September 2016 Volume 38, Issue 9 A Diablo Valley Mustang Association Publication HE S ON HIS WAY Early Saturday morning, August 27, Ron Freitas began his cross country journey that will finish up in Indianapolis, IN for the Mustang Club of America s 40 th Anniversary from September 1-3. A total of 6 Mustangs and 1 truck set off on a beautiful back-roads tour up Historic Hwy 40 through the gold country (and Belinda Blair s hometown of Loomis). A bathroom stop on I-80 turned into a crazy yellow jacket attack in the parking lot. Let s just say there was a whole lot of swatting, swiping, ducking and weaving going on! We got away from there unscathed and pushed on to the Summit Restaurant at the top of Donner Pass. Several cars left us after lunch to go their separate ways and 4 cars continued on. Next stop was the Donner State Park and museum that chronicled the terrible fate of the famous Donner Party back in the early pioneer days of California. Ron seemed unimpressed, shall we say, by the sad tale of the Donner Party as we caught him snoozing during the informational movie. Z-z-z-z-z-z. Then it was on to Reno where we bid Ron farewell and sent him on his way, wishing him safe travels as he continues to pick up fellow 40 th Anniversary travelers over the next few days. They re going to have a great trip!

DVMA Dispatch President s Message Thank you, everyone, for voting for me to lead DVMA into this next year. It won t be easy to fill John s shoes, but I will do the best that I can do. Congratulations to the Board members, who were also elected to share DVMA s future and planning. Board members begin their term of office on Sept 1. The next Board meeting will be Sept 26, for both past and future Board members. Think about your own involvement with DVMA and together we can grow, prosper, and have a great time in the next year. The Installation dinner is being held in October this year, and will be a fun time at The Cobra Experience in Martinez. I hope all of you will be able to participate. Members should know that the cost of $20 per person is not the total cost; DVMA is paying $15 per person everyone to enjoy the dinner and facility. Pay in advance and make your reservation; no door entries. CAR OF THE MONTH BY VINCE CASEY 1968 Shelby GT 350 Hertz I bought the car in 1979 while living at home in Glendora, CA and going to Cal Poly Pomona and working part-time at UPS. This was one of several cars my family or friends bought with the help of Paul Corbin who was a well-known Mustang/Ford enthusiast who owned about 400+ Ford cars over the years. In addition to the Shelby, we bought a 1970 Cougar, 1968 Mustang GT, 1969 Mach 1 428SCJ, and other cars with Paul s help. I think we owned about 20 Mustangs/Cougars over the years in my family and enjoyed driving and working on them. I spent most weekends cruising in Covina/Glendora area with friends, going to In-n-Out to hang out, with occasional trips to Whittier Boulevard for Saturday cruise nights. This 1968 Shelby was originally a rental car and sold by Robert Loud Ford in Pasadena and eventually I bought from Paul s friend Richard who was using it as a daily driver. Richard agreed to a down payment and I then paid him $500 a month in person until the car was paid off with the total purchase price being $5,500. When I bought the car it was painted red lacquer which was over a pearl white which was over the original lime green metallic. The car had all the original equipment with the exception of the hubcaps which had been replaced by 1971 hubcaps. The car came with a C4 automatic transmission, air conditioning, AM radio, power steering and brakes, and tilt wheel. I found an original build sheet under the passenger side front carpet during the rebuild. The exhaust was modified with Hooker headers and dual turbo mufflers and sounded nice, but a little loud. I drove the car for 4-5 years while finishing up college and starting my first job at McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach in 1982 where my wife Tracey and I met on our first day and dated for several years and finally ended up getting married in 1986. I put the car in storage and disassembled the engine and interior with the hopes of beginning restoration. The car project kept getting put off after getting married, having two children, and the normal challenges of work and person life took over. I managed to hang onto the car thru several moves in Southern California and when we moved to San Ramon in 1997. I was finally able to start working on the car seriously in 2010 and finally got it to a stage where it was ready to be painted by John Haugrud in May 2014 and it made sense to with the original Lime Green Metallic paint which turned out beautiful and seems to garner many compliments. I enjoy doing electrical and mechanical jobs and did virtually all the work myself, with the exception of the paint (John Haugrud), engine (Joe s Engine Shop), and transmission (Jerry Tubbs, former brother-in-law). The car has about 51,000 original miles on it and I drive it a couple times a week for my own enjoyment to make sure everything is working and get the bugs out. I plan to keep the car and enter it into shows in the local area including Cars & Coffee at the Blackhawk Auto Museum, Ponies and Snakes, and of course the annual DVMA car show. With this one pretty much all done, I m starting to look for my next project! 4
