A Non-Profit Organization SPARTANBURG SKI & OUTING CLUB Nov. 3 rd Club Meeting - Sarah McMann (Page 2) Nov. 26 th FENCE Barn Tour (Page 4) And Coming In December Dec. st - Hollywild Presentation Dec. 7 th - Club Christmas Party NOVEMBER 20 http://www.spartanburgskiclub.org

President's Message Fall is a wonderful time of year, cool crisp weather, colorful leaves and Oktoberfest beer. It's also time to tune up our skis and bodies for the upcoming ski season. Get out and take a hike, visit Alpine in Greenville or Banner Elk for new ski wax or find a deal on new equipment. Make plans to join club members in February for our Roan Mountain weekend and club race at Sugar Mountain. Locally we have our 'socials', Christmas Party and trip to Hollywild. Enjoy, Mark OLYMPIAN TO SPEAK IN NOVEMBER Sara McMann, 2004 Olympic silver medalist, is to be our speaker in November. She competed in wrestling beginning in junior high, continuing through college (Univ. Of Minnesota-Morris and Lock Haven University) and after graduating in 2003 with a theater degree, continued to train for the Athens Olympics, where she became the first American woman to win an Olympic silver medal in freestyle wrestling. Taking a break, she became a mother, then returning to competition, she changed her focus to mixed martial arts (MMA), another male dominated sport. Using her world-class wrestling skills as a base, she is adding jiu-jitsu and boxing to her repertoire with the goal of rising to the top of the MMA world. I urge everyone to come out and hear firsthand just what it takes to become a champion athlete. After all, it isn t everyday we get to meet an Olympian! We will again have drinks, cola and non-cola (one no sugar), and will experiment with a single light snack. As normal, you are invited to bring your own beverage. Jan Sarratt Page 2

DECEMBER ANIMAL FUN Come one, come all to our Dec. meeting where we will be having a selection of critters from Hollywild. Thanks to Alison Kimball for arranging this program with the Hollywild folks. The program will be longer than our normal length, so we will need to begin our meeting at an earlier time. Stay tuned for details in our next newsletter. This program will also be an excellent time to bring our skiing children/grandchildren along to learn about the animals. See you in December! Jan Sarratt SAVE THE DATE! SSOC CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY PARTY Oh yeah, the holidays are less than 2 months away Our holiday angel, Joy, has agreed once again to host our annual party at her home. There will be plenty of food and drink as usual and another Chinese auction. So start looking for that gift and write down the date and time. Saturday, December 7, 20 6:30 PM :00 PM Members $5.00 Non-members $20.00 Deadline is Saturday, December 0 (with the except) More details to be announced in your December newsletter or contact a Board member for more information. Page 3

F.E.N.C.E. Holiday Barn Tour The 20 FENCE Holiday Barn Tour will take place on Saturday, November 26th. You can visit 7 equestrian facilities and enjoy a self-guided tour in Landrum, Campobello and Green Creek. Exhibitions and demonstrations will be on the agenda so you can plan your visits accordingly. Lunch will be available midpoint of the tour at Motlow Creek Gardens in Campobello. Tickets are $0 and can be purchased through FENCE (828-859-902) or google "fence holiday barn tour 20" for more information. This is a great Thanksgiving weekend activity with visiting family and friends, or even some of our SSOC members. Page 4

NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 8 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
