The F 'C'S'LE Hunterdon Sailing Club, Inc. September 2012 Millard Fillmore Memorial Regatta In our annual recognition of mediocrity, Force 5 Fleet #36 will be hosting the Millard Fillmore Memorial Regatta on Sunday, September 16th. Registration at 9:30 am Skipper s Meeting at 10:00 am First of five races at 10:30 am Awards will be given as follows: The George Washington Award for 1st place The John Adams Award for 2nd place The Thomas Jefferson Award for 3rd place The Millard Fillmore Award for the sailor who is in the middle the most mediocre. In the event that we have an even number of competitors, this award will be given to the most consistently mediocre. Coming in first or last in any race makes this award more difficult to win. Millard Fillmore (January 7, 1800 March 8, 1874) was the 13th President of the United States, serving from 1850 until 1853, and the last member of the Whig Party to hold that office. He became the second Vice President to assume the presidency after the death of a sitting president when he succeeded Zachary Taylor, who died of acute gastroenteritis. Fillmore was never elected president. After serving out Taylor's term, he failed to gain the nomination of the Whigs for president in the 1852 presidential election, and, four years later, in the 1856 presidential election, he again failed to win election as the Know Nothing Party and Whig candidate. HSC was represented by Susan Mallows, Doug Cook, Guide Bertocci, and Simon Bertocci. Congratulations to Simon Bertocci (pictured at right and below), finishing in 2 nd Place for the Youth North American Championship! Sunfish Fleet News Wednesday Twilight Series The Wednesday Twilight Series for 2012 is now complete! There was a nice turnout throughout the year, including many new faces and Learn-To-Sail graduates. Thank you to all of this season s participants, and everyone that assisted with Race Committee. Labor Day Sunfish Regatta Hurricane Isaac sent plenty of wind, and just a little bit of rain, to challenge the participants in the annual Labor Day Sunfish Regatta. Doug Brown did a fantastic job leading the Race Committee, allowing for 9 races (!) to be completed by mid-afternoon! Congratulations to Brent Barbehenn, who won the day on tie breakers over Steve Manson. Guido Bertocci finished a close 3 rd. S e p t e m b e r 2012 T h e F o c s l e P a g e 3 Man Overboard THIS IS NOT A DRILL! On Sunday, August 26 th, Anita and I were cautiously heading out to the start of the 2 nd race, debating the wisdom of proceeding, as whitecaps (the dividing line for Charlie's Angels Chicken of the Sea skipper) were imminent. About halfway out, caution prevailed, and we started back with a jibe. Anita noticed that I had neglected to retain an iron grip on the tiller extension and OOPS I'm admiring the sky through a foot of Spruce Run water! After a rapid surfacing (thank you, life jacket!), a quick look around showed Anita moving aft to cope with the luffing sails (having finally ditched the captain) and the Jet-14 rapidly drifting away toward the campground shore. Rule #1 is to stay with the boat but it doesn't tell you how to catch the boat! With Anita just able to keep it upright, much less control it for a MOB rescue, she ultimately was able to get the jib down and coast back to the beach after about a half hour. So, as a first-time experience, a look around showed the only move to be a relaxing halfhour backstroke to the point across from the launch ramp, and many attempts to get attention from others. That was far more difficult than it sounds! YOU CAN NOT BE READILY SEEN in the water. Finally our hero, Ted Janulis, noticed the Jet - 14 with only one aboard, and looked around enough to spot me in the distance, sail over, report that Anita had control, and assist me. We were then able to get me a lift over to the launch ramp from John Eckert and his wife who had beached their Precision. While hopefully a once-in-a-lifetime event, one does wonder what is the solution for attracting help? SCUBA divers have orange blow-up noodles with them, some ten feet long. Keeping it simple, choosing a life jacket with a bright color can improve visibility. A whistle or small horn can also be clipped to your jacket to attract attention. Perhaps we should wear orange caps? --Charlie Engler HSC Rookie Regatta Saturday, August 18 th was the 2012 Rookie Regatta, the sailing race for HSC's newest sailors. The regatta was open to all new skippers, including those from the Learn-to-Sail program. This year s contestants enjoyed ideal conditions, with beautiful weather and NNE winds at 5 to 12 knots. It was a sunny, dry, blue sky day accented by big cotton clouds; a perfect summer sailing day. Bill Seiple won the regatta with 1 st place finishes in all five races nice sailing, Bill! The racing was competitive, however, with several close finishes. Noah DiRoberto finished in 2 nd place. Brinton Gibbons and Jim Sun tied for 3 rd place, with Brinton winning the tiebreaker. Tim McCarthy, Dan Peletier, and Chris Caputo rounded out the fleet.

Spruce Run may be dominated by sailboats in the daytime, but by night the fishermen rule! The full moon brought out the core of the NJ fishing community - a vibrant culture we don't often see in the daytime during our Sunday regattas. All I can say is that it was a very busy night at the boat ramp -- and a delightful night for a quiet sail out to the wires and back. --Jay Halsted, Commodore Staff Club Sunfish Mgr.
