Cambridge University, as well as racing from several of the boat clubs on Boathouse Row. He also raced twice in the Grand Challenge Cup at the Royal Henley Regatta. Gardner was inducted into the inaugural class of the University of Pennsylvania s Athletic Hall of Fame. He has been coached by Davis Washburn, Ted Nash, Joe Burke, and Steve Gladstone. Both of his children began rowing at St. Andrew s School and have continued rowing at Harvard and Dartmouth. Gardner practiced architecture, has been a stockbroker, and is delighted, now, to help found this new boat club on the beautiful Schuylkill River.

The Whitemarsh Wake 2 Whitemarsh Boat Club Extreme Makeover

The Whitemarsh Wake 3 The President s Post I am very excited about being involved in the ground floor of Whitemarsh Boat Club. I have been around rowing since my husband, Mike, rowed for Drexel many years ago. And I have been around the Whitemarsh Boat Club facility for the past five years. My daughter, Erin, rowed for Mount St. Joseph Academy and my husband now coaches Mount Crew. I always watched from the river bank. Now I am rowing on the river, and I am not standing by watching others have all the fun. With being around the young ladies of the Mount crew team and their parents all these years, it was inevitable that eventually someone would say Why don t we take a shot at rowing. Now I am one of the men and women involved in rowing at the recreational level out of Whitemarsh Boat Club. What does Whitemarsh Boat Club offer you? Learn how to row as an adult who has never rowed before. Whitemarsh Boat Club provides a Learn-to-Row program for anyone new to the sport who wants to give it a try. (Watch out you may just get hooked!) Are you a prior high school or college rower who has not rowed in a while? Would you like to rekindle your rowing enthusiasm after being away from the sport for a number of years? Whitemarsh also offers opportunities for the more experienced rower. This is what Whitemarsh Boat Club is all about. Having fun with the sport on a recreational level and getting fit at the same time. We do compete in local Masters Events. Come to Conshohocken and see what we are all about and what we have to offer to men and women. Here in Conshohocken, the Schuylkill River has four miles of very good water on which to train between the Fayette Street Bridge and the Flat Rock Dam to the south. Most of it is very sheltered water. There may be whitecaps downriver near the Art Museum, but we usually have good conditions. For more information check out our website www.whitemarshboatclub.org. Mary McKenna President Whitemarsh Boat Club Captain s Log Welcome to Whitemarsh Boat Club. My name is Linda Hrycko and I have the honor of being Captain of Whitemarsh Boat Club. I am very excited to be involved with the renovation of our new facilities which will be home to our current and future members. Month to month, we are growing in membership and looking forward to accommodating the robust rowing community in our area. We are currently refurbishing some boat shells that have been donated to us or acquired. They are in need of repair and parts. We expect to have them available for use by early Spring 07. WBC prides itself as having one of the few Learn to Row Programs in the area. This year s Learn to Row Program has come to an end but will resume next year in early Spring. We plan to build toward a reputable Master s Program by growing our membership and gaining experience from other Master rowers. In 2006, WBC was entered in Independence Day, Quaker City, Kings Head, Navy Day regattas and Head of the Schuylkill, which, unfortunately, was cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. The Regattas were a lot of fun and great experience! We are very fortunate to have the generous help and direction of some wonderful people here at WBC.Meg Kennedy, Mike McKenna and many other individuals behind the scenes. Let me end by extending an invitation to all men and women who are interested in joining WBC and being part of our growth and success. I value and appreciate any suggestions that will help guide me in making WBC a place where everyone feels welcome and at home. Let us all look forward to the future of WBC and meeting the people who make this rowing community a very special one. I am always available to answer your questions and comments. Do not hesitate to contact me at bhrycko@aol.com Thank You, Linda Hrycko Captain Whitemarsh Boat Club

The Whitemarsh Wake 4 Anyone joining WBC for the first time between January 1 st and June 30 th will pay $200.00 for their initial first six months of membership. We will also offer a scholastic athlete summer membership (from May to August) for $100.00. Fees may go up after the new facility is completed. Membership One of the most important aspects of starting any new club is acquiring new members. Whitemarsh Boat Club is actively pursuing men and women of all different age groups and levels of rowing experience. For those individuals who have never rowed in scull or a shell, WBC will be providing learn to row programs (for a fee) to those interested in getting started. Rowing provides you with not only a fantastic low-impact, cardiovascular workout, it s also a fun way to meet new friends. If you have ever had the opportunity to attend a rowing regatta, you will see participants ages range from those in high school and college to masters level rowers who row well into their 80 s! Many rowers who started out sculling may want to try their hand in sweeping in a shell with 7 other rowers and a coxswain. WBC is offering both programs and also has opportunities for those who have their own scull and wish to rent space. The WBC membership thus far has developed from a group of individuals who had sons and daughters who rowed in local high school programs. After many hours of coaching and practice, we competed in our first event last fall in the Schuykill Navy Regatta and came in 1 st place in the Masters Womens 8+ event. WBC is a club that will foster both recreational and competitive rowing. FEE SCHEDULE The fee schedule for WBC is as follows: Memberships are renewed annually for the period from July 1 st to June 30 th at the cost of $350.00. FULL MEMBERSHIP $350.00 SCHOLASTIC/ATHLETE SUMMER MEMBERSHIP (MAY AUGUST) $100.00 Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a member of Whitemarsh Boat Club, please contact Helene O Neill at hmogolf1@aol.com. In this form of racing, competitors race against the clock and the crew with the fastest time is deemed the winner. Racing usually takes place in different categories (for different boat classes and abilities). The length of these races is usually between 3 km and 6 km. Boats are started at 10- to 15- second intervals. To minimize collisions, boats are usually seeded so that the fastest starts first. The two most well-known head races are the 4¼ mile (6,840 m) Head of the River race that takes place each March on the river Thames in London and the Head of the Charles race held each October on the 3 mile (4,828 m) Charles River in Boston, Massachusetts.
