If you would like to be involved in another one please ring Tania Quinn 0448 557 528 NO Lions Market In March Next Market will be Saturday, 12th April Murray to Moyne Bike Ride The Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay had a humble beginning, when in 1987, Hester Woodrup and a team of Port Fairy women challenged her husband, Graham Woody Woodrup, the Port Fairy Apex Club and another team of local identities to ride in relay from the Murray River in Mildura to the Moyne River in Port Fairy. The very first ride, which would raise money for the Port Fairy Hospital, started at 2pm on Saturday afternoon and with riding through the night, was completed within 24 hours. Right from the first ride Woody saw the potential for the event and his dynamic personality and enthusiasm in those early years established the M2M and enabled it to grow into the huge event it has become today. That growth saw the event go from raising $10,000 in 1987 to an estimated $1.3m in 2011 when 1,204 riders representing 150 organisations rode on behalf of hospitals and health services throughout Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Woody himself was a cyclist of some repute with his legendary feats including riding from Perth to Sydney in 1988 a distance of 4,380kms which he covered in 10 days, 17 hours and 56 minutes! Many other rides were ridden and cycling records broken in order to raise money for the Port Fairy Hospital. Tragically, Woody's life ended while on a training ride on the 17th February 1992. While Woody threw out the challenge to everyone he met to get on a bike and have a go, he also set the example to be generous with your talents and help others whenever you have the opportunity. In memory of this marathon man of Australian cycling, and to honour his commitment to raising funds for hospitals and health services, the Murray to Moyne continues on today, with the 28th Annual Murray to Moyne on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th April. The Murray to Moyne has two goals: 1. To raise funds for Hospitals and Health Services throughout Victoria. 2. To continue Woody s dream of getting more people to realise the fabulous health and social benefits of riding a bike. Our girls have been training in readiness and will ride relay from Echuca to Port Fairy! The same five as last year, riding with the Boort group raising money for equipment for the Boort Hospital. What a great welcome back to our Friday Lunch at the clubrooms when the many who attended enjoyed the meal of roast chicken and vegies followed by sweets then coffee or tea for those who wished. We would always welcome others who would like to try the fellowship and hospitality that is part of these lunches. Those who played 500 on the 11 th were Trevor, Dave and Peg who were against Ivor, Wanda and Jessie, and this game ended with 3 games each The next games night was on Thursday 13 th when 7 played the game. Wanda was the winner with 2580 points. Ivor won the Secret Score and at the end of the evening a delicious supper was enjoyed by all. Surely the plan used by Powercor when they remove problem limbs and branches, would be suitable for all problem trees in the streets. That is a far better approach to tree problems. Surely if there was approximately two meters of the main trunk left from which a smaller tree would grow it would be preferable to the complete removal of all signs of a tree being taken away. Why are we not seeing planting of advanced trees on the nature strips, similar to those at the Swimming Pool and the Bowls Club? I have been long associated with the interests of this community and have seen many plans for beautification of our streets by planting trees, but all those plans just seem to disappear into the Too Hard Basket or be planted at the wrong time of the year and die from lack of water before they can take root. More District History Part 7- By Ern Ferris 1892 Dec 2. Court of Petty Sessions The Vermin Act:- John McLean, Government Vermin inspector, proceeded against Andrew Commons of Bald Rock under the 14 section of the Vermin Act 1890 for failing to comply with the clauses making it compulsory for land owners in rabbit infested districts to eradicate the vermin on their land. Mr Hoyland appeared for the prosecution. The inspector gave evidence showing that he inspected the defendant s land on 19h October; saw a large number of rabbits and found that no mens had been adopted to destroy them. Also inspected on the 16 th and 18 th November and found it was still in a vermin infested state.. On the former date discovered 95 burrows and saw 150 rabbits on the land and found no burrows dug out. The Defendant stated that he did make an effort to keep down the pest, had a man engaged 12 days digging out burrows and 1 day poisoning rabbits. 150 rabbits were dug out during the time. Mr Commons has 800 acres at Bald Rock. The Magistrate considered the case proved and inflicted a fine of 2 pounds with 3 pounds 3 shillings costs. Prices of Skins 1892;- Rabbits firsts 8 pence per lb, medium 3 to 5 pence per lb. Opossums firsts 6 shillings per dozen, seconds 1 shilling to 1shilling 6 pence per dozen. Fire 1893 Jan 6. A narrow escape from further losses through fire as the result of the quantity of dry grass, occurred in the Mologa district. From some unknown cause a fire sprang up in Mr Fyfe s paddock and began to spread rapidly and a number of neighbours took prompt and effective action to get the flames under control, and not any too soon, as the flames had reached within two or three yards of a good sized stack of wheat just harvested by Mr Townsend before they were beaten out. Reports of fires, many of them very destructive, come from many parts of the colony, and the number of them even thus early in the season, is equal to if not in excess of, the records of previous summers. 