LOCATION Mermaid Beach AEME Surf Life Saving Club is located on Hedges Avenue, Mermaid Beach. Our club is in close proximity to Broadbeach, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Oasis Shopping Centre, Jupiters Casino, the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre, the Gold Coast light rail, local restaurants and a vast number of high and low-rise accommodation units which supply an endless stream of visitors, who choose to swim, walk, jog, surf or just relax at Mermaid Beach.
FOUNDATION Mermaid Beach AEME Surf Life Saving Club was established in 1945 by members of the Australian Army. The Clubs full name still includes AEME - Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers after the Corps of its founding members.
MERMAID BEACH AEME SLSC With a reputation as a family Club and surrounded by what is colloquially referred to in the real estate industry as millionaires row, our Club boasts an annual membership of nearly 900 active and award members including a strong contingent of 300 Nippers between the ages of 6 to 14 years and their families. Our total membership is 4,000 including Social Members and we attract over 80,000 visitors to the Club every year.
CLUB MISSION The Club s mission is: To be a premier Surf Life Saving Club in order to provide excellence in Surf Life Saving Services to Mermaid Beach In order to achieve this mission, the Club conducts the following activities: BEACH PATROLS SURF SPORTS COMPETITION JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT (NIPPERS) YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AWARDS INSTRUCTION COMPREHENSIVE COACHING SERVICE LICENSED CLUB AND FACILITIES
BEACH PATROLS The Club is responsible for the safety of the bathing public at Mermaid Beach every weekend and during public holidays between September and May each year. In fact, the Club spends over 5,000 volunteer man hours each year patrolling our beaches and keeping Mermaid Beach safe for local residents, visitors, tourists and all beach-goers alike. To assist members in this task, the Club maintains a vast array of rescue equipment including all terrain Vehicles, inflatable rescue boats, rescue boards, rescue tubes, defibrillators and oxy-vivas. Members wear an easily identifiable uniform and make use of an observation tower and patrol trailer during their patrol. The Clubhouse has a fully equipped first aid room to render assistance to those in more dire need.
JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT Each year Mermaid Surf Club provides education and training to approximately 300 junior members (nippers). Children aged between 6 and 14 gather every Sunday morning during summer to hone their beach and surf skills. A network of volunteers ensures the nippers are well catered for from registration, water safety, skills instruction, even canteen and clothing sales. The goal of the nippers is to provide an enjoyable introduction into the surf environment and to prepare children to be our future lifesavers and achieve the Bronze Medallion award the starting point for the senior lifesavers.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT The Club offers a high quality Youth Development program designed to retain members in the ages between Nippers and adult life savers. Activities conducted include leadership camps, trips to other surf life saving clubs, team building and personal challenge activities which are all designed to enhance the life skills of our youth and to provide a pathway through to being adult life savers. The Club was honored in 2011 with the Surf Life Saving Queensland award of Youth Development Club of the Year.
AWARD INSTRUCTION All surf life savers must complete the Bronze Medallion award before undertaking any surf club activities. Once completed, the Bronze provides a launching pad for a spectrum of specialist awards such as First Aid, Advanced Resuscitation, Radios, Inflatable Rescue Boats, Jet Boat and Jet Ski, Bronze Squad Instructors, Examiners, and even Helicopter Duty. Each year all lifesavers must again prove their competency by passing an annual proficiency test.
SURF BOATS COMPETITION EASILY THE BIGGEST RECRUITMENT TOOL FOR SURF LIFE SAVING IS THE COMPREHENSIVE COMPETITION PLATFORM OFFERED BY SURF SPORTS. PERHAPS THE MOST SORT AFTER PROFILE FOR SPONSORS IS THE CANVAS PROVIDED BY THE CLUB S COMPETITION SURF BOATS. These impressive craft provide space for major sponsorship and are towed all over the Gold Coast for training weekly. Club boats regularly participate in carnivals all over South East Queensland, northern New South Wales and Sydney and are often in the media. There are currently great opportunities for sponsors as the Club replaces its two existing surf boats over the coming season.
