GENERAL INFORMATION The Anoka County Fair Board Directors express their sincere appreciation to each of you for your time, talent and interests. We hope to make the fair the best week of your summer, so come and see for yourself what a good time you can have. The Fair Board Directors reserve the right to order the removal of any exhibit which is not in the best interest of the fair, which endangers the public, contains any profanity, nudity, defamation of any kind or nature towards any groups, or is entered in violation of the rules listed. In this case, any premiums or awards will not be awarded. The Fair Board Directors are not responsible for any damages to exhibits or livestock caused by fire, water, windstorms, theft, or act of God. The Fair Board Directors do not assume any liability for accidents to persons or property involved with the fair. Gate admission tickets are required for all exhibitors for entrance onto the fairgrounds. Gate admission is charged Tuesday through Sunday; adult $10.00, child (7-12) $5.00. Discount admission tickets are available at the Fair office for adults at a cost of $9.00 prior to opening day. Premium checks will be available Monday, July 30 when you pick up your entries. Exhibits will remain on display during the entire fair. Exhibits will be released Monday, July 30, between the hours of 1:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M. Livestock entries, please see below in General Rules for Departments: A-H for release times. Premiums will be awarded for each Division and Class as listed in Appendix B with sweepstakes awarded at the discretion of the judge. Judges will not award premiums unless articles are worthy of merit. If entry is not worthy of a premium, the judge has the right to withhold any awards with their decision as final (except where mistakes, fraud or misrepresentation exist and are not discovered at the time). In such cases, the Fair Board Director s decision will be final. 3

GENERAL RULES FOR DEPARTMENTS: A-H 1. Registration papers will be checked. 2. Entries are released at 5:00 P.M. Sunday. Vehicles will NOT be permitted on fair grounds until 7:00 P.M. on Sunday. 3. The official Veterinarian shall have full authority in all matters of livestock sanitation as the representative of the Fair Board. It is suggested that all exhibitors contact the official vet. All livestock health forms as required must be given to the superintendent when space is assigned. 4. First bedding for all large livestock stalls and pens will be furnished by the Fair. Exhibitors will furnish their own feed for all large livestock. Rabbit & poultry feed will be provided. 5. Only healthy animals can be exhibited. All certificates furnished to the veterinarian must be less than 90 days old. Animals with warts or ringworm are not eligible to exhibit. 6. Special parking space has been provided for livestock trucks and trailers. Gate personnel will direct you to parking spaces immediately after unloading. 7. APPENDIX A DEPARTMENT, DIVISION & CLASS LISTS APPENDIX B PREMIUM AWARDS 6

DEPARTMENT A-BEEF CATTLE *HALL OF BREEDS* 1. Divisions 9-13 must be ear tagged for I.D. DEPARTMENT B-DAIRY CATTLE 1. Grades without I.D. papers must be ear tagged for I.D. DEPARTMENT C-SHEEP 1. Base date for competing age is January 1 st. 2. Non-registered sheep must be ear tagged for I.D. 3. Sheep must have scrapies ear tag. DEPARTMENT D-DAIRY GOATS 1. Limit 12 animals per family. 2. Substitutions within classes permitted. 3. Awards: forfeit for leaving early. 4. Any other classes must be ear tagged for I.D. 5. Breeds divided, base date for ages is August 1 st. 6. Goats must have scrapies tag. DEPARTMENT E-SWINE 1. All classes must be ear tagged for I.D. DEPARTMENT G-RABBIT 1. Cooped entries limited to 2 per class. 2. The show superintendent is responsible for the exhibition of cooped entries. 3. Any special care of an entry is the responsibility of the owner. DEPARTMENT H-POULTRY 1. Please indicate Sub-Class in the Sub-Class entry line: Cock, Cockerel, Hen or Pullet. 2. Special prizes awarded: rosette for best of class. 3. Coops, care and feed will be provided. 4. All entries must be banded. Exhibitors limited to 2 entries per sub-class. Max 25 per person and 50 per family. 5. Official certificates are required for Pullorum and Typhoid diseases and found negative within 90 days prior to opening date. Diseased or animals unfit to exhibit will not be allowed in showroom. 6. Cooping limitations, entries may be limited and done in the fairest way. 7. No disqualified or eliminated animal will be awarded premium. ** All recognized varieties of each division ** Be sure to ID the breed and variety. 7

