VALLEY ROVERS AGM Valley Rovers GAA Club will hold its Annual General Meeting of the Club on Tuesday 28/11/2017 at 20.00 in Knockavilla Hall. JUVENILE MINOR It was very even at the start of the game, and it was 0-04 each after 15 minutes, then Misko Savic got the first of his two goals to make it 1-04 to 0-04. Kilshannig received a further blow when their half back received a red card. Valleys pressed on to make it 1-06 to 0-06 at half time. Valleys started the second half brightly scoring a further goal through Jack Crowley and two points to extend their lead 2-08 to 0-07 points on the 39 minute. Huge credit is due to Kilshannig as they came thundering back in to the game scoring 6 unanswered points to leave the score 2-08 to 0-13 on the 54th minute. But Valleys refused to lie down scoring the next 2 points through Peter Calnan and Cathal Manning and seemed to have made the result safe by scoring a third goal through Misko Savic, following good work by Sean Barry. This made it 3-10 to 0-14 on the 64th minute. Again Kilshannig came back scoring a further 1-01 to leave it 3-10 to 1-15 on full time on the 67th minute, a one point victory for Valley Rovers. This sparked great scenes where our players and supporters celebrated winning the James Hurley Memorial Cup for the first time. Valley Rovers 3-10 Kilshannig 1-15 On Sun 19th Nov Valley Rovers were crowned Minor Football Premier 2A County Champions after a memorable encounter with Kilshannig. Valleys were in what seemed to be comfortable winning positions on several occasions in this game only for Kilshannig to come fighting back to take this game right to the final whistle. Page 2 of 6

This is a special achievement by these players and we were delighted that Jim & Joan and Hurley family were able to be with us in Carrigaline on Sunday. This squad of 28 players deserve special credit, very few people would have predicted a county victory at the outset of this year, but the boys kept training and working hard. Our Goalkeeper Cathal O Sullivan and our six backs provided a stable platform, only conceding two goals in four championships games, Conor Hurley and Niall Lawton more than held their own at midfield, and our forwards superbly lead by team captain Cathal Manning provided the scores we needed to be County Champions for 2017. Olan Fehily, Adam Healy, Jack Higgins Paddy O Sullivan, Jason Cronin, Cormac Lyons, Mark O Leary, Adam Walsh Murphy, Matt Devine, Daniel Kenneally. TO REMIND PEOPLE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS VICTORY WE HAVE REPEATED THE ARTICLES ON JAMES HURLEY PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED IN WEEK 3. JAMES HURLEY MEMORIAL CUP Photo: James Hurley receiving the South East Football U21 cup in 1993 from Denis O Riordan. A special mention also to team mentor Jerome Sharvin for his efforts with this team in 2017. This is Jeromes first year with Valley Rovers, both he and Carmel are very welcome to Innishannon. He is pictured here with fellow mentor Eddie Lynch, Captain Cathal Manning and Joan & Jim Hurley parents of the late James Hurley. Team: Cathal O Sullivan Matt Crowley, Dave Muckian, Sean Lynch Adam Kenneally, Shane Lynch, Darragh O Shea (0-03), Niall Lawton, Conor Hurley, Sean Barry, Jack Crowley(1-00), Peter Calnan (0-02), Cathal Manning(0-05), Misko Savic (2-00), Michael Connolly. Subs: Aaron O Leary, Cian Crowley, Ronan O Connell,(all used) Valley Rovers recently presented the James Hurley Memorial Cup to Rebel Og. This cup will be awarded annually to the winners of the Minor Premier 2A football championship (the 2016 winners, Buttevant, were the first recipients). Valley Rovers donated the cup in memory of James who died in 2002 at the age of 29. James was one of several Hurley brothers to play for Valley Rovers and was a very talented player in both football and hurling. He was much-loved by everyone, and a real gentleman. Valley Rovers team-mates still remember James s incredible energy levels. During fitness tests, it was normal that, long after even the fittest players had dropped out, they would all be standing there, out of breath, watching James still going. This energy was also evident on the pitch one former player recalls about James that, playing in the half-back line (and before the days of the attacking Page 3 of 6

wing-back), he would appear out of nowhere up at the 21-yard line, take a pass and pop the ball over the bar. James won numerous medals with the club, to many to list, however one that deserves mention is the fact that along with a select few, in one year he completed our own double/double (In the same year playing in the victorious South East minor hurling and football teams and the victorious South East U21 hurling and football teams. James also wore the famous Cork red jersey when playing with the Cork junior footballers. A testament to James s drive and desire is the fact many of his achievements came after he sustained what would have been a career ending injury for some when he broke his leg in the minor football county semi-final v s Tadhg MacCarthaigh in Ballinascarty. James taught in St Aloysius School in Cork, where he coached the camogie team and was very active generally with the under-age game. The annual James Hurley U14 Inter County Camogie Blitz has been running for many years to commemorate the great work done by James Hurley. This is a major event in the underage camogie calendar, with upwards of 600 girls taking part each year. James s memory will also live on now through the James Hurley Memorial Cup. The cup was presented by James s brother Richard to Michael O Mahony, Chairman Rebel Og Central. Valley Rovers U15 C3 team won the tournament final last Wednesday evening in Carrigaline, on a score of 1-11 to 1-10. Valleys started the game very well, with points from frees and play by Jason Cronin, putting us ahead by 5 points to 3. However, Carrigaline came back to lead 7 points to 6 at half time. Carrigaline started the second half very well, but a strong Johnathon Keneally held midfield well and a goal from Dara Devine put us ahead again. Points from Ben Humphries put us 4 points up again but Carrigaline fought back to level the game, a late point from Jacob O Driscoll sealed our victory. UNDER 15 Valley Rovers 1-11 Carrigaline 1-10 Team: Sean Egan, Adam Murphy, Daniel Hurley, Eoghan Lynch (captain), David Kelly, Dara Devine, Jack O Flynn, Ben Humphries, Jacob O Driscoll, Ciaran O Shea, Jason Cronin, Johnathon Murphy, Niall Og O Leary, Johnathon Kennelly, Eoghan Crowley.
