UHROUGH WALL FASTENERS 3.1 Through wall fastnrs ar intndd to b usd for additional scurity whn scuring a backboard to a wall in "High-Risk" locations such as laundromats, garags, rooming hous hallways, construction shantis, amusmnt parks, and othr placs whr th phon is not undr th scrutiny of th propritor or cannot b sn asily by th gnral public. Bfor installing a through-wall fastnr, inform th subscribr of th rquirmnt to drill through th wall. f th subscribr objcts, and th st rquirs th scurity, rfr th mattr to your suprvisor. 2 SECTON Two typs of through wall fastnrs ar availabl and ithr typ may b usd dpnding on local rquirmnts. (1) Twin-Bolt Fastnr (Fig. 8): and tightn scurly. Us a larg scrwdrivr or an appropriat siz wrnch. (2) Long-Bolt Fastnr (Fig. 11) and Univrsal Mounting Plat (Fig. 12): (a) This fastnr will accommodat a mounting surfac which can vary in thicknss from 4 inchs to 7-5/8 inchs. Du to th dsign of th bolt and thradd shaft, it is not ncssary to cut th bolts to diffrnt lngths for varying thicknsss of walls. Whr thickr walls ar ncountrd, longr bolts shouljl b obtaind. (a) Th long bolt will accommodat a wall surfac up to 17 inchs thick. (b) This bolt can b usd with or without th univrsal mounting plat (Fig. 12). Whn th univrsal mounting plat is usd with two long bolts th sam ffct is obtaind as using th twin-bolt fastnr (Fig. 8). (c) nstall twin-bolt fastnr as follows: (1) nstall th backboard in th normal mannr xcpt rsrv th two cntr mounting hols (Fig. 9). Not: Whr possibl, straddl a stud or othr wall supporting structur with th fastnrs so that maximum strngth is obtaind (Fig. 1). (2) Drill two 3/8-inch diamtr hols through th wall or othr supporting surfac using th backboard as a tmplat. Not: Extrm car must b xrcisd to drill th hols prpndicular to th wall, othrwis, it may not b possibl to insrt th fastnr into th hols from othr sid of wall. (3) From back sid of wall, nlarg th hols to 3/4-inch diamtr to a dpth of 4-1/2 inchs. ( 4) nstall th shaft nut assmbly by placing it into wall from back sid. A small hol is providd in cntr of plat so it can b scurd with a nail until bolts ar installd. (c) For ordring information on th long-bolt typ fastnr, rfr to EL No Th univrsal mounting plat may hav to b fabricatd locally whil a sourc of supply is stablishd. (d) nstall long-bolt fastnr as follows: (1) nstall th 17 4A backboard in th normal mannr xcpt rsrv th mounting hols (Fig. 9) th long-bolt fastnrs. Not: which ar to b usd for Whr possibl, install bolts on ach sid of a stud or othr wall supporting structur, plat, making us of univrsal mounting so that maximum scurity is obtaind. (2) For ach long bolt, drill a 3/8-inch diamtr hol through th wall or othr supporting surfac using th backboard as a tmplat. Not: Th drill should b lind up carfully whil drilling to avoid unvn prssur on th cup had of th bolts whn thy ar installd. (3) nstall th bolts from back sid of wall, ' through th univrsal mounting plat, if applicabl, and scur backboard on front sid with th hx nuts providd. Not: f a univrsal mounting plat is usd, it can b scurd with a nail until bolts ar scurd. (5) nstall th two slottd hx-had bolts through backboard into th shaft nuts (4) Whn an outsid wall is involvd, apply a plastic duct sal to th cup portion Pag 2

(6) Using a cold chisl or cntr punch, scor th bolt thrads at hx nut to prvnt nut from backing loos.
