2012 A remarkable year for DSR in NHRA competition The past year certainly was one to remember at Don Schumacher Racing, and while it will be challenging to repeat in 2013 that s the goal as DSR prepares for the PRO Winter Warm-up test sessions in two weeks at Palm Beach International Raceway in Jupiter, Fla. on Jan 18-19. Championship winning seasons by Antron Brown and the Matco Tools Top Fuel Dragster team and Jack Beckman and the Valvoline NextGen Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car team raised DSR s total to 11 NHRA world championships since 1999. While those are ultimate goals each year, the DSR contingent accomplished much more than that including owner Don Schumacher being voted into the 2013 class of the prestigious International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega, Ala. So the 2013 season already will be one to remember. Last year was dominated by DSR. DSR owner Don Schumacher, center, with his 2012 world champions Antron Brown and Jack Beckman after the duo won NHRA event titles at St. Louis. In Top Fuel, DSR ranked 1-2-3 at the end of the year and Antron just edged teammate Tony Schumacher and the U.S. Army team by seven points that kept Tony from winning his eighth Top Fuel world championship.

The DSR drivers were the only ones who ranked first in standings throughout the year with Antron leading the category with six titles followed by Spencer Massey s four and Tony s two. In Funny Car, Jack and teammate Ron Capps in the NAPA AUTO PARTS Dodge were separated by a mere two points the closest margin ever in the category after the Nov. 11 season-finale at Pomona, Calif. Ron won a category-best five national event titles, Jack won three and two were won by Service Central s Johnny Gray, who finished a career-best sixth in the standings. Matt Hagan s team made a late charge by going to four championship rounds over the last 10 races but was unable to win an event title and defend its 2011 world championship. DSR won 12 of the 23 Top Fuel titles and 10 of 23 Funny Car titles, and culminated with a $1 million payday on Nov. 11 when each championship team earned $500,000 bonuses for DSR. The ultimate season ended with DSR owning all four NHRA national records in Top Fuel and Funny Car, along with Ron producing the quickest Funny Car run ever (3.964, seconds) and Antron the quickest in Top Fuel (3.701 seconds). Rolling into 2013, DSR owns 196 national event titles and 11 world championships. The following is a timeline of DSR s 2012 highlights: JANUARY 18-21 The unofficial start to the season was the annual PRO Winter Warm-up at Jupiter, Fla., where the highlight was the public debut of the enclosed safety canopy on Tony s U.S. Army dragster. It was at that test session that a glimpse of how the season would end was shared when Antron s 3.794-second run at 323.27 mph was the quickest Top Fuel effort during exhibition runs while Jack s 4.037 (312.35) was best among Funny Cars. FEBRUARY 12 Spencer started the NHRA season of DSR domination by winning the NHRA Winternationals title at the season-opener at Pomona, Calif. It was the first of DSR s 12 event titles in Top Fuel. 19 Antron continued the winning streak by taking the title at the next event near Phoenix and made his first step toward the world championship. It was the second straight event when DSR

teammates filled the Top Fuel final round bracket; Spencer beat Antron at Pomona and Antron beat Tony at Phoenix. MARCH 15 Funny Car pioneer and team owner Don Schumacher was named one of 81 worldwide finalists for the 2013 class of the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Ala. APRIL 1 The good news for DSR was that Spencer won the TF title, but the bad news was that Ron and his team did not qualify for championship eliminations at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. That led to his crew chief quitting that weekend and DSR moving crew Don, center, with NHRA founder Wally Parks after winning the 1970 U.S. Nationals. chief Rahn Tobler and crew to Ron s team from Jack s team. 2 Veteran Top Fuel crew chief Todd Smith, who had never led a Funny Car team, was hired to become Jack s new crew chief. 13-15 It was a big weekend for DSR at Charlotte s Four-Wide Nationals. Spencer won the Top Fuel title while teammates Tony and Antron finished second and third respectively in the unique four-lane event. Tony became the first to reach 330 mph (330.30) since 2008 when NHRA shortened the race distance by 320 feet to 1,000 feet. Spencer set an NHRA national speed record at 332.18 mph that lasted through 2012. But no NHRA driver during the season mustered the worldwide media attention Matt received when the engine in his car exploded into a fireball. The incident occurred in the same lane he used to become the first to complete a Funny Car run in less than 4 seconds (3.995 seconds) the year before. Matt was interviewed by media in England and Australia, and countless television stations around the world shared the ESPN footage. On YouTube.com, the video was viewed nearly 1 million times. MAY 6 Ron wins his first event title with crew chief Tobler, and it was in the perfect location; not far from sponsor NAPA AUTO PARTS Atlanta headquarters. 20 Just two weeks later, Jack with his new crew chief and team stunned the drag racing world when their Valvoline NextGen Dodge

