Nutrition Education Eat Learn Live Assembly! Hurlbutt Elementary School Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd Grade March 3, 2010 Jill Patterson, RD created and presented a nutrition education assembly at Hurlbutt Elementary School. This energetic and interactive assembly incorporated lessons that tie into the Weston Health Curriculum.

Hurlbutt Elementary School Students Visited by Special Guests For National Nutrition Month Hurlbutt Elementary School students attended a special Eat, Learn, Live assembly in honor of National Nutrition Month on Wednesday, March 3rd. This nutrition education program was created by Jill Patterson, RD, Chartwells Resident Dietitian for Weston Public Schools and was coordinated with Kim Kus, Weston s Curriculum Instruction Leader for Physical Education/Health, to incorporate and reinforce Weston s nutrition curriculum. The energetic and interactive assembly included nutrition education, music, exercise, and special guest appearances by Chartwells mascots for healthy living. Weston High School Honors Society student volunteers played the roles of turtle Sydney C. Learn (Rachel Schwartz), lion Theodore Eat (Kenzie Crocker), and rabbit Ava Live (Ginnie Low). Sam Weyrauch, Rebecca Zhu, Julia Roth, and Anja Nickel also participated.

Whole Grains Promotion Did you know that we ran a Whole Grains Promotion in September at Hurlbutt & WIS? o Our foodservice associates wore Just Ask for Whole Grains Buttons. o Students who selected a whole grain with their school lunch meal (or brought one in from home) received a whole grains sticker. Balanced Meal Promotion Did you know that in January 2010, we ran a Balanced Meal Promotion? o Students at Hurlbutt elementary school and Weston Intermediate School received a prize if they build a balanced meal in the school cafeteria. Be a Flexitarian Promotion Did you know that on February 24 th, we featured a Be a Flexitarian Promotion? o A flexitarian is someone who actively incorporates meatless meals into their diet. o We featured special vegetarian dishes in all of the cafeterias, including chickpea salad. o Students at Weston Intermediate School and Hurlbutt Elementary School received an I tried it! sticker if they selected a meatless choice (entrée or side dish). Chef for a Day Contest Did you know that we ran a Chef for a Day Contest at Hurlbutt Elementary School and Weston Intermediate School? o Students created a menu and drawing of their favorite foods that they would like to see on the lunch menu. o Each student who turned in a drawing received a Culinary Kid! pencil. o Grand prize winners received a Chartwells Beanie Doll o Student suggestions were reviewed and incorporated into menu planning for Hurlbutt and WIS. Favorite Whole Grains Drawing Contest Did you know that we coordinated a Favorite Whole Grains Drawing Contest at Hurlbutt & WIS? Grand prize winners received a Chartwells Beanie Creature of Theodore Eat, Sydney C. Learn, or Ava Live, each wearing a Just Ask for Whole Grains button. Each student who turned in a drawing received a Just Ask for Whole Grains button. We had over 50 students turn in Favorite Whole Grain Drawings! Weston Staff Wellness Did you know that on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, Newtown foodservice associates participated in a staff wellness program taught by Resident Dietitian, Jill Patterson, RD? o The program included nutrition tips and tricks for weight management and nutrition myths and facts. o Chartwells pedometers were given to each associate, and they participated in the pedometer challenge by recording their steps each day in January.