DEPARTMENT J-EAR CORN, HERBS 1. Please use correct count of specimens listed in class description. 2. Please weight any plastic water bottles with rocks. DIVISION 02-DISPLAY OF HERBS 1. Fresh Display: a. Stage in separate bottles with water. b. No blooms. c. Display must include four different garden-grown herbs that are bunched, tied, and labeled individually. 2. Dried Display: a. Stage in separate bottles without water. b. Grown for drying. c. Display must include four different garden-grown herbs that are bunched, tied, and labeled individually. DEPARTMENT K-FRUIT 1. Please label fruit with their variety. 2. All fruit must be grown during current year. 3. Please use correct count of specimens listed in class description. DEPARTMENT L-POTATOES AND VEGETABLES 1. All entries must be grown during current year. 2. Please label vegetables with their variety. 3. All entries must have correct count of specimens listed in class to be permitted for judging. Exhibit Preparation To assist in selecting and preparing vegetables for exhibit the following suggestions are made. Uniform size, shape, color, free of insects, disease, and mechanical damage. Carrots, Parsnips, Beets, Turnips, Rutabagas: Broccoli: Cabbage: Cauliflower: Celery: Collection of Herbs: Cucumbers: Egg Plant: Kohlrabi: Muskmelon: Root crops should be mature but not overgrown, pithy or course in texture. Tops trimmed of 1 1/4"above the crown. Side roots trimmed off but not the tap root. Clean by brushing. Heads should be dark or purplish green and compact. Avoid yellow flowers in head. Stems cut about 5" from top of head. Stems cut about 1/2" below the head. Remove blemished or broken leaves. Leave few wrapper leaves. Heads should be white, compact, free of small leaves and ricy texture. Stems cut to leave 4-6 leaves. Outer trimmed to 1/2" above the white head. Use soft bristled brush to remove dirt from head. Remove roots of stalk and trim butt to form a triangle for pyramid. Trim diseased and broken leaves on outside till uniform color. Cut herbs, label and put varieties in individual bottles of water. Pickling-select fruits 3-5" long. Specimens should be same stage of maturity and uniform in size, shape, and color. Select fruits that are straight, dark green, 6-10" long and uniform in shape, size, and color. Leave stems attached. Soft brush clean. Uniform in color, free from bronzing and greening. Stem left on. Roots removed just below the ball. Remove all but the center 4-6 leaves. Specimen's best if uniform, medium size and not hard or woody. Skin clean, but not washed. Select mature but not overripe fruits that separate easily from vines. 8

Onions: Peas: Peppers: Pumpkins: Have specimens mature and thoroughly cured. Neck should be small. Do not peel to give a slick appearance. Outer scales that are discolored or broken should be removed. Small basal roots should be left intact but trimmed to a uniform length of 1/2" long. A select bright green well filled pods with seeds in the best eating stage. Do not wash, as bloom should be preserved. Stem should be left 1/2" to 1"long. Select mature specimens where the rind resists pressure of the thumbnail. Fruits uniform in size, shape, color and free of defects. Leave stems attached to fruits. Radishes: Tap root cut 1/2", tops cut to 1/2" Rhubarb: Snap Beans: Summer Squash: Sweet Corn: Select stalks that are uniform, straight, and unblemished. Stalks should be pulled from the plant, not cut. Cut off blade leaf 2 above the stalk. Harvest before constrictions appear between seeds, when seeds are about half grown. Pods should be wiped clean but not washed. Leave stems attached. Select small size fruit with soft rind, easily punctured with thumbnail. Leave about ½ stem and wipe fruits clean. Select well-filled ears with kernels that is milky and juicy with husks that are to remain, allow a short shank. Table Onions: Roots trimmed to 1/2, bulbs un-peeled, trim tops (green) to 3. Total Length 6-8 Tomatoes: Watermelons: Winter Squash: Uniform size, shape and color. Fruits should be uniformly and free of cracks and blemishes with stems removed. Select fruit that are mature but not overripe. Leave 1" of stems on. Select mature specimens where the rind resists pressure of the thumbnail. Fruits uniform in size, shape, color and free of defects. Leave stems attached to fruits. DIVISION 07-HOME GARDEN COLLECTION 1. Flowers, special decorations, and staging accessories are not permitted. 2. Paper plates for staging and labels for naming of varieties will be furnished. 3. Collection to include six (6) kinds of culinary vegetables made from the following: Snap beans,1 quart Lima beans, 1 quart Cabbage 1 head Squash, 1 winter or 3 summer Sweet corn, 6 ears Onions, 6 bulbs 6 specimens of the following: Tomatoes, Large type, Carrots, Beets, Parsnips, Peppers, Rutabaga, Turnips, Kohlrabi, Cucumber. List name and variety of the six (6) specimen. DIVISION 10-YOUTH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE CREATION 1. Creation made from home-grown fruits and vegetables. 2. Assemble with string, wire, or toothpicks. 3. Identify creation. 9

