CELEBRATING 26 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Kansas City Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - July 2018 President s News The summer is flying by and we have had some great outings! If only it weren't as hot as the inside of a furnace. We still have lots of golf to go including several out of town trips. Make room on your calendar as these are always a good time. Our meeting on Thursday, July 19th is the last day to sign up for "Big Break Leawood. This event is hosted by Bob McDonald and Mara Kelley at the Country Club of Leawood, which is a private course. To get signed up for the Qualifier event, bring your entry fee of $25.00 with you on Thursday night, or if you can t attend the meeting, you can send an e-mail to marakelley09@gmail.com to get her mailing address. The Qualifier event will be Wednesday, August 1st and the very lucky 14 qualifiers will play with Bob and Mara in the exclusive main event on Sat- urday, August 11th. All proceeds are donated to the KCSGA general fund to help raise funds for the Annual Awards Banquet in November. There have been some questions about what golf events are eligible for a "hole-inone" payout. Your Board has set the following policies: All events on a KCSGA golf schedule (except for Big Break Leawood) are eligible for a hole-in-one payout, whether it be a 9-hole event or an 18- hole event, on a Par 3 course, an executive course, or a regulation course. (To be eligible, the event must be open to the entire membership.) Also, to be eligible for a hole-in-one payout, one must hit off the correct tee box. Women and players who are 90 years and older, can hit off the forward tees. Men under the age of 90 must hit off the tee box they normally play (must be at least one tee box behind the forward tees). So what is a hole-in-one? A hole-inone occurs when the golfer gets his golf ball into the cup on the green with just one stroke. USGA recommends: It should be made during a round of at least nine holes, attested to by an acceptable person, may be made during regular, match play, or a scramble. It may be off of permanent or temporary tee boxes or greens as marked by the course. Golf Weekly recommends: It may not be picked up and moved by an outside agency (e.g., human, bird or animal) and dropped in the hole; and it may not be knocked into the hole by another ball in play. If blown into by weather, it is valid! Hope this helps. Now get out there and get one! "Bad attitude is worse than a bad swing" - Payne Stewart ~Donna Deleon, President Upcoming Multi-Chapter Events (see SinglesGolf.com/events) River Cruise - Paris, France, September 11-18, 2018 - This cruise is SOLD OUT, however, you can get on the wait list. This will be a river cruise up the Seine River. We'd like to spend 10-12 days in France. Of course, if you have the time, you can spend some extra days in Paris with friends. Secure a cabin-mate and save $$. Details at SinglesGolf.com/RiverCruise - the site has a cost chart and list of who's coming. Congratulations to Pam Wells for winning greens fees and cart for four to St. Andrews. I'm sure that she and three of her closest friends will enjoy the outing. June's raffle raised $90.00 for our general fund. Ok students, it's time for a math lesson! The $90.00 raised was a result of selling $5.00 worth of tickets to 18 people. That works out that ticket buyers at June's meeting had a 1 in 18 chance of their $5.00 ticket purchase winning the prize valued at $180.00. I think those are pretty good odds!! Ok, now comes the disclaimer: Past results and odds are no guarantee of future results and odds. It would be awesome if we could sell more tickets resulting in more dollars for our general fund and still provide a great opportunity for one of our members to walk away with a great prize! July's raffle will be golf certificates for green fees and cart for four at Prairie Highlands. And, for all you "Great Life" members, you can always use the gift certificates for bringing friends! See you at Birdies! ~Rick Buie, Vice President Treasurer s Report Treasurer s Report ending June 30th General Fund: $2,233.46 Hole-in-One Fund: $1,434.00 ~ Patty Ford, Treasurer Golf News We've had four more great golf outings since the last newsletter. We had 38 golfers travel to Lawrence on Saturday morning, June 23rd to Eagle Bend Golf Course and had a fun day on the course. Big winners were Longest Drive Jane & Grant, Closest to the Pin Rick M & Patricia. The best part was the party after golf at Susie's House. I'd like to tell you more, but what happens at Susie's stays at Susie's, just kidding! They had a fabulous spread and I expect nothing less from Susie and Gerri. Thank you Susie & Gerri! On Wednesday afternoon, 4th of July we participated in the Falcon Lakes Golf Club 16 th Annual 4 th of July Scramble. We had a nice turnout with ten teams playing. Tom P., Barb G., Patty & Rick C. came in 1st Place and Ben, Julie, Shannon & Mike came in 3rd Place in the Second Flight! Way to represent KCSGA. Thank you Dohn & Joyce for organizing this event. Sunday afternoon, July 8th we played Creekmoor Golf Course. If you like the beach, this is the course for you. Maybe, that was just my game, but what a beautiful course. Winners were Longest Putt Bob M. & Sandy, Closest to the Pin Mike, Shannon, Debbie O. & Ron O (Charlene s Son). Creekmoor did an excellent job having dinner ready for us after a hard day on the course. Thank you Bob H. & Debbie O. for hosting this event. Saturday morning, July 14 th we played Shoal Creek Golf Course. We were pleasantly surprised with cooler weather than what was originally forecasted. The forecasted weather did cause us to have a lighter turnout than we re used to at this course, but we did have 34 show up and ready to play. The winners were Closest to the Pin Char, Curtis, Bob M. & Tom P. Longest Putt George & Rick C. It was a great golf outing and we met after golf to dine at the Brass Rail. I d like to thank Paula, Jan and Rick C. for hosting! Look for e-mails and Sign-Up sheets at the monthly meeting for these upcoming golf events: Falcon Valley Golf Course Nine & Dine, Friday, July 27 th, hosted by Vince and Anna Qualifier for Big Break Leawood 2018, Wednesday, August 1st, hosted by Mara and Bob Manhattan Road Trip, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 3 rd -5 th, hosted by Bob H and Tom P Exclusive Main Event for Big Break Leawood 2018, Saturday, August 11th, hosted by Mara and Bob Columbia Road Trip Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 24 th -26 th, hosted by Bev ~Julie Robertson., Golf Chairperson Social News Report We had a great time at Chicken N Pickle on First Friday, July 6th! We had around 35 of our favorite friends join us even though it was a little warm. For those of you who played pickle ball, good job!

