Dear Teachers, Competitors and Parents, We would like to thank you for considering entering Metropolitan Festival of Dance. Following is the entry to our festival at which we try to create a happy and friendly environment for all competitors, so they feel comfortable and relaxed while striving to do the best performance they can. Please note changes this year to the entry; we are running all of the troupe sections on the first weekend, Saturday the 29 th and Sunday the 30 th (please note if troupe numbers are too high we may need to run the Friday night 28 th of June as well). This is the first time we have tried this and are hoping it works better for teachers as well as non-solo students who wish to go away etc. Please note we will be having a full canteen with hot meals so that the students can be properly fed and have the energy to get through the long troupe days especially. We have added Lyrical sections. We know parents sometime find it difficult where to put their child s solo so we have given a very simple explanation - our guide lines are Lyrical- dancing predominately to and expressing the Lyrics of the dance, Neo-Classical based in ballet technique to more modern music but not in pointe shoes, Contemporary this is more open to different routines but please no Lyrical or Neo in this sections. Vocal sections have also been added in up-tempo and Ballard. We have also split the Jazz sections into Musical theatre and Commercial Jazz. Musical Theatre will be any jazz solos that are from a musical theatre show, please DO NOT put these in the Commercial Jazz section, the Commercial Jazz sections is all other jazz such as power jazz or music that is currently on the radio etc. Commercial jazz does NOT include HIP HOP. Hip hop is also a section and is now counted in the aggregate points. Parents if you are still a little confused please see your own solo teacher if you are unsure and I am sure they will be able to help you out with this. If sections have insufficient numbers they will be combined at the discretion of the committee. If any sections are combined by age groups the aggregate points will apply to the students own age group. If you feel there are sections we need to add please feel free to email us and we will consider them for next year. Troupes and soloist will no longer be required to come onto stage in costume at the end of each section. We will announce prizes at the end of the section and competitors may come up in front or the curtain to accept prize (2 people from a troupe is acceptable). Special sections will still be awarded onstage. Solos will commence on Monday the 1st of July with that morning and, most likely the afternoon, being dedicated to the VCE and VET Dance sections. All other sections will start on the Monday night or late afternoon. Our finish date is listed at Sunday the 7 th of July but of course will depend on the number of entries received. We do try to keep the younger students on during the morning and afternoon and the older students in the night (after work hours). Timetabling is extremely difficult and making sure all competitors can get there and have their time on stage is our main priority. At MFD we are happy to get feedback from all teachers competitors and parents so please feel free to email us with anything we can look at to improve our festival for future years. Hoping to see you all soon. Best wishes MFD committee
