2017-108 South Lyon East COUGARETTES Traditional Pom Pon Club TRYOUT PACKET Please read all attached forms and bring completed paperwork and physical to the first day of clinics. Forms must be signed by student and parent. Tryout schedule. CLINICS- Monday April 17th and Tuesday April 18th 6:00pm-7:30pm East High School, South Lyon Michigan. Enter through Door 17 meet in Dance Room. YOU MUST ATTEND CLINIC TO TRYOUT. TRYOUTS-Preform tryout routine and skills in front of judging panel. Wednesday April 19th 2:30-5pm. (you will be given time slots). **** YOU MUST BRING A COPY OF A CURRENT PHYSICAL WITH YOU TO TRYOUT OR HAVE ONE ON FILE What is Traditional pon? Traditional pom uses two pom pons, pom pons will ALWAYS be two different colors. Traditional pom pom, shows the use of color from ripples and color changes using the pom pons. These are athletic based routines that encourage good posture and proper form; precise rhythm and timing; excellence of formations and transitions; showmanship; creative and visual choreography using pom pons, jumps and kicklines. The SLE Traditional Pom Pon Club is a team just like any other sport. Hard work, dedication, and team effort is expected. In trying out, you are making a voluntary choice of self-discipline and time management. This simply means that you have to give up certain things for pom, for example, extra time. Failure to comply with the coach s and team rules will lead to removal from the club.

The purpose of the South Lyon East Traditional Pom Club is to promote school spirit. entertain spectators, HAVE FUN as part of a club with peers and represent the school in traditional pom pon competitions. Representing your school is a privilege and an honor with related responsibilities. A good reputation is not established overnight, it is the result of hard work by many people over many years. The South Lyon East Traditional Pom Pon club will be from May 1st- June 2017 then resume 2nd week of Aug 2017 Feb 2017. In trying out for the team, you will be on the team for the whole season and participation is expected from May-Feb. RULES & REGULATIONS 1. PERFORMANCES - Members of the team are expected to attend and participate in ALL practices and functions, such as, but not limited to: Selected home football (we will preform prior to the pre game rituals), basketball, and soccer games. Competitions Fundraisers, such as car washes/bottle drives.golf outing, Winter pom clinic for K-8th graders School Assemblies Summer Camp- Mid American Pom Pon Overnight Camp Davenport University.Atomic Pom Pon Day Camp - TBD, Possible Michigan State Day Camp. Kick Off parties/holiday Parties Banquet All members must be dressed in full uniform for all events. Members may be asked to wear certain clothing on certain days to support school spirt. All performances, parades and games are MANDATORY. If for some reason you can not attend a performance you must contact the coach ASAP. Only extenuating circumstances will NOT result in removal from the team. ( family illness, hospitalization, funeral). If you are not performing and practicing up to par with the team you will be put on performance probation. You will be notified in writing by the coach that you are on performance probation. The letter will include areas and items that you must improve on. Coach may pull pommer from a routine at any time. Certain routines may require a us to hold inter team tryouts. The girls who do not make it for that routine will be alternates. They will still be expected to be at every practice, practice full out, dress at every performance and follow the team rules. Formations will be made by the coach. We will not take requests for certain spots in formations,( front, center or by your friends). Being in a certain grade does NOT give you any rights to a front row spot or request in formation. We will not discuss formations with parents. 2. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY: Good school attendance is important. If you have excessive tardies or absences in a class, the school will contact me and disciplinary actions will take place. You are an example to other students, so you have to take your classes seriously in order to remain on the team. In order to participate in any Athletic Department PRACTICE OR CONTEST, the athlete must be in attendance the entire school day of the practice or contest. In order to participate in an Athletic Department practice or contest that takes place on a day when school is not in session, the athlete must be in attendance the entire day preceding the day school is not in session. Exceptions would be such things as pre-arranged medical or dental appointments,