1895 October 4. To the Editor of the Advertiser When what is known as Sydney Watson s dam was constructed on Bullock Creek, it was understood that the bye-wash was on the west side of the creek, and the Swan Hill and Gordon shires recognised that by putting bridges across the bye-wash for a distance of six or seven miles at a cost of about 600 pounds. The water was allowed to go to the west for a time, and then some person on the creek below the dam made preparation for irrigating and raised the bank of the dam to such a height as to prevent the water from going down to the pump dam, in fact they use the Camden dam as if it was their own property, and flood the roads and frontages with impunity in order to get the water on their property and the Council winks at it. Because the crest of Watson s dam was lowered to allow the water to pass on to the Camden and a few people on the west are as much entitled to divert the water from the creek as anyone else put away and we are told by authority of the shire. Now, if it is wrong for the people living on what is known as Welch s creek to divert water to fill their dams it must also be wrong for the people of the Camden dam to raise the to such a height as to prevent the water passing on to the Pump dam. Moreover, this is not temporary, as in the case of the people living on Welch s creek, but permanently permitted to remain. As a matter of fact, as soon as the water rises height enough to go over and around the Camden dam, the horse and scoop are brought to work to prevent it going down further, the bank is raised until the truffle on the frontage is stopped, and at present the water is sent over the shire roads. I desire to draw to the Trust and the Council to the action of the people at the Camden and Sydney Watson s dams, as many of the tings done are done in the name of one or other of these bodies. Probably they do not know any thing about it, for some selfish people will stop at nothing. Several people did not finish this book and I could have been one of them, but I encouraged myself by not trying to pronounce the Norwegian place names and characters. Instead I simply learned to recognize whole words, a bit like learning to read with flash cards. After all, I did not plan to read it aloud, not all five hundred and sixty-two pages of it! The story begins at a fast pace in chapter one with a rape scene. Then on it goes with almost every evil one could think of. Swimming Carnival This was held in the railway dam, as this was the swimming pool. November 28, 1919 The Swimming Club held this event on Wednesday afternoon, when there was a good attendance of spectators and swimmers. The main feature was the lecture and demonstration given by Miss May Cox, Organizer of Swimming for the Education Department and one of her assistants Miss A Gillies. Miss Cox explained the department's programme for swimming and life saving. The first stage is for the Junior Certificate, for which the test is f to enter the water with a neat dive, to swim 50 yards and to float. The Senior Certificate is gained by 100 yards swim, to swim by breaststroke and also on your back without using your hands; then to enter the water fully clothed and get out of the garments while keeping on the surface; duck diving and diving feet first. For the Bronze Medallion the tests would be in swimming 150 yards, rescue and resuscitation, and entering in clothing equal to winter attire. This stroke is added to by the arms and hands being used as in under and over arm strokes. Breaststroke- Arms bent at sides and put straight ahead, feet together and legs bent, as arms sweep back, legs straightened, breathe out as the arms go forward inhale with the stroke. Side stroke- both arms used, legs trail. In the single over arm style the scissors kick is used. Trudgeon - Arms alternately over and back to the hip, scissor kick once to two arm strokes. Don't waggle the head, unnecessary movements use up strength which should be reserved. The Crawl - arm strokes similar to Trudgeon kick by bending the leg at the knee. While Miss Cox gave the instructions Miss Gillies demonstrated the movements and also showed duck diving, somersaults, spinning and rolling in the water. Both ladies next gave life-saving lessons, showing the breaking of the holds and methods of bringing a person out. If seized by the wrists the rescuer should quickly bring his hands inwards over the patient's arms, then downward and outward, which breaks the hold, pin the patient's arms to sides, twist him around to face away, place hands over ears, fingers towards the chin and swim out by backstroke. If seized round the neck- place left hand behind the waist, right palm under chin, fingers pinching nose, pull the waist in and force the head back, turn the patient and swim back stroke. A swimmer in trouble should face rescuer, place his hands on the latter's shoulders, keep the arms rigid at full length and legs wide apart, while the rescuer swims by the breast stroke. Rescue by side stroke. Rescuer throws left arm over the patient's shoulder, across chest and hand under arm pit, then swims side stroke. Grip for struggling person. Turn patient so that the back is to the rescuer, slip the arms under shoulders, hands brought up and gripping on top, swim out by back stroke. Bowls Report Saturday Pennant: At last we had some bowls action! Although play on Saturday was in jeopardy not because of the heat, but because of the rain!! Thankfully, both Division 2 & 3 played away from home which was a relief given the fact that the township was without power supply and there is no way that bowlers can cope without their cuppa at afternoon tea time. Division 2 travelled to Gunbower where they took on the challenge of the players and also the greens. Mitchell Johnson should eat his heart out with the bouncers that were being delivered! The greens slightly resembled the mogul course at Sochi. Apologies to the Gunbower folk if that sounds a bit harsh. Pyramid came way with a win thanks to the strong performance of the team skipped by Lionel. Their winning margin of 17 shots was sufficient to carry the other two rinks who only lost by small totals. Results were as follows: Lionel, Marie S., Andy & Terry won 29-12 on a day when everything turned to gold. Beau, Nola, Helen & Graham got off to a slow start but pegged back to draw level before finally succumbing to a 20-25 shot loss. Ian, Brian, Marie N., & Andrew started strongly but the opposition regrouped after lunch and managed to grab the lead on the second last end winning 19 21. Overall match scores were 68 to Gunbower 58. Division 3 enjoyed the journey to Barham Services but found the going all too tough as they fronted up to some high class opposition. The results were not absolutely indicative of the play and, if looking for a positive, all rinks made double figures. Ernie, Julie, Jean & Gladys lost 10 36 Les, Alan J., Guido & Allan F. lost 11 29 Charlie, John, Glenys & Robyn lost 13 28. I guess the term out-classed would be the best way to sum up the day! Other News Medley Day Star Tournament: A reminder to all that our Club will host a Medley Day Tournament next Wednesday 26 th Feb. This is a Star Tournament so we will be looking for plenty of catering assistance and probably a few players as well. The starting time is 10:00am. A group of 30 35 players from the Metropolitan area will be visiting us on Thursday 27 th Feb. We will be providing a luncheon and then joining them in a game of bowls. Please place your name on the sheet at the Clubhouse if you are able to play. We need as many players as possible and, of course, there will be the catering jobs to be done. Players are asked to provide a large salad. Dress code for the day is casual attire. Bare-Foot Bowls came to an end this week after 6 weeks of competition. Congratulations to the winners.
