Woonona Surf Life Saving Club Illawarra Club of the Year 2009, 2012, 2013 & 2015 NSW Club of the Year 2013 Illawarra Patrolling Club of the Year 2009, 2013 & 2014 Illawarra Volunteer of the Year 2015 PRESIDENT On behalf of Woonona SLSC I would like to wish all members a very Merry Christmas. As we move into the holiday season, I urge you to take extra care on the beach. I ask that you always set an example to the many visitors on our beach, be alert, and always encourage everyone to swim between the red and yellow flags. Don t forget your own sun protection. and slip, slop, slap! Thankyou to everyone who helped with the Sydney Water Carnival held at Woonona Beach on the 26th November. It was a great team effort, with all our members working together from rookies, patrolling members, nipper parents and life members, and thankyou to everyone who contributed to our baked goods stall, it was a big hit and added greatly to the amount raised. Thankyou also to Outback Steakhouse for sponsoring the day, Outback donated the food and helped cooked the BBQ for the carnival. Due to their sponsorship we were able to raise significant amount from the BBQ. SO if you're heading out for dinner anytime soon, head to Outback Steakhouse and please drop that you're from Woonona SLSC (Crucial!). The more they see we're supporting them, the more we will get in return in the future Thank-you to all patrolling members for your continued vigilance and service over this busy festive season..and all the very best to everyone for the year ahead. DIRECTOR OF LIFESAVING Welcome to Summer Holidays! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!! This is our busy period with higher beach attendance and more frequent patrols. Please make sure you know when you re rostered to patrol and get down there. All Christmas and New Year s sub should now be sorted, make sure you ve let you patrol captain know. If you get stuck and REALLY can t find someone to cover you call Rach. NB if you agree to fill in for someone and then fail to complete the arranged sub you are in default, not them. Proficiencies all patrolling members Thank you to everyone who has completed their proficiencies! There are still people who haven t competed their proficiency the last proficiency is this Sunday December 18th at 11.30am. This will be the last opportunity and we really NEED YOU to help us keep the beach safe this season. If you are unable to attend this session please call Kieran today on 0429728879 to organise. Welcome to all our new Patrollers! Our Bronze / SRC squad completed their awards, it s great to welcome some new faces to the Patrolling family. Please make them welcome, we all benefit when we share our knowledge and experience, often the best ideas are seen through new eyes so don t be shy. Lastly, I encourage all Lifesavers to get in the water, go for a swim or board and practice your skills. Make sure you check with your Patrol Captain first, but it s great to see our lifesavers out their honing their skills and using the equipment as it is supposed to be, enjoy! Rach Club Champs Each year Woonona's members battle it out for the title of the club champion. The multidisciplinary point score involves weekend rounds of boards, swim, sprint and flags to decide who will hold the trophy come presentation time. There are still two rounds to go so set your calendars for the following dates: Sun 29th January 2:30pm - ties in with start of nippers Sun 5th February 10am Start training and see you on the beach! FACILITY MANAGER Hello everyone, and a very Merry Christmas to you all. Many of you will not know me, as I am a new club member, who has taken on the role of managing the Club House and associated buildings. We have had a productive year so far, which is quite good considering the season has only just started. The Club house has had some major work carried out on the eastern wall to replace the concrete Pillars, and the Roller Doors. We have replaced the Club Computer with a new one, thanks to Anthony Arnold, the computer is now working with the Security system, so hopefully we will have no more access issues. We have purchased and installed a new Stainless Steel BBQ, to replace the older unserviceable unit. It has seen action at the past few Nipper days and appears to be working well. Thanks to the generosity of Aussie Broadband, we now have a full internet and phone service at the club, to solve those annoying internet issues on registration days and to facilitate online learning on training days. I would like to acknowledge a few people who have helped the club in the past few months to achieve the above mentioned services. Peter Rigby has supplied numerous hours in preparing several computers to finally get a working club computer. Peter has re programmed these computers and spent some time at the club getting them to work with the security system. Peter also assisted in fitting the new BBQ. Dave Hill who has donated time, tools and materials to create a door way into the old Gym, now the nipper room, and to assist in the fitting of the new BBQ. Also a big shout out to Aussie Broadband, who have supplied the NBN phone and internet service to the club. All infrastructure and costs being carried by them. So if you are thinking of getting an internet service or moving to a new ISP, give Aussie Broadband a call, and mention that you are a club member and mention their wonderful contribution to our club. I know that you are all proud of your club house and would like to see our club as the stand out club in the area, so to that end I have some big plans for the new year. 1. A new personal access door on the eastern wall. 2. New ceiling fans in the club house 3. Air conditioning for the club house 4. Replacement of the northern roller door 5. A new stainless steel protective cage around the fresh water tank. 6. Renovating the ground floor ladies toilets and showers. 7. Tinting of all the eastern windows of the club house. Wishing everyone a very merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. Steve Goding To get your story in the next issue of black & white, email vanessamc1964@yahoo.com.au Page 5

RIDING THE WAVES PROGRAM This last Sunday marked the last day of the first block of the Riding the Waves program for kids with disabilities and boy, has it been an experience! The ten kids and their volunteers have taken on every activity I could throw at them and turned around and asked for more. Together, we ve figured out how to do flags, conquered the pool, and are tackling the waves now though some of us are more worried about messing up our hair then being wiped out! We will return next year for another four weeks of the program, over five weeks, from the afternoon of the 29th of January. Anyone who can provide even a week of help is desperately needed, and will have a ball helping out. I know I have! Please contact me at brimc979@gmail.com if you can help. My deepest thanks to everyone who helped this year and I ll see you all next year! BRIANNA MCINALLY HALL HIRE If you re interested please check the website for details or contact Troy Johnson by phone on 0411 969 656 or by email troy.johnson@raywhite.com.au. Clothing We now have Club uniforms available through Denise Salm of South Coast Uniforms. There are a wide range of items available and a price list and order from can be located on the Woonona SLSC website - http://woononaslsc.com.au/nippers/uniforms. Thank you from the Registrar Thank you to all of our wonderful, new member Nippers, parents and renewing members of the 2016 season, with your patience and good humour we were able to register and update everyone! As this is a special time of the year, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and the very best for a safe and happy New Year. Surf Club Summer Blood Drive It s that time of year again. The weather s warmer and the whole of the Illawarra heads down to the beach where our members are on duty, keeping the public safe. But you don t have to be on duty to save lives this summer. You can sit back, relax and save three lives in just one hour by being part of the Illawarra Surf Club Summer Blood Drive between Thursday 1 December, 2016 and Tuesday 28 February, 2017. See attached flyer. Your blood donation can help cancer patients, mums and babies, and people undergoing surgery. To save even more lives this summer, simply: 1. Register to our Club s Red25 blood donation group. 2. Check if you re eligible to donate 3. Make an appointment to give blood at your nearest donor centre. Looking forward to saving lives together this summer, both on and off the beach! Warm regards, Stacey To get your story in the next issue of black & white, email vanessamc1964@yahoo.com.au Page 7