Pickle ball is a great way to get a little extra exercise! After pickle ball, several members strolled across the parking lot to Restless Spirits distillery and Cinder Block Brewery to wrap up the evening. August First Friday will be held on the SECOND FRIDAY, AUGUST 10th, due to the Manhattan Trip scheduled on August 3rd-5 th. We will meet at Big Whiskey's American Restaurant & Bar located at 9100 W. 135th St., Overland Park, KS (formerly occupied by Blue Moose Bar & Grill). ~Cheryl Settle & Joyce Smith, Social Co-Chairs Giving Back to our Community We had 25 volunteers from KCSGA show support to Harvesters on Saturday morning, June 30th. We split up into two teams to sort food and drink items. We demonstrated teamwork and had a lot of fun sorting and repackaging items to be donated to people in need. After all of our hard work, we drove over to The West Bottoms and ate lunch at Rockstar Burgers and then a few of us ventured across the street to Stockyards Brewing Co. We, as a group, are truly blessed to be able to give back to our community. Some of the volunteers expressed an interest in volunteering on a more regular basis. So if you didn t make it this time.maybe next time. Thank you all for helping. ~Bob Haefele, Harvesters Host Membership News Hello Hot, Sultry July. Have a great golf season! ~Kenna Heim and Miles Hartley Communication News Golf Hosts, Social Chairs (and anyone else).please remember to take and send pictures of KCSGA golf and social events to blhembree@yahoo.com for publication in the newsletter and for the slideshow at the Annual Banquet. Thanks! A BIG THANK YOU to Tracy Searles for opening her home to the group for a 4 th of July picnic on Saturday, July 7 th. We had a great time competing against each other playing yard games, visiting with new and old friends, and eating some great food. We had a chance to bid farewell to long-time member and friend, Bob Fischer. Bob is moving to South Carolina to live near family. We will definitely miss him and all his service and support he gave to this organization. Fare thee well, my friend. Who Reads the Newsletter Trivia Contest? I guess no one in June read the newsletter as I did not have even one entry for the June Trivia Contest, too bad... you might have won the golf certificates to St. Andrews and had your picture in this newsletter. I ll make it easier this time. Let s find out who reads the July newsletter. Who made the first known hole-in-one in golf history and what is the name of the course? Tell me the two correct answers at the July monthly meeting to get your name entered into a drawing to win six free raffle tickets ($5.00 value). In case you don t know who I am, see picture below. ;-) Good luck! ~Bev Hembree, Communications Chairperson Spotlights on New Members Meet Georgia Minor Georgia says she first played golf about 35 years ago and played for many years (although not very well)! She hasn't played for about 15 years now, so she feels like a newbie - but with some golf lessons, she hopes to at least look respectable by the end of summer. She doesn t have a favorite course - but she does enjoy the Overland Park Par 3 course. She doesn t have a favorite golf story that comes to mind, but hopefully, that will soon change as she plays more golf with KCSGA. She is still dreaming about the glorious feeling that a hole-inone might soon give her. Our current member, Susie South, told Georgia about the group and what fun she was having, enjoying the people, and the sport! Georgia grew up in Central Illinois, and has moved around a bit, including five years living and working in Shanghai, China. This is her third return to the Kansas City area. She will be living in Lenexa and would like to say that hopefully the third time is a charm and she will stay. Georgia has been in the education field for 34 years. She tried to retire this year (even had a big party and received a plaque from her last district). However, she found a school that was pulling at her heart strings so she is going to stay in it at least one more year. Georgia likes being active so she has many interests including cooking, theater, wine tasting, golf, volunteer work, and will also be trying her hand at pickle ball. Meet Aimee Brown Aimee learned to play golf during college, but has never played on a regular basis. She says joining KCSGA has given her the opportunity to play on a more regular basis. Since she is new to the area, she has only played a couple of courses so far. Her favorite golf story is when she and her Dad were playing (at the club where he was a member) and they got about five holes in when her Dad realized it was

men s only day. So, rather than call it a day, they would hit the ball and then run into the bushes to get to the next part of the course. She says, It was the fastest game I ever played and I really didn t play that badly! When I asked Aimee if she ever had a hole-in-one, she responded without hesitation, Not yet! She learned about our group through the MeetUp website. Aimee grew up primarily in Northern California around the Sacramento area, but also spent about 22 years in Chicago. She moved here from Dallas and currently lives in the Brookside area. Her fourlegged furry baby is a dog named Maggie who is getting up in years. She does marketing for colleges, and took a job here in Kansas City to do marketing for Grantham University based in Lenexa. Her hobbies are cooking, snow skiing, and she loves trying new restaurants and craft cocktails.
