We have some awesome youth who had amazing static and livestock exhibits! Also, a shout out to all the wonderful adult volunteers who helped make the fair Mighty! Each one of you, youth and adults, make me proud to be a part of the Howard county community! I want to thank you all for your cooperation and help learning the ins and outs of the Mighty Howard County Fair with it being my first Howard County Fair! Although the Mighty Howard County Fair has wrapped up, the summer continues to fly by! The summer has been filled with many events at the county, regional, and state level. Keep in mind, many of these opportunities happen on a yearly basis so if you had a blast or missed out, spread the word among your friends and sign up next year! There is one more adventure before school begins and that is the Iowa State Fair! We have some outstanding static, communication, and livestock projects heading down to Des Moines. If you plan on attending, make sure to take a look at all the hard work our youth are continuing to put in beyond the local level! Good luck to all the 4-Hers in their travels and exhibition at the Iowa State Fair! We are fast approaching record book and recognition season! I highly encourage you to start now and finish before school starts. Records are DUE September 4. If you need assistance, give me a call! SUCCESS AT MIGHTY HOWARD COUNTY FAIR 4-H Building Booth Decorating Awards All the booths looked great this year! I loved to see the creativity and twist the 4- H ers placed on the theme! Congratulations to the following clubs: Diligent 4-H ers, 1 st Place Flying Hoofs, 2 nd Place Timberland Targeting, 3 rd Place 4-H Silent Auction! Thank you to all the clubs and committees who donated items to the annual Silent Auction held at the Howard County Fair. This year s auction was a successful one! A total of $1942 was raised! Thanks to all of the supporters! Livestock Barn Prize Winners Great job to all clubs as they worked towards excellent herdsmanship this year. Congratulations to the following Barn Prize winners: Beef Timberland Targeting Dairy Timberland Targeting Horse Timberland Targeting Poultry Diligent 4-H ers Rabbit Cresco Merrymakers Sheep Space Age Farmers Swine Afton Aces Overall Winner Timberland Targeting Livestock Best Dressed Rabbit Each year the 4-H and FFA Rabbit Show participants are able to enter the Best Dressed Rabbit class. Each participant dresses their rabbit up in their favorite costume and a picture is taken. The pictures are displayed in the rabbit barn during the fair and fairgoers vote on their favorite Best Dressed Rabbit! Congratulations to Topher Bigalk and his rabbit for winning the 2015 Best Dressed Rabbit! Congratulations Topher! COUNTY NEWS Borlaug Intern Update Many of you, including all of us at the Extension, were able to get to know the Borlaug Intern Megan Rauen very well over the last few months. Her time as the intern has come to an end and we would like to extend a huge THANK YOU and GOOD LUCK to her on her future endeavors! Record Book Time! Reminder record books are DUE Friday, September 4 in order to be eligible for awards! There are lots of awards available in addition to completion awards! Need Help With Your Record Book Never done a record book before? Want assistance putting your record book together? Please call the Extension Office at (563) 547-3001 and set up an appointment! The following dates are available for appointments: August 17-21 and August 27-28. LEADER S CORNER WHAT S DUE? Record books are DUE Friday, September 4 th. Please remind your club members to submit their books for awards. There are many awards available in addition to the completion awards! Club Award Forms are DUE Friday, September 4 th. Please remember to have your club submit applicants for 2015 Meritorious, Honorary and Alumni Awards. This is a great time to recognize those volunteers that put in countless hours and passion to support the Howard County 4-H program. Club Program Books & Financial Report are DUE Friday, October 2 nd Citizenship Year 1 On the Horizon Our regional Citizenship program is about to get under way for the 2015-2016 year. The Citizenship group is open to any youth from 7 th 11 th grade. It is a two year commitment that covers local and state government in year one and moves up to federal government in year two. This year will end with a trip to the Iowa State Capital! In year two, you will end with a 5-day trip to our nation s capital! Know someone not a 4 -Her but would be interested in joining? Bring them in and we will sign them up for both. If you would like to join the group or want more information, please contact Erica at the Extension or via email ehollida@iastate.edu. Re-enrollment on 4H Online Beginning September 15 th Howard County 4-H ers will be able to reenroll for the upcoming year. Please go to https:// iowa.4honline.com/ to sign-in and complete the process for re-enrollment after September 1 st. You have until November 30 th to complete or risk losing the assistance for your annual fee. If you need help enrolling online or would like to apply for membership dues assistance please contact the Extension Office! Your dedication to the Howard County 4-H program contributed to the success of these programs. Once again, THANK YOU for all your hard work! NEXT MEETING Our next meeting will be held in junction with the Regional on Sunday, August 30 from 12:45 P.M. 6:00 P.M. in Postville at the Postville YMCA! You will be receiving your registration in the mail and is DUE Saturday, August 15 to the Extension Office.