DEPARTMENT M-FLOWERS, PLANTS AND ARRANGEMENTS 1. Entry must be grown during current year unless otherwise stated. 2. A pot or hanging basket may contain more than one plant of the same variety. Only 1 variety per pot. 3. LABEL FLOWERS WITH THEIR VARIETY and ENTERED IN CORRECT CLASS WHEN SPECIFIED. 4. Bottles will no longer be provided for your flower entries. Water will still be available for your convenience. 5. All potted plants exhibited in this class must have been in exhibitor s possession for at least 3 months. 6. Flowers are not judged by the container. Please use appropriate sized containers, not of value, for the entry. Does not have to be a vase. 7. Must have correct count of specimens listed in class. 8. American flag NOT allowed in show. Guidelines for Flowers 1. When 3 stems are called for, they should all be the same color. 2. Petunias should be washed with soapy water and the old seed pods removed from the stem. Guidelines for Lilies 1. Day lilies, Hemerocalliis, grown from plants, have a leafless scape (stem) and a class of their own. 2. Calla Lilies are in a class of their own. 3. Lilies are grown from bulbs, oriental are fragrant with large leaves. Tiger are splashed with dots and have re-curved petals. Trumpets have elongated flowers that form a trumpet. Asiatic are hard to describe. Use a seed catalog and compare your lily to those in the catalog to identify yours. 4. Do not remove anthers. Guidelines for Flower Arrangements Flowers: Quality and condition of flowers is very important. Flowers and foliage must be firm and has good texture. There should be no signs of disease or insects, foliage, and flowers should be clean. Color must be clear and bright. Flowers and foliage should be properly hardened. Flowers that wilt too quickly should be avoided (cleome, coreopsis, etc.) Flowers with sap need to be heat treated (poppies, dahlias, hollyhocks, etc.). Arrangement: Avoid crowding; airiness in design is very important. A well-planned arrangement enhances the beauty of the flowers in the design. Choice and creative use of color is important. Color harmony must be considered and colors chosen carefully to fit one of the following color schemes: 1. One color (monochromatic) 2. Neighboring colors 3. Complementary (opposite) colors 4. Triad colors that form three points of a triangle on the color wheel, such as red, yellow, blue. Flower shapes should be used in a harmonious and creative way. The arrangement should be in balance, either symmetrical or asymmetrical. The form of an arrangement must be appropriate for the intended use. For Example: table arrangement must be low enough to allow conversation across the table. 10

Container: The container should be simple, neutral in color and not compete with the flowers and foliage. White containers should only be used if there are white flowers in the arrangement. The container should complement the flowers, foliage colors, and textures. Container size must be in proportion with the size and shape of the arrangement. Principles of Design Entire flower arrangement should show the knowledge of the 6 principles of design: 1. Balance-a feeling of stability of the design. 2. Rhythm-a flow through the design that allows the eye to move smoothly from 1 area to another. 3. Dominance-1 color, 1 flower shape or one fine direction is "dominant" over the others in the design. 4. Contrast-gives variety to the design, could be done with texture, line or color. 5. Proportion-size relationships of flowers to a container, arrangement to surroundings. 6. Scale-size relationships of various parts of the flower design to each other. DIVISION 06-GARDEN CLUB EXHIBITS 1. Judged by effectiveness of telling a story, theme, quality of materials, neatness, and general attractiveness. DIVISION 07-ARTISTIC ARRANGEMENTS 1. Arrangements of cut flowers or cut plants. Accessories are permitted. Commercially grown flowers are not permitted. 2. Be creative. Give your arrangement a title! DIVISION 08-ARTISTIC DRIED WALL HANGING OR BASKET 1. Make with dried or preserved plant material with a hook to hang. 11

DEPARTMENT N-NEEDLE ARTS AND GARMENT CONSTRUCTION 1. All entries made by exhibitor and finished within the last year. Items cannot be exhibited more than one year. 2. General appearance includes: eye appeal, color and design, and condition of article. 3. Workmanship includes: cleanliness, uniformity of stitches, construction technique appropriate for specific class/class and finishing. 4. If you want to enter the Minnesota County Sweepstakes Quilt Contest (at the Minnesota State Fair) you must enter in Department N, Division 5 (Bed Quilts) to qualify. Only one entry per county will be accepted in accordance with Minnesota State Fair rules. DIVISION 13-WALL HANGINGS 1. Wall hangings must be prepared for hanging. 2. DEPARTMENT P-CULINARY ARTS 1. Only products of the home kitchen are eligible; no mixes unless stated. 2. Division 01-08 must use canning jars and lids! Jars must be labeled with: canning method, processing time, date canned (must be within last year). 3. Jars and covers must be clean and uniform size with a good seal. The jar should be full but not crowded. The fruit must have appropriate size and shape. It should be firm, in top quality condition and have characteristic color. Liquid must be clear, no cloudy settlement. Liquid should cover a product with adequate head space. 4. DIVISIONS 9-27: BRING ITEMS ON NEW SMALL PLATE INSIDE A NEW SEALED CLEAR PLASTIC BAG!! DIVISION 16-COOKIE JAR SPECIAL 1. 4 cookies, homemade, in a decorated container by the exhibitor. 2. Decoration should be related to the type of cookie displayed. 3. Jar and cookies considered in judging. DIVISION 19-CAKE DECORATING YOUTH DIVISION (AGES 17 AND UNDER) 1. Decorated cakes are judged for decorative skills and overall eye appeal. 2. DEPARTMENT Q-HOMEMADE WINE AND BEER DIVISION 01-WINES-HOMEMADE 1. White Wines may not be more than 2 years old. All wines may be made from any fruit, vegetable, grain, or juice commonly used in the making of wine. 2. Each entry must be bottled in a 1/5 gallon clean container with either a cork or screw cap stopper. It should be covered, secured by a brown paper bag around the neck of the bottle. Mark the appropriate category number on each bag with any other information appearing. 3. Labeled bottle to contain the following Info: a. Type of wine and content (ex. Chokecherry wine, burgundy type). b. Name and address of the maker. c. Recipe credit, not original of maker's. d. Date (month, year) of fermentation. e.