beat Ron s in the final round for the title near Topeka, Kan. 27 On what was to have been a weekend off before Memorial Day, Tony, Antron and their teams traveled to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the opportunity to put sponsors U.S. Army and Matco Tools, respectively, before a huge Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup crowd and perform crowd-pleasing side-by-side burnouts on pit road with NASCAR champion crew chief and FOX television personality Jeff Hammond serving as the flag starter. 31 Ron closed a busy month by completing a run in 3.964 seconds at Englishtown, N.J., that remains the quickest ever by a Funny Car. JUNE 3 Johnny drove his Service Central Dodge to his first event title of the season at Englishtown. 29 The episode of the vastly popular cable program Storage Wars entitled The Fast and the Curious aired with Antron guest starring to give show regular Barry Weiss advice on race parts Weiss bought at a storage auction. The segment was filmed early in the season during the Las Vegas event and Antron and Weiss remain good friends. 5 The fourth annual DSR Bowling for Children presented by NAPA fundraiser presented by NAPA to benefit Riley Hospital for Children and Riley Children s Foundation was held at Royal Pin s Western Bowl near Indianapolis. 17 DSR completed its first double of the season when Tony broke a winless streak of 32 NHRA national events by winning the Top Fuel title, and Ron won the Funny Car trophy at Bristol Motor Speedway. JULY 1 Don introduced as an inductee along with Rusty Wallace, Rick Hendrick and Dale Inman into the 2013 class of the International Hall of Fame at Talladega, Ala. Bruce Ramey, manager of the Hall, shared the vote results with a very surprised Don Schumacher and DSR teams, family, sponsors and friends on Sunday morning before the start of the NHRA Route 66 Nationals near Chicago, where Don grew up. Later that day, Antron won the Top Fuel title. 8 On one of the hottest race weekends of the season, Spencer won the Top Fuel Title at Norwalk, Ohio. 22 Antron and Jack kicked off the traditional West Coast Swing of three success events by winning their respective titles at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals near Denver. It marked the second event of the season when DSR drivers won both Top Fuel and Funny Car titles. 29 Antron made it two straight when he won Top Fuel at Sonoma, Calif., and Johnny s Funny Car title made it two consecutive weekends when DSR swept the nitro titles. At the track near San Francisco, DSR drivers took all four spots in the championship round when Spencer and Matt also advanced to the final round. AUGUST

15 NHRA approves use of Top Fuel safety canopy and Tony uses it during the Aug. 16-19 event at Brainerd, Minn., where he qualified No. 1 and advanced to the semifinals. Ron used a win over John Force in the championship round to take over the Funny Car points lead. 31 What would become a two-week, rain-delayed U.S. Nationals held a few miles from DSR headquarters in Brownsburg, started with the seventh annual Big O Tires presents the Don Schumacher Racing Open House to benefit Riley Hospital for Children. But the biggest star of the five-hour, fun-filled event was the annual silent auction in which DSR s sponsors and loyal NHRA drag racing fans raised the bulk of $25,000 that pushed the total contributed by DSR events to Riley Hospital to more than $200,000. SEPTEMBER 1 Spencer won a $100,000 bonus by winning the first annual Traxxas Shootout for Top Fuel Dragsters. 9 After rain washed out the first weekend of the U.S. Nationals, teams returned the following weekend and Tony won a record ninth Top Fuel title in the prestigious event. 9 After Indy racing, fields were set for the NHRA Countdown to the Championship and six DSR teams advanced to the top 10 in their respective categories. Antron and Ron were seeded first, respectively in Top Fuel and Funny Car. Matt, the 2011 Funny Car world champion, just missed making the top-10 by a mere seven points after waging a valiant comeback over the last seven races when he advanced to four final rounds and three semifinals. 16 After a week off, the Countdown began at Charlotte Motor Speedway s zmax Dragway where Ron extended his points lead by winning his fourth title of the season. 23 At the Texas Motorplex near Dallas, Antron won his fifth title of the year. 'The Sarge' and No. 9 30 For the second time in 2012, DSR put four drivers in the championship round with Brown winning for the sixth time and Jack posting his third win of the year to pull closer to Ron for the championship lead. OCTOBER 5 A visit to picturesque Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa., would become one of the most important events of the season for Antron and Jack although no DSR teams would leave with an event trophy. Jack started the onslaught on NHRA records when his speed of 320.58 mph set a national record. (There are no bonus points for setting NHRA speed records.) 7 Jack earned a critical 20-point bonus when he set the Funny Car national elapsed time record of 3.986 seconds. 8 Antron was the last and best at setting the Top Fuel elapsed time record with a stunning run of 3.701 seconds to gain 20 bonus points. Johnny s top speed of 319.45 mph was his career best.

Rain delayed the championship round to Monday and at the end of racing Antron had what seemed to be an insurmountable 104-point lead over Spencer and 136 over Tony, while Jack took the points lead from Ron by 23 points. 28 Ron won his category-best fifth title of the season and pulled to within four points of Jack in the standings. In Top Fuel, Antron lost in the first round while Spencer was eliminated the second round and Tony advanced to the championship round to move to second in points, just 65 behind Antron. NOVEMBER 8 The stage was set for a battle to the championships when the DSR arrived at Pomona, Calif., for the 23rd and final race of the season. 11 When championship eliminations began, five DSR drivers remained in contention for world championships with Antron leading Top Fuel by 67 points over Tony and 70 over Spencer. In Funny Car, Jack was two points up on Ron, who won his third pole of the year the night before. In the first round, a parts failure and ensuing fire ended Antron s day then a second-round loss eliminated Spencer from contention. But Tony marched into the championship round needing a win to post his eighth championship but he lost by 0.0081 of a second or approximately four feet to Brandon Bernstein. That made Antron the world champ and first African-American to win a major U.S. auto racing season championship. In Funny Car, Ron had to win one more round further than Jack to earn his first world championship after finishing second three times. But Ron s hopes were dashed early in the semifinals when he narrowly lost to give Jack his first professional world title to go along with the Super Comp championship he won in 2003 in NHRA Sportsman. Antron and Jack claimed world championships for DSR to match what DSR s Gary Scelzi (Funny Car) and Tony had accomplished in 2005. DECEMBER ANTRON BROWN Top Fuel world champ (AutoImagery.com) JACK BECKMAN Funny Car world champ (AutoImagery.com) 20 Antron and Jack led a sweep of drag racing honors for DSR on the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association s 2012 All-America Team. DSR teammates Tony and Ron were selected for the second team by a panel of motorsports journalists. (Top Fuel Dragster 12; Funny Car 10) 1. Pomona 1 TF Spencer Massey
