The Iowa State Fair dates are August 9 19, 2018. 2 MAY 15 Animal Identification Deadline If you plan to show any animal at the County Fair you MUST have these animals identified in 4-H online before Tuesday, May 15 at 11:59 p.m. If you are showing market beef, swine (weighed in), sheep or goats, I have/will enter this information for you at weigh-in. All other animals must be completely identified in 4-H online on your own time. PLEASE do not wait until the last minute to complete this process. Rabbits, poultry and bottle calves/lambs/goats have an extended deadline of July 1 to enter their information in 4-H online. Animal Identification is required for 4-Hers and clover kids! Visit https://iowa.4honline.com to identify your animals before May 15. A help sheet has been attached to this newsletter. Clover Kids have an extended deadline of July 1st! REQUIRED FOR ALL BIRDS Poultry Pullorum-Thyphoid Pullorum Typhoid testing is required for all birds coming to the County Fair. This means, anything with feathers must be tested. All birds planning to attend the County Fair MUST be tested Saturday, June 16 from 9-Noon at the fairgrounds. There will not be another date available, so please plan accordingly. Testing is required regardless of the birds age or where if came from. During testing, birds will receive a wing or leg band which will be used to id the birds in 4-H online by July 1. For those Clover Kids who plan to bring a chicken for the pet show, your bird will also re-quire testing. State Fair 4-H Market Broiler State Fair 4-H market broiler enter deadline is May 1. For more information visit http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/statefair/livestock Rabbit Tattoo On June 16 from 9-Noon at the County Fairground 4-H youth are welcome to bring their rabbits to get a tattoo. Rabbits are required to have a tattoo to be identified/entered to show at the County fair. Animal Science Round-Up Participants Selected Congratulations to the following 4-H ers who were selected to attend Animal Science Round-Up. Name Species Daniel Little Beef Carter McCann Poultry R. Dean Spalding Beef The County Extension Council has agreed to pay half of the registration for these Round-Up participants, reducing their bill from $180 to $90. Congratulations, 4-H ers! 2

3 Iowa 4-H Youth Conference 2018 Every June, almost 900 teenagers converge on the campus of Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet, and community service activities. If you've completed 8th grade, you're eligible to attend. You don't even have to be in 4-H to attend this conference! You will get to experience campus life and meet new people from across the state! You will be having fun while learning by doing, dancing the nights away, and serving the community. You will get to learn new things to take back to your community and school, and in the process you might even discover something new about yourself! There are opportunities for you to share your talents with the rest of the delegation through small group discussion, the Conference Chorus, and a Talent Show! Regular registration for a fee of $180 closes on June 1. County Extension Council will pay $80 for the first 10 youth who sign up. You can also check out financial aid applications, due April 25 to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. To register or for more information visit https://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/iowa4hyouthconference 2018 Quality Assurance Options for Certification Quality Assurance certification is REQUIRED to exhibit livestock at the County Fair & Iowa State Fair for youth grades 4-12 exhibiting in the following departments: Cattle, Sheep, Swine, Poultry, Rabbit, Dairy Cattle, and Goats FSQA Testing Grades 7-12 Format: Written exam, youth has up to three attempts to pass. Certification Good for up to 3 years Cost: Free Date: Testing is available on March 29 and April 10 by appointment ONLY at the Extension Office. Your participation is automatically recorded in 4-H Online. Quality Training MUST be done by JUNE 15 th! 3

4 Swine Information Swine Weigh-in is on April 14 from 9:00-11:00 at the County Fair Grounds. You must be an active 4-Her before weigh-in. We will not activate 4-Hers during weigh-in. Tags are available at the County Extension Office. A BIG thank you to the anonymous donner who is buying the county fair tags for 4-H youth. Please have tags picked up before weigh-in! Swine participants have the option to opt out of weigh-in, however, swine not weighed in will not be eligible for rate of gain or the carcass contest. If you are thinking about showing 4-H swine at the Iowa State Fair, remember there is a different process for ISF eligible hogs. Swine possibly attending the ISF must have a DNA tag (market and breeding.) Tags may be purchased in advance at $8 per tag at the Extension office. All DNA tags and envelopes must be returned to the Extension Office before May 11. Swine attending the county fair and ISF do not need two separate tags, the ISF DNA will work for both. Sheep & Goat Information Sheep/Goat Weigh-in is on May 5 from 9:00-Noon at the County Fair Grounds. If you plan on showing at State Fair or AKSAREBEN you must retinal image/weigh-in from 10-Noon. Retinal imaging cost $5 per head. You must be an active 4-Her before weigh-in. We will not activate 4-Hers during weigh-in. Tags are available at the County Extension Office. Visit www.extension.iastate.edu/clarke to view and print. 4-H Appreciation Day at Living History Farms Living History Farms says Thank You to all the 4-H members and leaders who have participated in the program this past year. Be sure to attend Appreciation Day on Sunday, May 6th from 12:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Members and leaders who wear their 4-H shirt will get free admission this day. Families are welcome to go up on their own. Get creative and make it a 4-H club event or team building opportunity. This is a great event to explore Iowa s rich history! 4

The size you have entered in 4-H online is the size you will receive for County and State Fair. Join us for MAIZE! The Maize Retreat begins at the Iowa State University campus at 9AM on Friday, April 13, then moves to the Clover Woods Camping Center near Madrid, IA for Friday evening through 12:00 noon on Sunday. Youth in grades 8-12, join us for a weekend of cultural celebration of Latino and Native American heritage, learning and leadership experiences, and fun. 6 Sheep & Goat Project Workshops Each year Darwin Downing offer outstanding opportunities to 4-Hers who have an interest in sheep and goats. Participants learn proper techniques and daily care, showing skills, washing, trimming and much more! These workshops are available to all K-12 grade 4-Hers and is a great opportunity for the beginners and advanced. APRIL 12 JUNE MAY 10 30 Bring your work clothes! You will be building projects. In years past they have built feeders, gates, and small show boxes. AUG JUNE 8:30 AM 2 Bring your sheep/goats! Learn how to shear, wash, trim feet, and trim for shows.
