37th Annual Bull Sale Monday, February 27, 2017 1:00 p.m. CST (Lunch at 11:30) At the Ranch 20453 Cendak Rd, Pierre, SD Watch videos at www.beastromranch.com & www.dvauction.com Greetings! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our customers and welcome any new ones. Without you we would not be able to do what we are passionate about, which is raising beef cattle. Welcome you to our 37th Annual Gelbvieh and Balancer Bull Sale. It has been quite a year for weather. It always seemed that we were short of rain, but as the crops came in we were truly blessed. The yields and quality were excellent and our calves came home from grass with some of the largest weaning weights we have ever had. I am sure we are all ready for a break from winter but we can count on plenty of green grass this spring. As we began preparations for the sale, I realized that this set of bulls are very thick over their tops, along with being deep and soggy ribbed from end to end. I don t remember having a set of bulls that have ever been this complete or uniform. As we continue to utilize our embryo transfer program heavily, it has given us the tools we need to produce bulls and females that are balanced and have the genetic ability to meet the demands of the our continuously changing industry. We put a lot of emphasis on cow families within this program, as you sort through this set of bulls you will notice a lot of references to production records of the females that raise them. We have continued to select for soft made, easy fleshing females backed by generations of growth and performance. We are excited for you to evaluate this sale offering and I think that you will agree this is a great set of bulls. Please join us on February 27th at the ranch to evaluate the bulls and visit with us about your breeding needs. If you are unable to attend the sale, the bulls are available for viewing at any time just give us a call or stop by the ranch we would love to take you through the offering. All sale lots have been videoed and are available for viewing on our website www.beastromranch. com or at www.dvauction.com. Hoping to see you for lunch at 11:30 on February 27th at the ranch. -Jim Beastrom Watch & Bid online at www.dvauction.com. register 24 hours in advance.! Crossbreeding is Smart and Easy with Gelbvieh and Balancer When making breeding decisions, smart cattlemen consider both the maternal and terminal traits of their breed of choice. The advantages of Gelbvieh sired calves are hard to ignore additional pounds and profit from more efficient and productive cow herds and heavier, faster gaining feeder cattle. Throughout history of the beef industry, cow-calf producers have turned to crossbreeding to increase efficiencies and profits. The advantages of crossbreeding have not changed. Regardless of your cow herd base, Gelbvieh or Balancer bulls get you to the profit center of the beef industry in one generation. Use of heterosis to improve production has shown similar advantages to that of hybrid corn in crop production. Numerous research studies have reported up to a 25 percent improvement in pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed when crossbred dams produce crossbred calves. There are three main types of heterosis: Individual heterosis is the improvement in performance by the individual crossbred animal above the average of its parents. Increased weaning weight, yearling weight and carcass traits are examples of individual heterosis in crossbred compared to straightbred calves. Maternal heterosis leads to the combined improvement in traits from the dam that cause increases in the performance of her and of her progeny. Examples of maternal heterosis in a beef cow include: younger age at puberty, increased calving rate, increased survival of her calf to weaning, longevity, and pounds of calf produced in her lifetime. Paternal heterosis is the improvement in productive and reproductive characteristics of the bull. Examples of paternal heterosis in a herd sire include: reduced age at puberty, increased in scrotal circumference, higher sperm concentration, increased pregnancy rate and greater servicing capacity. The greatest benefits of a crossbreeding program are through direct, maternal heterosis with a crossbreed cow increased fertility, better calf survivability, heavier weaning weights, and greater cow longevity. Crossbred females are 30 percent more productive over their lifetimes, said Dr. Larry Cundiff, Meat Animal Research Center (MARC), Clay Center, Neb. A planned crossbreeding program can add more than $1,000 over the life of a crossbred cow. Advantage of Crossbred verses Straightbred Calf Crop Weaned...8% Weaning Weight...13% Yearling Weight...4% Carcass Traits...3% Cow Lifetime Productivity...30% Lifetime Average Cow Dollar Impact... $1,000+ MARC studies have proven crossbred cows reduce breakeven production costs by as much as 10 percent. Other research shows the average crossbred female remains in the herd about two years longer. Using Gelbvieh and Balancer genetics in a simple, easy crossbreeding program adds productivity, longevity, and profitability with crossbred cows and hybrid bulls. Don t ranch without it.
