Page 2 International Student Services Newsletter Halloween Volume 2: Issue 1 Brief History of Halloween Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. The word Halloween is short for All Hallow s Evening. Halloween originated in the ancient Celtic festival Samhain. The ancient Gael culture celebrated Samhain at the end of the harvest season, and stock supplies to prepare for winter. The Gaels believed that the boundaries of the world of the living and the world of the dead overlapped on October 31st. That event would cause the dead to come back to life and spread sickness and damage crops. Costumes were worn on the 31st of October as disguise so the evil spirits will not notice who the people of the living were. Modern Day Halloween On Halloween night, kids go out in costumes walking door to door, knocking the door and saying trick-or-treat. Then the owner of the house passes out candy to the children. Around the time of Halloween at events, some events may hold costume contests. These contests determine whose costume is the most scariest or creative, and they award that person with a prize.
