Providence Lacrosse Exploiting Transition Opportunities X s and O s of Playing Fast

Why Play Fast Players LOVE IT Easier to score goals Exploits Opponents Personnel EXTREMELY Difficult to score in 6 v 6 You can always slow it down

Offensive Tenets SIMPLICITY IS KEY! DODGE TO SCORE! ALWAYS BE A THREAT! IF MY MAN IS NOT COVERING ME I NEED TO GET THE BALL! PLAY THE PERCENTAGES

Rules of Engagement 1. Be Decisive Mistakes of Commission vs. Omission 2. Make the Easy Pass 3. Communicate 4. Fundamentals

Fundamentals Misconception about teams that play fast Fundamentals are VITAL To and Through the Pass Catching it Loaded Extending hands to sideline Finishing in Front Running through ground balls 1 st Midfielder without the ball crashing the crease

Odd vs Even Break Attack must identify each situation FIRST MIDFIELDER WITHOUT THE BALL MUST CRASH THE CREASE Rules for ODD break (4 v 3, 5 v 4, 6 v 5) If no one plays you SCORE! If someone plays you move the ball Its not rocket science Even Break (4 v 4, 5 v 5, 6 v 6) Run by your man and SCORE! If you draw a slide move the ball!

When to Move the Ball Common question is when do I know if I have made a defender commit to stopping the ball? Watch the defenders shoulders. When his chest becomes square to the ball carrier move the ball!

ODD Breaks 4 v 3 L Break Right handed players are breaking down right hand side of field Point, Up the Hash, and Post Up Early When Lefty Midfielders are coming down right side of field

4 v 3

4 v. 3 Spacing: Point: 17 yards up, 5 yards outside pipe Rt: 1 yard up, 3 yards outside right pipe Lt: 1 yard up, 5 yards outside left pipe Midfielder: Attack the pipe and force the defense to make a decision be a threat! React: If the defense holds or is slow to rotate, shoot! If the defense rotates: Point Come to pass, then curl to goal after receiving ball GENERAL (2 passes away) Communicate shot/one/through before point man receives ball Post Up Read defender and go snively or pop to an open passing lane If we don t score a goal, we still have the ball

5 v 4 Trailer

5 v 4 Trailer Attack Spacing: Point: 14 yards up, 10 yards outside pipe Up the Hash: 1 yard up, 3 yards outside right pipe Post Up: 1 yard up, 5 yards outside left pipe Midfield: M1: attack the pipe and force the top left defenseman to turn his shoulders M2: Follow and catch the ball at 17 yards in the middle of the cage React: If the defense holds or is slow to slide, shoot! If the defense slides: Follow: M2 is following M1 to step into a shot or move it to the back side

6 v 5 Yellow

6 v 5 Yellow Communicate: YELLOW Spacing: Don t stand next to someone and be a threat to score! Midfielder: Advance the ball to the attack once the situation is recognized M2 (first man down the field) CRASH THE CREASE! M1 and M3 must fill top two spots of the 1-3-2. React: Always cut to score and be ready for any open look from the attackman Once the ball gets to X, run Yellow (motion) offense. A2 Look for the Seal and slip when you first get the bal (A1 on slip or M3 on stepdown)

Even Breaks 4 v 4 Green

Even Breaks Communicate: GREEN from attack 4 v 4 Green Spacing: Point: 17 yards up, 5 yards outside pipe Rt: 1 yard up, 5 yards outside right pipe Lt: 1 yard up, 5 yards outside left pipe Midfielder: DODGE TO SCORE! (split left to right) React: If the defense holds or is slow to slide, shoot! If the defense slides you have three options: C-cut: Through/backside pipe: Show at BP early, and then get to X Follow: The point attackman follows the dodge for a step-down shot

4 v 4 VICK

4 v 4 Vick Lefty GREEN = Vick (QB Jets) Spacing: A1: 2 yards up, 8 yards outside pipe A2: 2 yards above crease A3: 2 yards up, 5 yards outside pipe Midfielder: Throw ball to A1 early, then sprint down to set pick for him to come over the top. Attack: A1 - catch the pass, quick dodge, and then run off the pick set by the middie Shoot Hit middie as he rolls out of pick Look through to A2 on back pipe Hit A3 for a shot if they slide to your face Roll out and keep possession A2 fade to back pipe, and also responsible for back up A3 Pop to shooting spot up top

5 v 5 or 6 v 6 Attack Communicate! Are we green? Or Yellow? Or Red? Midfielders Be the aggressor. Always assume you are going to cage until you are stopped

5 v 5 or 6 v 6 FIRST MIDFIELDER WITHOUT THE BALL CRASH THE CREASE!

In Conclusion Coaches have to do their part to make it the fastest game on two feet Sometimes saying/coaching nothing is the right thing Must keep players confident PRACTICE! PRACTICE! 2 v. 1 Midline GB to a shot Add it up 6 Ball Scramble
