October, 2008 Michiana Bicycle Associa- From the President: This will be the last President s letter for 2008. Time has flown by this year. A lot has happened. Many bicycle accidents with two fatalities. Neither cyclist was an MBA member but they were a member of the cycling family. Let these tragedies serve as a reminder of how important it is to always be alert, visible and predictable while cycling. Cyclists have all the rights of motor vehicles but they need to obey all the laws and rules of the road as well. In order to gain respect, respect must be given. The MBA is a visible cycling club because of the number of members as well as the bright yellow jerseys/t-shirts worn. One of my major goals is to put teaching bicycling safety back in the MBA program. I will need help from you to attain this goal. I will chair the committee and will count on volunteers to help. I would like to go into schools, clubs, churches and anywhere asked to teach safety. In order to teach safety, we all must practice safety. Remember you are a member of the MBA and your actions reflect on the MBA. Many people come to me with complaints about rude cyclists thinking I represent all cyclists. Most of the complaints are not about MBA members but the general public thinks they are. I don t want you to stop having fun cycling but you need to keep your mind on what you are doing so you will reduce your risk of having an accident or becoming a statistic. The MBA has adopted a mile and a half section of Redfield Road (between Conrad and Brush). It s not a big deal. We walk along both sides of the road and pick-up, twice a year. And guess what?!? It s that time of the year again! So if you want to participate in a little community service, and make your next bike ride down Redfield a little more pleasant, come and join us. We ll meet at Mike and Gail Weaver s, 3354 Redfield Road, Niles, MI at 9:00 AM on Sunday, October 5th. The MBA will even provide gloves! (From the President, continued from Page 1) There will many committees formed this year to take care of club business. In order to have the committees successful, we will need volunteers to be on these committees. I will list the committees and if you are interested please contact me and I will let the chairman of that committee know. Most will not require much time but objective input from several members. These committees will help the MBA run more smoothly and hopefully solve some problems. The committees are: 4-day ride; bicycle education; advertising; club jersey; new/improved bicycle routes; awards banquet; redo the MBA by-laws, and ride scheduling. The chairman of each committee will be selected at the next BOD meeting. Please contact me at vrecla@aol.com or 269-684-1980 or in person if interested in being an active part in any of the various committees. Beginning with the first newsletter of 2009, it will be offered on-line in place of paper copy. I hope this will be the beginning of going green to help the environment. If you haven t returned your request to me opting out of the computer newsletter be sure you get one to me if you wish to continue getting a paper newsletter. A few of you have already sent in your request and I thank you for that. A questionnaire was sent out in the September newsletter. It is available on-line as well. This is to get some ideas of how to better serve the membership by offering better rides, routes, schedules, mileage etc. Please fill out one and get it back so the board can evaluate your comments and act upon them where possible. Anyone interested in being on the BOD for 2009 contact me - that includes officers as well as the BOD. Have a nice fall and winter, Vawn 4

The MBA Newsletter is now available for you to view and print from the MBA website: www.mbabike.com. This gives members the flexibility of printing the entire newsletter, or just parts (like the ride schedules), reduces printing and mailing costs for your club, and helps us all do our part for the environment. For the rest of this year, you will continue to receive a copy of the newsletter in the mail. Beginning January 2009, those who specifically request will be mailed a newsletter. To request to be placed on the newsletter mailing list, simply fill out the form below and send it in to the MBA PO box.
