February 2014 Regatta Season! This month s regattas started with the Moth Winter Series #1 National Championship on Jan 3-5. Moths are one man boats equipped with foils that enable them to rise up above the water and skim the surface with minimal drag. These boats are capable of speeds in excess of 2 times the wind speed. So they are 20-30 mph boats. Made with carbon fiber and Kevlar, a Moth will weigh about 65 pounds. Watching them is as much fun as racing them. On Jan. 11th and 12th the Commodore s Regatta, sponsored by West Marine, gave both Portsmouth monohulls and catamarans a chance to compete on Saturday. Sunday brought out PHRF boats for a good day s race. Participants and race watchers alike enjoyed a smoked beef brisket dinner on Saturday. Next, on Jan 17-19th came the Dead Dogs and Tin Whistles Regatta. This was a fun regatta for Buccaneer sailboats and Mutineer sailboats. Buccaneers (Bucs) are 18 ft., 600 lb spinnaker equipped monohulls. Over 5000 have been built. At 15 ft long and 419 pounds Mutineers (Mutts) are a similar design and are also spinnaker rigged. Well over 6000 Mutineers were produced. A Saturday night Pig Roast made this regatta a good party. January 25th we hosted the Community Bank Regatta. An All-comers race was the racing event for that day. With separate starts and different courses both Portsmouth and PHRF boats raced at the same time. A grill your own steak dinner rounded off the day. This is a popular event sponsored by Community Bank. A big thank you to our sponsors West Marine and Community Bank. Thanks to Tom Chambers who was the head chef for the regatta dinners. And of course thanks are due to all the members who helped cook, clean and plan these events. February 2014, Page 1
