\ OTTAWA DSTRCT HOCKEY ASSOCATON OTTAWA DSTRCT MNOR HOCKEY ASSOCATON THE NEUTRAL ZONE TRAP Th Nutral Zon Trap is an xtnsion of th basic 1-2-2 forchcking schm into th nutral zon combind with a two man trap forchck. n ordr to undrstand th Nutral Zon Trap, on must possss a rudimntary knowldg of forchcking schms. Th 1-2-2 applid in th offnsiv zon can b usd in thr ways. Ths ar: 1) Th 1-2-2 Man-to-Man 2) Th 1-2-2 Zon (high or low) 3) Th Prssur or Rotating 1-2-2. Anyon of ths may b applid in th nutral zon sparatly or as an xtnsion of th offnsiv zon by rtrating. Th two man trap can also b applid in ithr zon individually but rally cannot b utilizd in both zons simultanously as it rquirs two playrs. n th two man trap, th first playr attacks th puck carrir using insid out, thrby forcing th puck carrir to th outsid rducing his tim and spac. Th scond forchckr is stationd along th boards, about tn ft bhind th first, waiting for th puck carrir to arriv. f th first man is succssful, h will run right into th scond man; thus "th trap". Plas s appndics for diagrams. Thr ar thr nutral zon traps prsntly in vogu in th gam of hocky. Th first such mntion of th nam was in rfrnc to Jacqus Dmrs' systm with th 1992-1993 Montral Canadins. Th Canadins trap was a tru trap forchck usd in ithr th offnsiv or nutral zons and is still usd by th Canadins now. n this past sason, Jacqus Lmair (Nw Jrsy), John Muckr (Buffalo) and Jim Schonfld (Washington) also institutd this form of th trap. n this systm, whil th offnsiv tam is rgrouping in th nutral zon, th trap is "st". Th closst man to th puck carrir applis insid-out prssur whil th othr two forwards ar lind up along th Boards and down th middl of th rink (1-2-2 zon). Th only opn spac for th puck carrir to pass to is in th middl of th rink btwn th two forwards and th two dfncmn. Thrfor, th dfncmn play in lin with th facoff dots and ar rady to pinch into th middl on any pass rcivr. Th puck carrir may also attmpt to carry th puck up th boards whr h mts th scond forchckr or h can chip th puck up th boards crating a turnovr.. 0---------------------------------------0 1900 Mrival Rd., Suit 204, Npan, Ontario K2G 4N4 Tlphon: (613) 224.7686 Fax: 224-6079
\ -2- This systm can b applid to any tam with quick, smart forwards and agil smart dfncmn. Th two big kys ar spd and smarts. Th scond, nwr form of th nutral zon trap is th prssur 1-2-2 applid in th nutral zon. This is th currnt forchcking schm of choic with Pat Burns (Toronto, Darryl Suttr (Chicago), and Bob Gainy (Dallas). n this systm, th 1-2 part of th formation is constantly changing or rotating. Th forwards basically play (a 1-2-2) man-to-man but, if at any tim, th puck gos D to D, thn th closst forward applis immdiat prssur whil th othr two back up. with vry succssiv pass th rotation of prssur continus until cntr ic whr a 1-4 is st up. This is whr th trap is sprung, thrby limiting th puck carrir's options to stickhandling through four mn or dumping th puck in. Th first man may prssur in on of two ways dpnding on th coach. H may ithr tak a dirct or straightlin approach or h would altrnat btwn insid-out and outsidin dpnding on th availabl dfnsiv support. This systm can b applid to any tam with fast, physical, smart forwards with good nduranc. t can b vry tiring on th forwards and vry taxing on thm mntally. Th third most currnt and most boring form of th Nutral Zon Trap is rally th 1-2-2 High Zon Covrag. This systm is gnrally usd by th wakr offnsiv tams and is currntly mployd by Rick Bownss (ottawa), Kvin Constantin (San Jos) and of cours Rogr Nilson (Florida). n this systm only on man, usually th cntr, applis forchcking prssur down low in th offnsiv zon or at th blu lin in th nutral zon. Th othr two forwards play zon dfnc backing out lik a football cornr back. Thir zon is from th facoff dot to th boards and thy simply pick up any man ntring thir zon. Th dfncmn hr must play in lin with th dots and hav th "grn light" to stp up and tak th body on any pass rcivr floating through th middl. f th puck carrir bats th first forchckr, th dfnsiv wingrs stay on thir wings whil th dfncmn back up slowly until thy stand up at th dfnsiv blu lin (a 1-4 formation). Again undr this scnario, th puck carrir is forcd to turn th puck ovr via th dump-in. This is th systm to us with a tam of plodding, not ovrly intllignt playrs. t is simpl rsmbling a basic football play whrby all th playrs hav simpl rsponsibilitis that do not chang.
