HEADS LETTER NOVEMBER 16, 2017 CORBETT PREP ANNUAL FALL BOOK FAIR MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27 through MONDAY, DECEMBER 4 THE ANNUAL CORBETT PREP FALL BOOK FAIR will take place at Barnes & Noble on North Dale Mabry Highway beginning Monday, November 27 through Monday, December 4. The feel of holding a book is still so special! All proceeds go directly to support our Laney Library. Barnes & Noble donates a percentage of all sales to Corbett Prep during this week, including cafe purchases and cheesecake orders. This annual event provides an excellent opportunity for Corbett Prep families, alumni and members of the community to support the Corbett Prep Laney Library/Media Center. You can also shop online at http://www.barnesandnoble.com/bookfairs to support our book fair. Remember to enter our Book Fair ID 12253191 at checkout. Volunteers are important to help the book fair run smoothly! If you are interested in volunteering during our Fall Book Fair, please contact Ms. Bettyann Pitti at bpitti@corbettprep.com or Ms. Jenn Euliano at jeuliano@corbettprep.com. CLASS FIELD TRIPS for BOOK FAIR WEEK: Students in grades 3 through 8 will be visiting Barnes & Noble on class field trips. Look for the Book Fair Permission Slip and the Field Trip Schedule in this week s Thursday Folder! Please remember to purchase SCRIP to send with your child! Barnes & Noble scrip order forms are also included in this week s folder. The school receives additional funds when purchases are made with SCRIP. Students in Early and Upper Primary are invited to join us for Primary Night at Barnes & Noble on Wednesday, November 29. There will be stories and cookie decorating from 5:00 7:00 p.m. for our youngest book lovers. The highlight of our Primary Night will be a performance by our spectacular Spirit of IDS Chorus at 6:30 p.m. They love to sing for HUGE audiences, so please mark your calendars and plan to come for the fun and entertainment! Barnes & Noble also has fun store events taking place during our Book Fair Week. Friday, December 1, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. - The Polar Express Pajama Party - Activities following the story. Saturday December 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. - How The Grinch Stole Christmas Storytime with fun activities following the story. THE GRUNCH ARRIVES JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS! PLAN AHEAD! Just in time for the holiday season, CSA Corbett Prep s Community School of the Arts--presents its winter production, The Grunch, A New Children's Musical, Friday, December 1 through Sunday, December 3, directed by Julie Nelson and Jarrett W. Koski! Prepare to be entertained by 40 actors in grades 2-5, who have been rehearsing since September to bring you laughs and inspiration. Featuring singing, acting and dancing, The Grunch is a musical about a musical. As the name suggests, The Grunch is inspired by The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and tells the story of Rudy Grunch, a grumpy 6th grader who always feels like an outsider. When the entire school gets excited about the annual school musical, he comes up with a perfect plan to ruin it for everyone but will the spirit of theatre prevail and cause a change of heart? Before you know it, you will be shouting, "It's only the theater for me!" Performances are December 1 & 2 at 7:00 p.m., December 2 & 3 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 from cast members or the office. Tickets are available on the day of performances for $15. 1

CSS CORBETT PREP COMMUNITY SCHOOL for SPORTS is PROUD TO ANNOUNCE:The Ultimate Warriors 6-8 year old co-ed basketball team is headed to the championship game on Saturday!! After two big wins on Monday and Tuesday, the team has earned the right to play in the championship on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. as part of our Community School for Sports Fall League! Coach Carmyn Samuel and Coach Renae Sewell want to congratulate the team, including: Nia Armstrong, Lucas Borosh, Collin Carey, Marleigh Jagdmann, Arjun Nirgudkar, Anthony Travaglino, and Eric Walker Jr. on an amazing season and wish them luck in the championship! UPPER PRIMARY: International Baccalaureate Highlights and Update Report, by Mrs. Jones: All of our Upper Primary Students in the Brilliant Bugs, Cool Cats and Mighty Monkeys, are now deeply engaged in our International Baccalaureate programme of inquiry unit, How the World Works. During this unit the focus is on Architectural Design. Students are learning about structures from the past, the future, and different types of structures and how form follows function. The students have many opportunities to design like an architect and build like a contractor. They will build, rebuild, evaluate and rebuild again. As an exciting application of the concepts within this unit, Upper Primary went to LEGOLAND today where they explore, design, and create structures out of Legos. FIFTH GRADE TAKES LEARNING DIRECTLY TO SAVANNAH AND CHARLESTON: On Wednesday, November 15, fifth graders and many of their parents boarded busses to begin their journey to Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina, to connect directly with their studies of American History from Civil War days. This educational field trip takes students to the heart of where it all began, at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Our students are part of a flag raising ceremony at the fort, where they learn the significance of each element of the American flag. In addition, they participate in a scavenger hunt making historical connections, including finding remnants of artifacts in the fort s walls. Another key experience is a visit to Old Fort Jackson, where parents and students interact with demonstrations and simulations, including communication methods, medical care, soldiers apparel, and weaponry. There are so many concepts that emerge from the past that can be lessons for today. These annual trips bring classroom learning to life! We will welcome the fifth grade back home on Friday evening! EIGHTH GRADE DOCUMENTARY FILM PROJECT, by Mike Johnson Instructional IT Director: Following tradition, our eighth-grade students have been utilizing their inner Ken Burns to research, storyboard, film, edit, and produce a beautiful documentary film. The project is run in collaboration with C-Span's Student Cam national competition, where students compete with a 5-7 minute long documentary based on this prompt: "Choose a provision of the U.S. Constitution and create a video illustrating why it's important to you." One of the most important components of the project is to conduct interviews with experts on their topic. To date, we have had students talking to Marco Rubio, various members of local government, and even one student who is traveling to Gainesville, FL this week to interview the Director of the 1st Amendment Project. Keep your eyes on the Heads Letter for the first ever Corbett Prep Film Festival in February, when students will have the opportunity to showcase their hard work and creativity. CORBETT PREP SPIRIT STORE: The SPIRIT STORE will be open in the East Side Office on Friday, November 17 from 8:00 4:00 p.m. Make sure to stop by and pick up your Corbett Prep spirit wear. Show school spirit every day of the week and make shopping easy! Email lherscovici@corbettprep.com for more information. 2
