After an amazing association with Midland Masters AC, of twenty-one years, Irene Nicholls has handed over the position of Chair to Graham Lamb. Irene will be a hard act to follow but Graham will have the support of all members of the committee and we wish him well in his new role. The report on the Annual General Meeting appears in this issue and from that it is clear that Graham and Jill Lamb are a great asset to the club and have agreed to take on several committee tasks. An account of their Madrid Adventure from Graham highlights the performances of 45 MMAC members in the International Indoor T & F Championships. The MMAC T & F Championships at Nuneaton proved to be an enjoyable and successful event and the inclusion of the Welsh championships was an added bonus. It is hoped that this might be repeated next year. News from one of our oldest members (in his nineties!). Karl Abolins has sustained a fractured shoulder and is presently unable to support our events. Our good wishes go to him for a speedy recovery. MIDLAND MASTERS AC COMPETITION VESTS AVAILABLE FROM SUTTON RUNNER The MMAC vest has been updated to include the club badge. It is white with red vertical band bearing The club name and badge. REPORT ON ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 46 th AGM took place on 15 April 2018, at Tudor Grange Leisure Centre, Solihull. The retiring Chairman reported: It was in 1997 when I took over from John Topliss- I had been Vice-Chair for a few years and it was intended that this should be short term, as I had just retired and looked forward to moving on to pastures new and perhaps travelling with Edgar as he continued his athletic participation. How endearingly naive Twenty years later my life still revolves around administration and organisation, although I am finding it increasingly physically difficult. It is therefore with regret that I feel it is time to hand over to those who can take the Club on with the vigour required to deal with the increasing legislative changes that are being imposed from all directions. During my time in office I have been privileged to work with many who have become friends, we have travelled the World and been involved with decision making at all athletic levels. Working with our industrious committee has been particularly rewarding over the years. Their support has been invaluable. There are increasing demands upon the calendar which mean that our traditional events are fighting for space, for officials and helpers and for organisers. Numbers of participants have fallen as, again, they have to make developmental and financial decisions. Thanks to Graham and Jill Lamb we have continued with the Road fixtures, although new venues are being sought for 2018. The Cross Country went once again to Wolverhampton for another successful Championship. What great support we have from them. The Colin Simpson Memorial Handicap was supplemented by open competitors as it is not very well supported from our members. Eric Horwill and Adrian Lloyd worked hard but the future of the event is in jeopardy. On a more positive note the Track & Field Championships, although successfully staged in 2917, are being organised for 2018 by a small committee headed by Andrew Lewis and Arthur Daley aided by Elaine Mee and Mel Hepke. Hopefully this will signal a move towards Championships being organised as one off events, thus spreading the lead and involving more members and clubs across the region. The support of our athletes has been tremendous. The inter-area T&F challenges have been met head on. The outdoor at Solihull resulted in MMAC taking all three awards, Ladies, Men and Overall, and despite the atrocious weather experienced at the Beginning of March, we fielded a very strong indoor team at Lee Valley winning the overall trophy and sharing the Ladies award with EMAC. What a coup. Congratulations must go to Elaine Mee for her work in gathering the strong teams and acing as team manager on the day ably supported by Vice Chair Rita Brownlie. Mick Smedley is MMAC England Team Selector for the International CC. His support and promotion of our athletes has resulted over time in many members being chosen to run for their country in this exciting challenge event which rotates around the home countries and Eire. If you haven t yet started to log your current performances please give a thought to submitting them in support of an application for selection. Congratulations to Angela Copson who once again won her age group race making this her 10 th consecutive win. The spring edition of Masters Athletics (available on line) gives a very full list of all of Angela s achievements with a photograph of her receiving her latest award at the European Indoor Championships in Madrid many congratulations Angela. Congratulations ar e also in order to Tony Porter and the Team on winning the MV League. This AGM highlights the work done by your Committee during the year. Without their dedication the Club will not survive in its present form. There are some important vacancies, principally Discipline Secretaries and Officials Secretary. A new Chair will need to be appointed. My experience has been varied in my time with the Club and I have filled a range of jobs, all of which have been satisfying and enjoyable. Please if you feel able to offer some support and help you will be welcomed with open arms On signing off, I pay tribute to the stalwart workers who keep the wheels turning. To Martin for his oversight of our finances that are in such good order, to Rita for her expertise and wise counsel, to Margaret and Lou for keeping us informed through their work with the Newsletter, to Kate for taking the Minutes of our meetings and tour Presidents Lynn and Julie Bellfield for their gracious presence and support at our events and to all officials and organisers who have made it possible to hold our various events this year. Without you all it would not be possible too provide the varied programme of activities which are so much enjoyed and supported by the members of this wonderful Club. Irene Nicholls 3