scheduled court appearances, death in the family or funeral attendance. These must be cleared with the Athletic Director in advance. Any athlete, who is suspended (either out of school or in-school suspension) for violation of the policies and regulations of the student handbook, WILL BE PROHIBITED FROM PARTICIPATION IN CONTESTS OR PRACTICES on the day that the suspension is served. *Failure to attend a practice or competition without a valid excuse (as outlined above) may result in loss of participation for up to one calendar week from the date of the unexcused absence. *A 2nd unexcused absence will result in removal from the squad. 3. TEAM ATTENDANCE POLICY: Practice will begin in May 8th. We will practice M, W and TH 6-8:00pm This will allow our incoming 8th graders time to get to school. We understand you may have dance or something already booked on these days. Please let us know prior to tryouts. We are hoping to go to Summer Camp June 28th -July 1st. CAMP IS MANDATORY. Please plan your family vacation accordingly. Summer practices will only be excused if Coach is informed prior to tryout- please write on tryout sheet. We will then go on break and resume practice the week of Aug 21st. Practices during the school year (Sept- Nov ) will take place M, W, TH after school 2:30-4:45pm. (Dec- Feb) practice will be M,T,W,Th 2:30-4:45. Friday practice will be added as needed. Bonding actives will be planned, team dinners, team sleepovers, team bonfire s, etc. These are mandatory requirements to promote team bonding. You must be at every practice and if unable to be at practice excuses go to the coach only You must call the coach and explain why you are not going to be at practice. If no phone call is received, you will be benched for the next performance. This is common courtesy to the coach and the rest of the team. The call is expected to come from the team member and not their parent. Unless of course it is extreme circumstance. Sick days must be called in BEFORE the practice you are missing. Sick days must also be accompanied by a doctor s note after 2 days. The doctor s note must say when you are able to begin practice again. You will not be allowed to return to practice without a note from your doctor that says you are well again. Sick days that are not called to the coach first will be considered unexcused absences. One unexcused absence from GAME PERFORMANCE shall be cause for dismissal. Unexcused tardiness to either a practice or game will be handled as follows: 1 st Time warning and 50 high kicks. 2 nd Time warning and 100 high kicks. 3 rd one game suspension. 4 th Time possible dismissal. Three tardies = One unexcused absence. If you were at school and not feeling well you must attend practice. If you are not contagious you must attend practice. Headaches, Menstrual Cramps and bad days are not excuses for missing practice. If you miss practice for any reason it is the pommers responsibility to learn the missed material for the day. If you miss practice more then then 1 days during a performance week you will not be able to preform. If you miss practice 10 days prior to a competition (Nov-Feb) you will be pulled from the competition at the coaches discretion.

4. DO NOT BE LATE FOR PRACTICE You should be there and ready to go at the designated time. Please see the attendance policy for more details. Practice times for the summer and upcoming school year will be determined by the coaches soon. Extra or longer practices will be scheduled if needed, especially during competition preparation. Holiday Break and Saturday Practices prior to competition will be MANDATORY. Saturday practices normally begin the last week in December - February. Please consider the time commitment prior to trying out. You must be ready to go at the start of practice. If you need to get water or use the restroom please arrive a few minutes early, we will begin on TIME Appointments are not reasons to miss practice. Please understand coordinating 20+ girls is very difficulty. We ask for you help in this area. We will not be practicing on Tue or Friday from May-Oct. Please use these days of the week for appointments. 5. CONDITIONING- At times the girls will be expected to condition at home. Conditioning sheets will be send home. The girls must return them at the beginning of practice. Failure to turn in sheets will result in. 1 st Time warning and 50 high kicks. 2 nd Time warning and 100 high kicks. 3 rd one game suspension. 4 th Time possible dismissal. 6. PRACTICE- Proper attire for practice is a T-shirt, shorts or sweats and shoes with good support and pom pons. It is important to have proper footwear. If you are barefoot or have slippery shoes, it will be difficult to practice in and there is a good chance you will get hurt. Hair must be pulled back at all times. There will be NO FOOD OR GYM at practice. NO CELL Phones will be allowed at practice. Phones may be kept turned off in girls duffle bags. Phones must be turned of so that practice is not interrupted by notifications and phone calls. Students my not check their phones at water breaks they must remain off the whole practice. If you need to get ahold of your daughter please contact a coach. Only water and sports drinks will be allowed at practice. NO coffee or pop. Failure to follow these rules will result in removal from the team, No jewelry will be allowed during any performances. If you show up for practice unprepared you will be sent home. This will count as an unexcused absence. Pommers are expected to give there all at practice. Marking or standing during a routine is not allowed. You must preform full out when requested to by the coach and be quite during teaching. Failure to follow these rules will result in removal from the team. Being Late to practice will result in 50 kicks. If you are staying over for classwork you must bring a note from your teacher to practice 7. APPEARANCE: All team members are to maintain a clean-cut appearance whenever in South Lyon East Pom Pon Club attire. No facial piercing visible when in uniform will be allowed. Makeup will be clean and not excessive. On certain days the Coach may coordinate what the team wears to school to promote team bonding and school spirit. It is mandatory to participate. All uniform decisions, pom colors, hair, make up and spirit wear attire will be at Coaches choice and approved by the coach. 8. NO smoking or drug use, including alcohol, will be allowed. Michigan law prohibits student s use of or in possession of these substances: Tobacco: Michigan compiled laws 722.640 Alcohol: Michigan compiled laws 436.338 Drugs: Michigan compiled laws 333.7404 If you are caught under the influence of any of the above or have them in your possession, you will be dealt with in accordance with school policy and your parents and administration will be informed. Any photos, including pictures posted on the internet, of

