COACH S CONTACT INFO: Mike Schwartz Addison Teacher Boys/Girls Golf Coach schwartzm@addison.k12.mi.us Room #733 Work: 517-547-6978 Cell: 517-605-2296 BASIC REQUIREMENTS: 1. Athletes must have a physical examination on file in the Athletic Office signed by the M.D., D.O., Physicians Assistant or Nurse Practitioner who administers the examination certifying that the student has passed a physical examination and is physically able to compete in athletic practices and contests. 2. Athletes must have emergency cards filled out, signed, and turned in 3. Athletes must have transportation form signed and returned. 4. Athletes must have the last page of this packet signed and returned indicating an understanding of the requirements, rules, and expectations of the Addison golf team. 5. It is highly recommended that athlete has a set of golf clubs. If not, please let the coach know ASAP. 6. Athletes will purchase team polo shirts that typically range between $30-35. It is encouraged that athletes purchase a shirt. Athletes will then be able to keep the shirt (the shirt will be Addison colors, but will not contain any embroidery) PROGRAM GOALS: 1. Learn a lifetime sport that can be enjoyed recreationally and competitively well into adulthood. 2. Develop an understanding of the USGA rules in order to play the game with honesty and integrity. 3. Develop proper golf etiquette and sportsmanship to compete at the MHSAA varsity level and beyond 4. Provide a positive experience that focuses on individual and team growth 5. Promote the values of honesty, integrity, and responsibility. These values are fundamental to the game of golf and life. 6. Provide basic swing instruction in order to provide athletes with a foundation to develop 2

TRYOUTS (IF NECESSARY): Sometimes conditions warrant that tryouts be held. The following criteria will be used to determine the final roster. 1. Citizenship/Academic Eligibility Success in the classroom and good citizenship is valued by the Addison High School Athletic Department. Golf is a sport of honesty and integrity in which athletes call their own fouls. It is also a sport that takes place on private property, and not on school grounds. Because of this, it is important that Addison golfers exhibit outstanding character, attitude and sportsmanship. Grades, discipline referrals, attendance, and teacher recommendations will all be considered when choosing the final roster. 2. Athletic Potential Athletic potential refers to an athlete s future in the sport they are trying out for. As a golf coach, I am trying to achieve immediate success and build a foundation for the future. In order to find this balance, if a younger athlete has similar skills to an older athlete, the younger athlete will be kept as they clearly have greater athletic potential. 3. Fundamental Skills and Knowledge of the Game The overall fundamental skills of each athlete will be comprehensively assessed during tryouts. Students will play competitive golf and score will be kept and used as a quantifiable measure that shows overall fundamental skill. The coach will observe students in many situations to evaluate swing mechanics and knowledge of golf rules and etiquette. 4. Coachability An athlete s ability to follow directions, accept constructive criticism, take direction, work hard, and keep control of their emotions will be assessed during tryouts. It is important that athletes exhibit these characteristics in golf and in other sports. VARSITY LETTER REQUIREMENTS: 1. Varsity letters are awarded to any athlete who plays in 50% of varsity matches, or has score count in at least three varsity matches, district/regional/state match or other important tournament, and/or must be recommended by the coach. CASCADES ALL CONFERENCE REQUIREMENTS: 1. To be considered for All-Conference a player must play in a minimum of 5 jamborees and the conference meet. 2. All Conference Honors shall be determined by scoring average at conference events. 3

PRACTICE GUIDELINES: 1. Attendance at all practices is mandatory. 2. There will be consequences for unexcused absences. If you have an appointment, family obligation etc that will cause you to miss practice you need to notify the coach ASAP. 3. Practice will take place after school and will run approximately two hours. Roughly 3:30-5:30. 4. You are responsible for finding your own transportation to practice. If you are unable to get to practice, you will not be excused unless the coach determines circumstances to be out of your control 5. Practices will take place at Lake LeAnn Golf Course unless told otherwise. 6. Practice cancellations will be announced as soon as possible. Listen to the announcements. When in doubt, always show up! Further, be prepared for the weather conditions. Make sure you check forecasts during the golf season to be properly dressed. Items you should consider: an umbrella, rain gear, cold weather gear, extra towels, hat, gloves etc. 7. Proper respect and courtesy to all golf course employees, fellow players, members, golf shop staff, and coaches is expected at all times. 8. Lake LeAnn Golf Course allows team members to practice for free on their own when the course is open. Team members should inform the clubhouse that you are a member of the Addison golf team. This is an excellent opportunity for golfers to still practice on days when they are not playing in the match that is scheduled. Also, this is an excellent opportunity to play on weekends and during the off season. However, this is NOT AN OFFICIAL PRACTICE. It is completely voluntary. COMPETITION GUIDELINES: 1. Qualifying and playing position for matches will be determined by the coach and based on the following criteria: Practice scores, match/tournament average, recent practice and match scores (including qualifier matches), discipline and attitude, dedication and cooperation, scholastic reasons, teacher request/suggestions, lack of knowledge of golf rules. 2. Players that start the season on JV may move up to Varsity based on the criteria above. 3. Players that start the season on Varsity may move down to JV based on the criteria above. 4. Only 5-6 players will play in each tournament and match. 5. Transportation will be provided to all matches and tournaments. 6. A master schedule has been provided and shared with you through Google. Please check it for updates or when in question. Due to the fact that golf does not take place on school grounds, we have little control over our schedule. Due to this, it can often change. Please be attentive to schedule changes. It is YOUR responsibility to know the schedule. 7. You will often miss class time due to matches and tournaments. It is critical that you are proactive and discuss this with your teachers ahead of time. YOU are responsible for the missed work and material. Maintaining good academic standing is essential for your success at Addison and beyond. Golf is NOT an excuse for poor academic performance. Please discuss academic concerns with the coach before they become a problem. 4

