Class Exhibiting Requirements The Mahaska County 4-H Youth Committee has set a policy for classes and shows for the county fair. In order to hold a show at the Southern Iowa Fair, we must have a minimum of 3 youth from 2 different families (4-H or FFA) registered to exhibit a particular species. Don t forget that animals must be registered in 4hOnline by May 15, 2018. Classes with fewer than 3 exhibitors from 2 different families will be placed on hold for the current year. Classes will be determined after all ID information has been received on May 15. If classes meet the minimum requirement by identification in May, the show(s) will be held. This newsletter was prepared and written by Amy Brainard, Mahaska County Youth Coordinator. Amy can be reached by calling 641-673-5841 ext. 28 or by emailing vermeera@iastate.edu. 3 Dog Classes Dog Classes will begin in April. First year exhibitors must attend at least 8 of the Mahaska County 4-H offered classes and second year+ exhibitors must attend at least 6 of the Mahaska County 4-H offered classes to be eligible to exhibit at the Southern Iowa Fair. You may identify more than one 4 bucket/bottle animal, but only one may be exhibited at the fair.

Swine Weigh-in & Rule Updates Swine Weigh-in will be held on Saturday, March 24 from 8:00-10:00 AM in the Maintenance Shop at the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds. 4-H & FFA youth planning to exhibit at the Southern Iowa Fair are permitted to weigh-in six pigs in spring with a maximum of three eligible to show at the county fair, see exception below. An additional six may be weighed in for the new Pen of 3 class. NEW: Pen of 3 Swine must be identified with special feeder pen tags at the spring weigh-in. Each exhibitor can weigh-in 6 pigs for this class. Exhibitors must choose 3 to bring to the fair. Pen of 3 pigs will not have ultrasound done at fair weighin. Pen of 3 will be stalled in one stall, not separately. Pigs will be judged during the show by the judge on: uniformity, rate of gain, & overall quality. Class Options include Commercial Gilt, Purebred Gilt (must have 5 to establish class & papers are due at fair), Market Swine, Derby Swine, and Pen of 3 Swine. The requirement of having at least one derby pig applies to all individual entries. If just exhibiting a Pen of 3 Swine, the derby requirement does not apply. We will NOT have a Purebred Barrow Class or Carcass Swine Class this year. These are classes that have been suggested and are being taken into consideration for future years, but WILL NOT be classes this year. We are sorry for any confusion about these rumors. Southern Iowa Fair Contact Info If you would like to inquire about camping or exhibiting in Open Class at the Southern Iowa Fair, please contact Erica Antolik at the Southern Iowa Fair Office at 641-673-7004 or email sifair@mahaska.org. The office is currently open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. 5 YQCA for Livestock Exhibitors Mahaska County is no longer offering FSQA (Food Safety & Quality Assurance). Those who took the FSQA test and are certified through 2018 will not be required to complete YQCA. YQCA is required for Mahaska County 4-H & FFA members who plan to exhibit Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep, Beef, Dairy, Swine, & Meat Goat (excludes bucket/ bottle) at the county/state fair. YQCA certification is designed to be useful and help prepare you for your show but also prepare you as a young producer in the animal agriculture industry. That s why the program includes information on multiple species even though you may only be raising one or two we hope you see that by raising animals you are part of a larger community that relies on the good faith of everyone doing their part. YQCA Training is required each year for those who will exhibit at the county and/or state fair and costs $12.00 per year. If you would like to receive financial assistance, please contact the Extension office. We have limited funds available. If applying for financial assistance, a coupon code will be provided to you by the Extension office. You will use your 4hOnline credentials to log in to YQCA. Please have those credentials, along with a credit card, available when you prepare to complete the YQCA training online: https://yqca.learngrow.io/account/login. Training can be completed at the Extension office by appointment only. Call 641-673-5841 or email vermeera@iastate.edu to schedule an appointment. We are not offering a FSQA test-out option this year. YQCA is currently working on a test-out option for members. All Mahaska County 4-H & FFA members must complete the training in 2018, unless currently certified for the FSQA test (2018 only). YQCA MUST BE COMPLETED BY JULY 1, 2018. 6

4-H & FFA Youth Shows Sponsorship The Southern Iowa Fair is quickly approaching and our 4-H and FFA members are working very hard to complete their projects and create exhibits to be judged at the county fair. To provide a quality experience for the youth, we hire judges with experience and training in youth development for our exhibiting classes. The judges that we hire come at a price and we are in need of 4-H and FFA Fair Judge Sponsors. The average livestock judge s fee is around $300.00 and the average non-livestock judge s fee is around $100.00. Last year, the 4-H and FFA judges fees totaled just under $5,000. 4-H & FFA Rule Booklets 4-H & FFA Fair Rule Booklets will be printed, one per family, and provided to club leaders at the Spring Leader Training on April 25. The updated fair booklet has been uploaded to our website at www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska/page/4-h-fairaward-forms. If you notice any date, time, or detail discrepancies in the booklet, please notify a superintendent or Amy at the Extension office. Another cost of the youth shows at the Southern Iowa Fair is premiums. Each 4-H and FFA member receives money for the ribbons they earn. Purple and blue ribbons are $2.00 each, red ribbons are $1.00 each, and white ribbons are $.50 each. Last year, the premium payout for 4-H and FFA youth was just under $3,000.00. The final cost of the youth shows at the Southern Iowa Fair is awards and recognition. Trophies, banners, plaques, and ribbons are awarded to those who do very well in their fair classes. These materials are purchased early and locally to save on the cost but still end up costing quite a bit. The awards and recognition items have been paid for by local sponsors in the past. We are no longer asking for specific trophy donors, but are asking for 4-H and FFA Youth Show Sponsors. Last year, we spent over $4,500.00 on trophies, plaques and ribbons.
