2016 BC CHAMPIONSHIPS ABBOTSFORD BC SEPTEMBER 3-4, 2016 A total of 70 players entered this years BC Champs. The attendance was down a little this year for a number of reasons, the main one being the fact the Canadian Championships where held just a few weeks prior to the champs. Regretfully in these tough times financially a lot of the players could only attend one event and not both. Those that did attend had a great time and the Abbotsford Horseshoe Club did a fantastic job. The club held a catered dinner at the club on Saturday night with a total of 80 of us attending, the food was good and of course lots of it, they had roast beef and chicken as the main course with all the fixings, salads, veggies, potato s, coffee, tea and desert. No one left hungry. Musical entertainment was also provided. The weather co-operated, no rain delays, some minor showers. For the first time in many years we had no play-offs to determine the winner of any class. 2016 PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONS JUNIOR BOYS Dalton Moffat- Victoria This is Dalton s 3 rd straight title PEE WEE BOYS Anthony Rondow Victoria this is Anthony s 3 rd straight title MEN S - Tom Moffat Victoria Tom s 4 th straight title, 5 th overall (Previous victory 2010) LADIES A Lindsay Hodgins Victoria Lindsay s 2 nd straight victory We believe she is the youngest lady to win the title

He married Eileen and they have two children Lori and Gordi and grandchildren. His first introduction to horseshoes was as an elementary school student at a longshoremen s picnic in Nanaimo. He watched his dad and Bob Timothy play in a tournament. Later he saw an article by Bob in a local newspaper and called him. He played in the year ending tournament and had a 20% average. He vowed to return next year as an A player and he did. He built a pit in his back yard and practiced an hour a day all winter.

Next spring he qualified at 60% to get in the A class. He joined the Ladysmith Horseshoe Club and played for the next ten years in many tournaments. The highlight was coming second to Elmer Hohl in Burnaby in the Canadian Championship. He played in eight Canadian Championships. From 1983 to 1996 he dropped out of horseshoes to coach and officiate at his children s ball games. He returned to playing horseshoes in 1997 and joined the Victoria Club. Lindsay Hodgins, World Junior Champion is his protégé. He has spent a lot of time coaching her. Jerry Melissa is always a gentleman on and off the courts From Jerry Melissa On Saturday, September 3, 2016, for the first time in my life, I was rendered speechless. When my name was called as the latest inductee to the B.C.H.P.A. Hall of Fame I needed to have Eileen both bring me to attention and direct me to where President, Tom Moffat was waiting for me. In years past I was in awe listening to the accomplishments of other inductees and their successful horseshoe years. And yes, there was always the secret desire that 'one day' maybe! But to actually have it happen is beyond belief. My first reaction was 'who could have possibly nominated me'. And then the realization that 'someone actually voted for me' set in! The game of Horseshoes has been very kind to me! I have been able to see North America playing the game. Combining family vacations and weekend excursions has been made so easy by tournament schedules organized by the many Associations. And the fact that my picture will be displayed with my mentors Bob Timothy and Murray Rayner in the Burnaby 'wall of fame' is a bonus that those who knew those men will understand deeply. Jim Ball, Matt Zablotney, Clayton English and Walter Kinakin were four players that drove me to distraction. They certainly got the best of me on many occasions. And now I join them, happily knowing that they were hugely responsible for getting me placed on the same wall that they all occupy! To the executive, the hall of fame committee and all horseshoe players in the province of B.C. I humbly thank you for allowing me to be a participating member in the best sporting organization in all of Canada and the United States.
