JUNIOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENT T he Junior National Tournament for both Under 15 Under 20 was recently held in Bloemfontein. Once again it was extremely pleasing to see young people under the age of 20 take to the greens show great skill in playing the game of bowls. National Tournament played at Oudstudente Bowls Club, 13 districts took part with 113 players in total. This year saw the second of the Under 15 Junior Nationals which is attracting a large number of youngsters from all the districts but certainly a vast number of spectators (albeit parents)! In the Under 15 Junior Although good rain was predicted for the week ( did it rain ) it only resulted in one round of play being prevented from completion. The young competitors enjoyed a week of good bowls a wonderful display of sportsmanship. At the Orangia Bowling Club, host club to the Under 20 Junior National Tournament, 16 districts entered teams with 188 players in total. The young players renewed friendships new friendships were made between players from various districts. NSC: M&M News from around South Africa ISSUE 20 Good bowls proved to be the order of the week, with many a team looking to be the winner during the sectional play, just to be pipped at the post. The finals in the Junior National Under 15 s were contested between the team of Sedibeng a team they beat during the sectional play, Western Province B. The finals in the Junior National Under 20 s were between a local team, Southern Free State A the Border A team. See page two to continue reading article.. CONVENER S CORNER The U/15 U/20 Bowls SA National Tournaments have come gone. The week was blessed with relatively good weather, with only one round having been cancelled due to rain. What really impressed me was the high quality of bowls that was played as such I am convinced that we will in the near future see some of these players being selected for Bowls SA Squads. Congratulations to all the medallists on their outsting performances. I must also thank all the teams that entered these tournaments as without entrants the medallists would not have had the opportunity to achieve this honour. I must especially congratulate the U/15 Team from Sedibeng it was the first time that Sedibeng entered a team in this tournament they won the silver medal I really hope this inspires the other Districts that did not enter teams in the 2018 tournaments to try enter at least one team in either of the 2019 tournaments. ISSUE 20 2018 Keeping to the theme of Youth I would like to call on all Districts/Clubs to take up the call from the NSC M&M to present at least one event aimed at introducing the sport of bowls to the youth during Youth Month (June). It is a necessity that we introduce the youth to our sport if we are serious about keeping our sport alive well in the future. Good Bowling David Hamer 2

JUNIOR NATIONAL TOURNAMENT cont Continued from front page In the Under 15 Junior Tournament there were some close battles Western Province ended with both their teams winning medals. Sedibeng, a one team district entry were firm favourites going into the finals. Yet the inexperience nerves took it s toll against the previously beaten WP team that showed perseverance control under tremendous pressure. The results of the 2018 Bowls South Africa Under 15 Junior National Tournament were:- 1st Western Province B nd 2 Sedibeng Bowls 3rd Western Province A The 2018 U 15 Junior National Gold Medalists Western Province B the Silver Medalist Sedibeng A. Top: The 2018 U 20 Junior National Gold Medalists the Southern Free State A team Silver Medalists, Border A. Below: Well done to all the players but especially to the winners, runners up bronze medalists in both divisions. 4th KZN Country In the Under 20 Junior Tournament the teams of KZN Country, Eden, Bol Johannesburg Bowling Association showed determination great skills, many of the youngsters having played before. But it was the quiet teams of the smaller district entries that made their appearance during the finals having shown that teams that st together play together can indeed set a high stard. Although Border A had an intensive fight for first place against Southern Free State A, the latter team of youngsters came out winners on the day these results will hopefully see more of our young people from the Free State surrounds joining us on the greens. The results for the Bowls South Africa Under 20 Junior National Tournament were:- ISSUE 20 2018 Bowls South Africa was represented at the Tournament by the Executive, Rob Forbes (President), Charles Levy (Vice President) Ian Stayt (Executive Member). It was really great having a number of Protea Bowlers visiting involved with the Juniors during the week, some of them Protea players attending the evening event. as Team Managers as the Greenkeeper. The NSC M&M once again wish to thank Susan Nel who willingly gave a short address at the "Fun Prize-giving" event. At this event teams received fun awards, some of these included the best dressed team, mascot of the year, best team spirit, the tallest shortest players with one player receiving the award for Courage Sportsmanship. Another first at a tournament was the BowlsGoLive project, This project focused on the live streaming as well as recorded streaming of games then being shared on social media. This was well received. A special word of thanks is extended to Bowls SA, the tournament committee, both club s all staff involved in once again a successful tournament. 1st Southern Free State A 2nd Border A 3rd Ekurhuleni A 4th Sables B 3

BOWLS GO LIVE LIVE STREAMING Bowls GoLive was an idea from Bowls South Africa to bring bowls to the public in an affordable way. The project as part of NSC Membership & Marketing was fully tested at the BSA Junior Nationals in Bloemfontein. The overall reception was good positive. Selected games the finals were streamed live on Facebook then saved on Facebook for offline viewing. Using live streaming gives us an opportunity to bring games to bowlers around the country live in an accessible way. So no subscription needed - just an internet connection to Facebook, all the action is available to you to view. Live streaming gives viewers the option to be part of the action. They can ask questions, ask for score updates from other games or just interact with the live action. We were even able to bring action to supporters in clubhouse with just the use of an internet connection, laptop HDMI cable. Live streaming could be the future of broadcasting if results from around the world are anything to go by. The best part is this technology is that it s accessible easy for anyone to use. Over the next few months we plan to show how districts, clubs tournaments can make use live streaming not only to show Jacques, M&M team, in action going live on the green! 4 bowls to other bowlers but also as a mar- To see some of the behind the scenes keting tool for sponsors, new members action fun games of the Junior Nationals see how this system can business leagues. be used to market tournaments visit To view the action of the BSA Junior Nahttps://www.facebook.com/groups/ tional Tournament visit BowlsGoLive youthbowlssa/ Facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/search/top/?
