Training A Training and Education Update for PADI Members Worldwide SECOND QUARTER 2008 Product No. 01222 In This Issue 2-4 The PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Course 5 PADI elearning Translations in 2008 5-6 Update RSTC Releases New Standards Document Boat Diver Instructor Guide and Boat Diver Manual Errata 6 Emergency First Response Online Instructor Refresher Forms Update 6 New and Revised Forms Training Bulletin in The Undersea Journal The Training Bulletin required reading This update is the main communication from PADI to you. It announces important training standards and procedures changes and clarifies those that are established. It is a requirement of your membership commitment that you keep abreast of standards by reviewing the information contained in these quarterly updates. Implementation and standards mailing dates vary for members served by different PADI Offices, based, in part, on translation schedules. Check with your PADI Office for more specific information. Starting with the First Quarter 2008 edition, the Training Bulletin, English version, is printed inside The Undersea Journal instead of distributing it separately. This change allows you to read about significant standards changes and technical information in the Training Bulletin while quickly referencing supporting articles in The Undersea Journal. In other languages the Training Bulletin remains a separate means of communication. Remember that Training Bulletins are required reading for PADI Members, so always look for it inside the magazine. You can continue to find downloadable versions of the Training Bulletin in English and other languages at padi.com/pros Site/Members Toolbox/Training Bulletins.

Following the same instructional model as other PADI courses, knowledge development can be accomplished through independent study while skills practice can occur wherever it is most conducive to learning, for example on the beach, the boat, pool side or in the classroom. Though suited to divers, the course has no prerequisites and doesn t include dives, which means it is equally applicable to those who are around divers (for example boat crew, nondiving buddies and shore staff). Knowing how to perform CPR is recommended for participants, but not required. This course complements both the PADI Rescue Diver course you can teach the Emergency Oxygen Provider course as a substitute for the emergency oxygen segment of the Rescue Diver Course and the Emergency First Response Primary Care course. Teaching qualifications To qualify for the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor rating: PADI Divemasters and Assistant Instructors attend a PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Instructor Training Course and apply using Specialty Instructor Application Method 1. PADI Instructors may attend a PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Instructor Training Course (Specialty Instructor Application Method 1), or provide proof of a qualifying emergency oxygen providerlevel certification and apply directly to PADI using Specialty Instructor Application Method 2. PADI Course Directors may apply for the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Instructor rating as an instructor using the options described and subsequently for the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Instructor Trainer rating. If you already hold a PADI oxygen-related distinctive specialty instructor or trainer rating, you have two options: 1. Add the new PADI Specialty Instructor (and/or Trainer) rating to your existing ratings and continue teaching your distinctive Page 2 Training Bulletin Second Quarter 2008

oxygen provider specialty in addition to the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provide course. In this case, use the Specialty Instructor (or Specialty Instructor Trainer) Application as usual when applying for a new rating. 2. Exchange your distinctive specialty instructor rating for a PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider course Instructor (and/or Trainer) by using the Specialty Change Request form. There is no charge for this rating change. Download forms or applications from padi.com Pros Site/Members Toolbox/Forms. Materials Requirements PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider course materials required for the instructor include: PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Course Instructor Guide (Product Number 79118, English) PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Manual PADI Emergency Oxygen Care at a Glance reference This handy card is perfect to keep in your oxygen or first aid kit. It offers detailed prompts for providing oxygen from setting up the equipment to administering the oxygen and works well with the PADI Accident Management Work Slate. Participants must have, in their possession, the student manual for study and use during the course and reference afterward when available in a language they understand. The manual is packaged with the Care at a Glance reference in a specialty-pack (Product Number 82219, English). A translation of these materials in other European languages is not decided or planned yet. Once they become available PADI Europe will inform accordingly. PADI Course Directors who are Emergency Oxygen Provider Specialty Instructor Trainers can download lesson guides from the Pros Site as soon as they are available at padi.com to help them teach their specialty instructor courses. These lesson guides are designed to review the course requirements while going over teaching techniques, especially when conducting specialty instructor training for PADI Divemasters. Equipment Requirements Specialty equipment Refillable, variable rate emergency oxygen unit that includes the following: Oxygen cylinder and valve Filled oxygen cylinder for students to breathe from during the course Multifunction regulator capable of delivering at least 15 litres-perminute (lpm) of oxygen Training Bulletin Second Quarter 2008 Page 3

oxygen provider Non-rebreather mask (one for each student) Pocket mask with oxygen inlet Demand inhalator valve with mask Manually triggered resuscitator valve (only required when teaching the optional skill) For more information about the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider course see PADI s Newest Specialty Course Emergency Oxygen Provider in the Second Quarter 2008 edition of The Undersea Journal, and for important background information see Why Oxygen is Important for Decompression Illness (DCI) First Aid in the First Quarter 2008 edition of The Undersea Journal. Rescue Course Integration Your PADI Rescue Diver students can earn the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider certification when you substitute the specialty course for the Rescue Diver course oxygen components. Here s how to do it, as explained in the Knowledge Development and Skills Development charts of the specialty instructor guide: A. Have your PADI Rescue Diver students read their PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider Manual in addition to the PADI Rescue Diver Manual. During knowledge development sessions, student divers should already be familiar with the following topics, thus saving review time: Diver Knowledge Development Presentation 1: D. Being Prepared for a Diver Emergency 2. Emergency Oxygen Delivery Systems Rescue Diver Knowledge Development Presentation 4: C. Accident Management 1. First Aid for Decompression Illness 2. Near Drowning Rescue Diver Knowledge Development Presentation 5: B. Being Prepared for a Diver Emergency 1. Use of Emergency Oxygen B. Have student divers attend the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider skill development session as a replacement for: Rescue Exercise 9 First Aid for Pressure-related injuries and Oxygen Administration Note: While first aid and CPR training is not required for the PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider course, it is still required in the PADI Rescue Diver course prior to Knowledge Development Presentation Two and Rescue Training Session Two. elearning PADI elearning Translations in 2008 The PADI elearning program has been tremendously successful, with more than 5,000 elearners to date, and shows even more promise for the future. That s why in 2008 you ll see the translation of the PADI Open Water Diver course online knowledge development section into Japanese, followed by Spanish and German later in the year. For more information on how you can set up your online classroom along with tips and tools you can use to promote PADI elearning visit the IRRA Toolbox in the PADI Pros Site at padi.com. update RSTC Releases New Standards Document As of February 2008, the Recreational Scuba Training Council (RSTC) ratified a new industry standards document Minimum Course Content for Entry Level Rescue Diver. The first of its kind in the industry, PADI, along with the other member organizations of the RSTC, collaborated on this effort, and all agree to abide by the content requirements. Like all RSTC projects, there is 100 percent consensus among the training organizations on the final document. There are no changes to PADI standards as a result of this new industry standard. Download this document as well as any of the RSTC minimum course content documents from padi.com/pros Site/Members Toolbox/RSTC, or from the RSTC website, www.wrstc.com. Boat Diver Instructor Guide and Boat Diver Manual Errata There are some minor inaccuracies in the recently-released Boat Diver Instructor Guide and Boat Diver Manual. Before you teach this program download the errata from the Training and Education section of the PADI Pros Site so that you can convey the correct information to your divers.
