Tumbling Unit 6th grade: Individual assessments on skills. Maybe one/two passes with a couple rotations, balances, movements. I created a routine for them to use. This seem to give them options to just copy or modify. 7/8th grade: I gave them a 10 pt skills grade on forward roll, cartwheel, and back scale (students were assessed early in unit as they learned skills--some waited to end of unit as they needed more time to practice). Build skills up to perform a group project with group stunts: 20 pts (which included the written portion. Concepts Traveling Static balance Rotations Stunts Walk, run, skip, chariochi, slide, gallop, chasse, leap, jump, hop, back peddle, Push up / forearm plank, tee, candle sitck, v-sit, table, bridge, one leg (scales), head & hand stand, tri pod, etc. Partner and group pyramids. Jump turns, spins, pencil rolls, forward & shoulder rolls, back & back shoulder rolls, cartwheels, round offs, coffee grinder. Day 1 Rules: Safety Intro Tumbling: Concepts (Traveling, Balance, Rotations). Mat procedures. Roll out and in several days. Teach students how to flip mat. Put two mats together. Students still stay on one mat during warm ups. This will allow room for practicing individual stunts / rotations. No jumping, rolling on mats, going under mats, etc. Tumbling direction students move. No cross traffic! Create pathways/runways between mats for moving around gym. When do warm ups: Do Not run off matts (too slippery). Students may or may not wear socks. No shoes (I let the cheerleaders wear their cheer shoes). What is tumbling? (I mostly went over this with just 6th grade). Traveling/Rotations/Balance (dynamic & static). Traveling is our warm ups (skips, slides, chariochi, back peddle, etc..-- need to work on the jumps, leaps, hops, etc.). **Warm ups on Mats. Basic terminology (Salute, stand, straddle, squat, tuck, rocker, etc.) Animal walks across sideways: bear, dog, frog, seal, etc. Good to get students to practice taking turns (stunt practice) in their space.
Log/pencil rolls (if time). Day 2: How to warm up on mats. Normal warm ups, but down on their home matts. Salute to start jump stop-salute at end of mat. Add static balances after warm ups: push ups, tees (cross), sit ups/v-sit, straddles, table, bridge, cobra, scale, knee scale, yoga poses, etc. Emphasis complete static body control. Terms: tuck, pike, straddle, salute Begin shoulder rolls and/or forward rolls. Day 3: Continue warm ups with the static balances and stationary exercises (see video) Review shoulder and forward rolls. Students practice. Teach Cartwheel. Monkey turn is a good lead up to the cartwheel. Tripods, head stands, hand stands are more advance and can be added later as skill increases. Day 4: Continue with warm ups and exercises (this all good tumbling practice). I added donkey kicks to warm up. This allows them to lock elbows and get inverted. Review and practice forward rolls and cartwheels. Teach back rolls and/or back shoulder roll. I started assessing 7 / 8 classes on the basic skills (cartwheel across matt, back scale balance, forward roll coming back). Day 5: Review and practice. Teach: partner balances. Spotting, Base of support, focus (no laughing: muscles relax), don t step on middle of partners back, counter balance. Day 6: Intro rountines. 6th: hand out teacher pre-made individual routine 7 / 8: Intro group routine (hand out), students sign up with a group. I kept my groups max 6 students. I showed past (2) performances. Gave them 3 days to design and practice (some came in during lunch to practice). Day 7-8 : 6th grade: Individual routine assessments. When done, they may build partner/group pyramids, practice tumbling skills, or help peers. 7 / 8 grade: practice group routines.
Day 9-11 : Present projects Notes: Each day add and Create practice tumbling passes during warm ups with skills taught previously.