RULES, EXPECTATIONS, and CONSEQUENCES: *Note Consequences are listed underneath major rules/expectations. A range of consequences are provided that are clear, specific, and logical. A range of consequences gives the coach the flexibility and the opportunity to evaluate each athlete and situation on an individual and case by case basis The coach has the discretion to choose which consequence best fits the situation in order to achieve the desired outcome. What is fair is not always equal. 1. Attendance: - Attendance is MANDATORY at all practices and events - Missing practice or an event will have consequences. Exceptions are made for pre-arranged medical or dental appointments, scheduled court appearances, death in the family or funeral attendance, illness, etc (proper documentations such as doctors, dentists, orthodontics, etc. notes may be required) - Athletes are expected to be ready to practice at Lake LeAnn golf course by 3:30PM - Any athlete, who is suspended, (either out of school or in-school suspension) for violation of the policies and regulations of the student handbook, will be prohibited from participation in contests or practices on the day the suspension is served - The coach should be notified at least 24 hours in advance of any excused missed practice. - If you need to miss a practice, you should talk to the coach directly DO NOT tell another player to relay the message - It is the coaches discretion to use the following consequences to deal with attendance issues depending on the severity and context of the situation - Consequences: Expectation is reinforced and explained, athlete must make up missed practice on their own time with signed score card and/or evidence of practice, athlete will lose playing position on the team, athlete will miss upcoming match or tournament, expulsion from the team. 2. Academics: - Athletes will be expected to maintain good academic standing in order to participate. - To be academically eligible, an athlete must have passed a minimum of 6 classes during the previous semester. If an athlete fails to pass a minimum of 6 classes for the semester, he/she will be ineligible for the entire next semester. Athletes must also maintain a minimum 1.5 GPA to be eligible for athletics. - Current Semester Eligibility Athletes must be passing 6 classes. Keep your grades up. You are a student first and a golfer second. You will often miss class time during golf season so you must be proactive in working with your teachers. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR GRADES - The coach has the discretion to keep an athlete in school as opposed to pulling them for a golf match or tournament. 5

- Consequences: Athletes who are determined to be ineligible at one of the grade checks during season will be ineligible for a minimum of one week and will not become eligible again until they have completed the eligibility requirement of passing 6 classes 3. Attitude and Etiquette: - At all times you are representing Addison High School and the Addison community. Take pride in this! - Lake LeAnn Golf Course allows us to use their facility for practice and competition. It is a privilege that we are allowed to play there so respect the course and the members at all times - Since golf is a sport where you call your own fouls, honesty and integrity must be upheld. CHEATING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE! If you are unsure of a rule, seek clarification. When you cheat, you cheat yourself and every player in the field playing honestly. Respect yourself, the game, and protect the field. - NO CELL PHONES during practice or matches. The only exception is toward the end of practice if you need to call for a ride. - Dress appropriately for practice and matches. Golf shirts and pants/shorts for matches. Jeans may be worn for practice, but must be in good condition - Please address coaches as coach, coach, or Mr.. - When playing in a match or tournament. Shake hands with the competitors in your group before and after the round. In addition, thank the coach hosting the tournament at the end of the event before leaving. - Please leave the course in the condition in which you would like to find it replace divots, repair ball marks, and rake bunkers. - Consequences: Rules and expectations are reinforced and explained, letter/email of apology to another coach or golf course, athlete will lose playing position on the team, athlete will miss upcoming match or tournament, expulsion from the team 4. Transportation: - Transportation will be provided to all competitions leaving from the school and returning to the school. - Transportation to practice can t be guaranteed and depends on availability of school van. Practice begins after school at 3:30 at Lake LeAnn golf course. It is your responsibility to find a way there in a timely manner. - Athletes should be picked up at 5:30 from Lake LeAnn. - Please read, sign, and return the transportation form. - *These rules and expectations may not cover every situation that may arise during the season. Because of this, the coach has the right to determine whether the situation will be tolerated and what the consequences may be Success in golf depends less on strength of body than upon strength of mind and character Arnold Palmer 6