COMPREHENSIVE COACHING SERVICE. Each year Mermaid Beach Surf Club engages the services of reputable accredited coaches to perform skills and fitness coaching for all members including our junior members. This coaching service is provided free of charge to members and covers all disciplines, standards and ages. The results of this service are evident by the level of fitness and achievement attained by our members. These programs are also designed to link children into our junior activities and hopefully on to becoming our lifesavers of tomorrow. Our award winning coaching team is Mike Janes, Kurt Gislingham, Damien Gulliver and Andrew Murphett.
SURF SPORTS Surf Sports is currently a high priority development area for the Club that has been identified by Club Management as a means of promoting growth and attracting junior members into the patrolling senior ranks. The Club Surf Sports Team currently competes in the following disciplines: o SURF BOATS o CRAFT (BOARD, SKI) o BEACH (SPRINTS, FLAGS) o SWIM o SURF BOARD RIDING o LIFE SAVING Competitors may be from 8 years old to over 70. All competitors (with the exception of Juniors) must be qualified lifesavers that are proficient in their awards each year and are part of a patrol group contributing to community safety at Mermaid Beach. In this way Surf Sports has a direct link to the Club s mission. SURF SPORTS PLAY A KEY ROLE IN ATTRACTING MEMBERS AND IMPROVING LIFESAVING SKILLS, FITNESS AND MOTIVATION OF EXISTING CLUB MEMBERS.
SUPPORTERS CLUB The Mermaid Beach Surf Club Supporters Association operates licensed food and beverage facilities that provide financial support for the Surf Lifesaving Club. Housed on the first floor of the Clubhouse, the licensed Club takes advantage of the unique beachfront location and is a popular alternative to the many locals, tourists and visitors to the area. The Supporters Club holds the liquor and gaming licenses on behalf of the Surf Club and donates all profits for use in the day to day running of all Surf Club services. The licensed Club has all the facilities expected in the hospitality industry including a bar, bistro, gaming machines, keno and a membership of over 3,000 members.
SPONSORSHIP Mermaid Beach Surf Club management and staff are devoted to creating a mutually satisfying relationship between the Club and those businesses that choose to support us. Traditionally sponsors are given name and brand exposure in return for their contributions. SPONSORSHIP BENEFITS ENHANCED SPONSOR PROFILE Club Surf Sports equipment is used on average 20 times per week during the competition period of October to April. The team regularly receive media coverage including local newspapers, Foxtel sports and free to air coverage of key carnivals. CONTRIBUTION TO SURF LIFE SAVING Sponsorship allows the Club to update services and equipment. In turn this encourages potential competitors and surf life savers to join the Club and to develop levels of fitness, teamwork and discipline that enhance their effectiveness as life savers. MERMAID MATES Mermaid Mates is a group of businesses that make an annual contribution of $1,000 to a fund for the provision of surf sports equipment for the Club. Funds raised finance the replacement of old competition craft (e.g. boards, surf skis, boats etc) with new equipment to ensure the safety and competitiveness of our members and with an aim of continuing to improve our achievements in Surf Sports. Mermaid Mates help to ensure we have highly skilled and fit personnel to look after our beach going public. Mermaid Mates are recognized by an honour board located prominently inside the Club s licensed area.
SUMMER SURF GIRL Monica Wilkie Monica s wheels in motion campaign as a Summer Surf Girl seeks to raise the much-needed funds for Mermaid Beach AEME SLSC to purchase a new club bus, as well as surf safety and rescue equipment necessary to keep our beaches safe. The Summer Surf Girl Program encourages women in lifesaving to take on leadership roles in their clubs, promoting community awareness and education for surf lifesaving, while also being the largest annual fundraising initiative in Surf Lifesaving Queensland. DONATIONS MADE TO THE CLUB IN SUPPORT OF MONICA CONTRIBUTE TO HER FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR THE SUMMER SURF GIRL PROGRAM.