pom pon club members involved using and/or involved in inappropriate behavior will result in dismissal from the club. 9. THIS IS A CLUB NOT A SCHOOL SPORT We pay for the activities that we do as well as the items needed to fulfill these activities. There will be a camp deposit of $150 due April 19th at tryouts. Please send in a check in a sealed self addressed envelope. If your pommer does not make the team, the check will be mailed back to you with in 5 business days. An additional camp/uniform payment of $350.00 will be due at the parent meeting April 24th 7:30pm. Location Athletic Class Room. We PLAN to attend a over night camp at Davenport University from June 28-July1st this payment includes payment for CAMP. Another payment for approximately $150 will June 26th prior to leaving for camp. The balance will be invoiced through out the year. This is due to the fact that we will wait to see what the balance is after fundraisers. Individuals from the pom pon club will absorb all cost if necessary. Incoming freshman and new upper class men will also need to buy a duffle bag, warm up suit, jazz pant and shoes ( cougars and team tennis shoe) approx. cost is $260.00 these items are kept by the girls after season is over. NEW this year Duffle bags will be required this year for camp as well as performance tanks 10. FUND RAISERS: All team members are required to attend and participate in fundraising activities. These fund raisers are developed to help the entire team raise money to defer costs that come up throughout the year. Only coaches can excuse you from a fundraiser. Fundraisers will be run by our Booster Club. Parents will be expected to participate in and support the Booster Club. Girls will need to be present at ALL fundraisers. Parents are expected to Volunteer 3 times per season. Boosters will cover volunteer options. ( car wash, bottle drive, snack bar H.S. School games, pom clinic). Current Fundraisers- Bottle Drive MAY 31st. Wed Golf Outing SEPT 17th 1pm. each girl is expected to get min of 1-foursome and 2 hole sponsors. This our BIG fundraiser. They girls are expected to attend a slotted time to help. Blanket Making- AUG 20th expected Other fundraisers may be added as needed. If you are going to be out of town for any of the Fundraisers please list this on your tryout sheet. This will not effect your tryout but it will let us know if we need to reschedule a date. :) 11. CONDUCT: As a member of the South Lyon East Traditional Pom Pon Club, your actions not only reflect you, but also the other members of the team. Exemplary behavior is mandatory whenever in the community and at all functions where you are recognized as a representative of the team. Disrespect, foul language and uncooperative behavior and bad attitudes will not be tolerated. You will be removed from the team. We expect respect for teammates, coaches, spectators and parents at all times. 12. TRYOUTS- You must attend the clinic to tryout for the team. Please make sure we have a correct email for you and your pommer. MUSIC, TRYOUT, WRITE UP AND VIEDO to help practice will be emailed to you. CLINIC FORMS- 1. Physical on file with school or copy. 2. Permission Slip Above. 3 Tryout agreement below. Pommers will be judged in the following areas.

Interscholastic athletics exist for skilled and advanced athletes. If cutting of athletes becomes necessary, the coach will explain to the athletes the criteria for gaining membership to the team before tryouts begin. Those students not making the team will be entitled to have a personal interview with the coach. Please wait 48 hours to contact coach after results are posted. This give us time to regroup and prepare for your interview. Try out results will be emailed/ posted by end of day Friday April 21st. Only numbers will be emailed. Please know your students tryout number. Checks will be returned if your pommer does not make the team. 13. Academic Policy /High School Eligibility Minimum academic eligibility requirements for all extra-curricular activities at the high school. Eligibility is established at each semester with a minimum 1.7 semester GPA and no semester E s. If eligibility is not established at the semester, the student will not be allowed to participate for a minimum of 6 weeks. After 6 weeks the student must reestablish eligibility with a 1.7 term GPA and no E s the following marking period or they will remain ineligible. Mr. Butel the South Lyon East Athletic Director will check eligibility. If you are in eligible you will be notified.

14. Hazing and Bullying South Lyon East Athletics and School District has zero tolerance for these activities. 15. Communication We believe communication is key to any successful club. Communication between the coach and members, communication between the club and parents and communication between members and parents. We have an open door policy. Please feel free to contact a coach Monday- Friday 9-6pm to discuss any issues. Weekends you may leave us a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. The club will use and online calendar to keep everyone up to date. This information will be emailed to you and discussed at our first meeting. Email is very important, please check your email daily prior to practice for any last min changes. While we distribute our personal numbers, please use discretion when texting. Please only text information regarding times, date, uniforms. Never text with important information about your child, never text negative or disrespectful comments. Please give us a phone call. If the Coach feels you or your parents are disrespecting these guidelines you will be removed from the team. 6. Forms Physical dated after April 15, 2017 due prior to leaving for camp June 28th. More forms will be supplied at the parent meeting APRIL 24TH 7:30 PM ATHLETIC CLASS ROOM. Emergency cards, concussion form, uniform policy etc.
