The President s Ponderings Welcome to the new season and our first newsletter. For those that might not have been around the club for the past couple of months and have not heard the Club has a new management committee led by ME. So you know who is whom the following members make up the committee; President Rod Leach Vice President Michael Wilson Secretary Ryan Lee Treasurer Brett Read Club Captain Rod Finney JAC Chairman Michal Blair Chief Training Officer Stan Ridland Marketing officer Brad Jackson Gear & Equipment Peter Marshall All of those above will be doing their best to make sure the Club prospers, succeeds and grows back into the premier club in the Branch (and Queensland Country). A lot of the work that is done by the committee is done behind the scenes so if you don t see them around much, though just about all of them are patrol captains, they will still be working their little butts off to make sure the Club runs smoothly. Membership, along with the Club s finances is our main priority at this early stage of the season. We need more patrolling members to ensure that firstly we don t burn out our existing members by having them continually rostered to patrols and also to ensure that we can confidently provide the highest quality lifesaving services to the bathing public of Mackay. There are financial incentives for existing members who introduce a new member to the Club. If you know of anyone who you think might be interested in joining bring them down to the Club and we will do our best to encourage them to take the next step and join up. The Club s finances are also not looking good so until we can stabilise the downward trend of more money going out than is coming in we will not be undertaking any unnecessary spending. To give you examples of where our funds go the Club averages between $150 and $200 a month for water and about $650 a month for electricity or around $10,000 a year for two essential services. Obviously, there are other outgoings such as insurances on the building and gear and equipment and also on our members, council rates, and the list goes on. Our main source of income comes from membership fees, state government subsidies and fund raising, especially by our surf girl and also assisting with community events. As a committee, we will be asking you, at some stage during the season, to help out with some of our fund raising events, please don t find an excuse not to help. Everything that we get involved with in the community is done to promote and help the Club move forward and be successful and to be blunt, if you don t want to put your hand up to help when asked then don t ask for something from the Club that we probably can t afford or don t see as a high priority. I look forward to seeing you all around the Club and doing your bit to make the Club a better place to be around. Our newsletter will be a regular fixture and if you want to put something in it please contact either Ryan Lee or Jocelyn in the office and they will make sure it gets in the next publication. OUR SURF GIRL Deborah Keioskie is this year s Summer Surf Girl entrant state wide. She will be representing the Mackay Surf lifesaving club. Her primary objective is to promote surf lifesaving in our community and bring awareness about what lifesaving is all about and increase membership. She will also be running events throughout the year to fundraise for our local club, the person with the most money raised wins prizes but all money does come back to our local club. In May 2018 she will be in the Gold Coast competing against other surf girls (approx. 12) in lifesaving simulations, first aid, promotional speeches and parades. So far she has had a golf day, a game 3 state of origin night and helped doing first aide at a Dalrymple Bay family day, Big Boys Toys, talks at kindergartens and this coming beach horse races. The next big event is the Kids Spring break market and promotion day Sept 17th after our nippers morning. IN THE COMMUNITY Surf Safe Appeal 23rd to 29th October Duck Raffle Stan is looking for volunteers to sell tickets, keep watching our Facebook page and help out where you can.
