Continental Dance Club August, 2017 Volume 57, Number 8 Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter Hello fellow dancers! It was the right time for a MID- SUMMER BALL and a lot of fun for all. The dance hall was decorated and the food was being prepared as we arrived. The night got started at 7pm and our buffet opened shortly thereafter and might I say the food was excellent. Through the evening, we had a couple of breaks with some wonderful dance exhibitions and short mixers. This dance might have ended too early because when the last song was played I think there were over half of the people still dancing and having fun. I must give a big thank you to Dave and Sue Berard for sharing their 50th wedding anniversary celebration, on July 9 th, along with delicious cake, punch and coffee. This surprise was well-received; both cakes were completely consumed. Thanks again and congratulations. P.S. In keeping with the romantic theme, our musician that night, Dave Lowe, informed us he had just gotten married. We want to wish him all the best. We board members appreciate the favorable comments about the two short breaks. Our goal is for everyone to have a chance to dance, partner or no partner, and for members to get to know each other better. I have been told we are going to do a Sadie Hawkins mixer soon, where ladies ask the gentlemen. Personally, I love it when a lady invites me to dance, and know that most of our other male attendees feel the same. We have just shy of sixty dancers going to the Indiana State Fair this year and it should be a great time. What we want to do is represent our dance club with the hopes of having audience members that might like to dance, join our club and share our Sunday evening fun. The best part is we get to spend the whole day at the fair at no cost, just for doing what we love to do anyway dance! (How cool is that?) I know we re a little ways away from this event, but Sunday, August 27th is the night of our Indiana Roof dance. We have bought a limited number of tickets for seating at our designated tables, so, if you know you are going, get with our salesperson and buy your tickets. Once our members have had a chance to buy their tickets, we can sell the extras to other dancers who have expressed an interest in going. from your President, DAVE Homecoming at the No dance at Starlite page 2

Continental Dance Club August, 2017 Volume 57, Number 8 Dance Instruction August From our Dance Instructor Chairman Ben Davis Xavier Medina will teach us the Hustle - New York and other styles. Xavier founded the Indiana University Ballroom Dance Company and currently teaches dance at Riolo Dance Studio. We can count on him for some fun new dance moves. We thank our last month s professional instructors, Scott and Yula Shook as our professional dance instructors for teaching American Waltz, as well as our member volunteers for teaching our beginner lessons. Please invite your friends to come and learn to dance or to join us in learning some new dance steps. Both beginning and intermediate dance lessons are available only WITH paid admission to the dance. Please, no video recording of the lesson without permission of the instructor. Do you own a business? Consider running an ad in our newsletter or talk to a friend who might be interested in running an ad. Our newsletter reaches more than 300 people and the rates are quite reasonable. Substantial savings in monthly rates can be realized by running an ad for six months or a year. Your ad does not need to be copy ready. We will work with you. Please contact Darrel Trexler: at 317-722-0133 or continentaldanceclub@yahoo.com. page 4

Continental Dance Club August, 2017 Volume 57, Number 8 MY CDC PHILIP DAVIS: A FRAME FOR THE FOLLOWER It s the special nature of the Argentine Tango that forces a man to learn how to lead, asserts longtime dance aficionado and CDC member Philip Davis, whose initial involvement with Continental began long before Starlite Ballroom became the Club s home. Philip recalls an observation instructor Marie Roach shared with him years ago: the Argentine Tango makes for good cross-training, enabling dancers to become more proficient ballroom dancers sooner. Philip himself, a former ice and roller dancer, finds proof of the efficacy of that cross-training concept in the fact that Olympian ice dancers Torvill & Dean spent 50% of their practice time off-ice, doing ballroom and jazz dancing. Philip traces his own preference for lead-and-follow - style couple dancing to those days when his activity was focused on the Argentine Tango and West Coast Swing. Having met his first real dance partner while both were earning MBA s at the Wharton Graduate Division of the University of Pennsylvania, Philip followed her to Indianapolis, where he pursued a career in Business Intelligence and Project Management. And, while the romantic relationship with that female dance muse did not survive, her legacy was to inspire Philip with a love of dancing that is still going strong 30 years later. Becoming a charter member of Heartland, he took individual or group lessons under Marie Roach, Rob Jenkins, Joanna Markley, Chuck Mason, Ron Fields, Maren Oslac, Katy Fineman, Gail Swineheart, and Kristiina Ilo. After thirty years of dancing, Philip has concluded, I m no performance dancer, just an everyman. In fact, he adds, If I were tied to a pattern, I would not be dancing as much as I do; that Argentine Tango training allows me to be a universal leader, adapting my style and enjoying the experience of leading women who have very different types of dance styles. Like film actor Mel Gibson, Philip Davis continues searching for the answer to the question What Do Women Want? (in this case, what female dance partners want). Evidence thus far leads him to believe that, as opposed to fancy steps, it s a consistent, intelligible, and executable lead. Philip Davis sees his role as providing a frame to showcase the follower. - by board member Rhoda Israelov SAVE the DATE/TIME for STATE FAIR DANCING The Continental Dance Club is going to "The Great 2017 Indiana State Fair" on Saturday, August 5th for dancing from 6:00 7:00 PM. The event will include general Ballroom Dancing w/cd's along with some Dance Exhibitions. Complimentary Admission tickets will be issued to Dancers participating on the stage during that time frame. Please contact Ruthann Rudy Osenbaugh, if you would like to sign up to dance that evening. 317-250-4789 or email: r.r@mw.net Thank you to all who attended the ball on July 16 - it appeared to be a success. I especially want to thank those who helped to plan, decorate, and clean up for another wonderful ball. All the assistance was greatly appreciated!