The Treasurer gave his report, indicating that the finances were in a healthy position and that the subscriptions would remain unchanged for the coming year. He gave the balances: 26,578 Assets: 3274. Graham Lamb reported current membership as 557 with 66 1 st claim members, compared with 568 this time last year. He has contacted 140 members and hopes that some of them will rejoin. Payment of subscriptions on line is going well. Election of Committee Graham Lamb had agreed to succeed Irene Nicholls as Chairman. This was proposed and seconded and agreed unanimously. The following committee members were then elected en bloc: President: Lou Satterthwaite President elect Irene Nicholls Vice Chairman Rita Brownlie General Secretary Jill Lamb Treasurer: Martin Wilkinson Membership Graham Lamb Minutes Secretary Kate Satterthwaite Road Secretary Jill Lamb CC Jill Lamb T&F vacant Walking Lynn & Julie Bellfield Handicapper Geo. BMAF championship events will also be considered but these are not selection races as such. The EAMA Inter Area Club CC at Bury St Edmunds on 29 September 2018 will give a more up to date guide on form on the country. They will help in terms of identifying performances by athletes in the same age groups going head to head. Power of 10 statistics are useful but do not compare runner against runner, course against course and conditions against conditions. Your England vest may be supplied. You will, however, need to supply other items of running kit (including red shorts if possible.) Athletes will be notified about the outcome of their application within a few days of the selection meeting in October. It is important that all athletes wishing to be selected are paid up members of their respective Masters/Veteran area club or association and also be UK registered. A MADRID ADVENTURE an account by Graham & Jill Lamb In March we set off for our first international indoor championships in Madrid, looking forward to some warmer weather. I had worked for some weeks around Madrid but had not had the chance to explore the city, so this was another plus for the trip. In preparation we had taken part in our first ever indoor event the BMAF championships at Lee Valley the week before. I had run the 1500 and Jill had the delight of outdoor throwing of the Hammer and Weight. We arrived in Madrid on the Saturday evening and found our hotel very near the underground to the various sites. Sunday we went to register and met David and Linda Oxland. a quick registration, a look round the venue and off to look at the throws stadium which was 45 minutes away. Monday was the first day of competition but we went to the training track for some practise. We arrived in pouring rain and found the training track had no cage for long throws. The track had an enclosed football pitch in the middle so really wasn t good for anyone but runners or long jumpers, so back to the hotel and later for a run in the main park. Tuesday saw Jill in action in the W60 hammer. It was cold as we got to the stadium and the earlier group had started their warm up In slight snow. Jill s first throw saw her in 5th dropping to 9th in the 3rd round. She needed a pb to stay in the competition so missed out on the final rounds. Wednesday was my first day of competition. In the M60 800m race with long season ahead I wasn t going to risk spikes. A few laps of the spectator area and a few strides on the training straight I was off, In 7th place I tracked a French athlete but couldn t pass him. My time of 2.41.99 was frustratingly 0.33 sec. off my club record, I set in Perth. With the event over I could watch other Midland Athletes in action. Thursday we took a break and did the Madrid Bus tour and visited some sights Friday was 1500 m day with many MMAC members in action. Angela Copson went into an early lead and just kept moving away on her way to a 3rd gold. The only surprise was it wasn t another new world record but with the 800m the day beforeand the cross country the next day it was a sensible race. For Jill s second event, the weight, at the throws venue it was windy and bins were falling over and distance markers had been thrown around the field. The tent for the throwers then blew over and hit a French athlete on the head luckily not causing serious injury. Jill was 10th but threw a new pb. We had a lazy Sunday in Madrid and the sun came out! What struck us about Madrid was how reasonable were the costs of eating out, not what you would expect in a capital city. MMA 257 JUNE 2018 On the 10 th of June entries close for the Horwich 5 K on the 17 th June and the North Downs Run at 30K on the 24 th June. As this moment in time we have 171 entries for the 5K promoted on closed roads in the Town Centre of Horwich. This is a competitive race for BMAF members only and perhaps proves closed championships on the road attracts our members. We have extended the original closing date by one week and it would be excellent news to hit 200 runners so please enter now before you miss the closing date. The NDR 30K must be one of the safest trail races in Great Britain. It is so well organised I cannot fault it. Yes it is tough but it is tough for everybody. Don t miss out on the poppy fields, the refreshments at the finish and the possibility of winning a BMAF medal. You only have a few days left to enter. Walter Hill.
