Clover Kids may exhibit items in the Exhibit Hall, they can bring up to 5 exhibits. Exhibits will be judged on Saturday, July 11 at 2:00 PM in the Exhibit Hall (large building near Free Stage). Clover Kids may bring exhibits similar to 4-H ers, but may not use kits. For example, a Clover Kids member may bring a picture frame made out of craft sticks, a matter photo they have taken this year, chocolate chip cookies, or a birdhouse. They may not bring items from a purchased craft kit, like those at Walmart or Michaels. All Exhibit Hall exhibits will stay on display in the Exhibit Hall until 10:30 AM on Sunday, July 19. Exhibits must be picked up by 1:00 PM on Sunday or between 10:00 AM-Noon on Monday, July 20. Clover Kids bringing pets for the Pet Show will check in by 4:00 PM in the Pavilion on Saturday, July 18. Copyright & Alcohol Exhibit Information As fair approaches, the copyright/trademark use becomes a big issue. A sample letter is available at the Extension office and on our website. DO NOT copy anything unless you have permission. If you purchase a pattern or magazine that is used for an exhibit, then you have purchased the right to use the items. You need to get permission for everything else. Always remember to site your sources! Example: Tracing and shading a copy of Mickey Mouse or Creating a collage of name brand images. Be sure to get approval PRIOR to using these items in a 4-H exhibit. Also, please remember that NO alcohol images or items may be used with a 4-H exhibit. Example: Wine bottle lamps, beer bottle cap bracelets, beer breads, etc. 4-H members are not old enough to purchase alcohol, therefore, they are not able to use items related to alcohol. Bucket o Junk Judging & Auction We have received some pretty amazing Bucket o Junk exhibits! These exhibits will be judged near the FFA Building on Monday, July 13 at around 3:30 PM (following Ag Gadget Judging). All Bucket o Junk participants must be present for judging. The Bucket o Junk exhibits will be auctioned off following the Chamber BBQ on Thursday, July 16 (approx. 6:45 PM) in the Pavilion, members must be present for the auction as well. All proceeds from the auction will go into the 2016 Southern Iowa Fair Youth Shows Fund to cover 4-H & FFA premiums. FSQA Food Safety & Quality Assurance If you missed FSQA training or testing this year, you will not be permitted to exhibit at the Southern Iowa Fair in the areas of beef, sheep, swine, meat goat, dairy goat, dairy cattle, or rabbit. Bucket/Bottle animals, dogs, horses, llamas, and pets are not included in this requirement. We notified families in June if they needed FSQA. You can find your FSQA record by logging into 4hOnline. 4

Stall Assignment Meeting & Fair Clean-Up Superintendent Stall Assignment Meeting Tuesday, July 7 7:00 PM DAV Building at Fairgrounds Time will be available to work in the barns after this meeting. Fair Clean-Up Thursday, July 9 5:00-7:00 PM Exhibit Hall & Barns Teen Council will be working to set up display booths, club members may feel free to attend and help out. Please see the article below for more details about setting up club booths. Stall Assignment Posting Friday, July 10 NOON in Barns Stall Assignments will be posted at NOON, not earlier and not later. After assignments have been posted you may reserve your stall/cage and begin putting bedding in at your club s appropriate location on the stall assignment map. Exhibit Hall Booth Set-up July 9th We have noticed that many clubs move the exhibit booths to decorate after the Teen Council members set them up in the Exhibit Hall. To prevent damage to the club booths and remove risks for falling after climbing on booths, we have decided to have clubs come in between 5-7 PM to set up their own booths (with Teen Council assistance) and begin decorating. Clubs that have any decorations that will be hung from the ceiling or wall behind the booth must be put up before the booth is put in place. We do not want any of the booths to be moved or climbed on after they are in place. The booth spaces will be on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED basis this year. We will not have pre-registration or assigned booths in the Exhibit Hall this year. We will also move the Hort Booths and Photo stands in the 4-H Building on this night. Some superintendents will be available in the barns to begin working on repairs, setting up pens, cleaning, etc. We will continue to have the L shaped booths this year. Clubs needing extra shelving or more space should plan to be at the set-up by 5 PM. 5

This does not include Horticulture exhibits, which will be judged on Monday, July 13. Mahaska County Fair Help Me Guide A Help Me Guide for the county fair is now available at the Extension office and online at http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/mahaska/sites/ www.extension.iastate.edu/files/mahaska/helpguide2015.pdf. This guide will help you to learn more about preparing for and exhibiting at the county fair. It is a helpful guide for new families. 4-H Project Tip Sheets Tip Sheets have been created by Iowa 4-H to help 4-H ers as they prepare their exhibits for the fair. The tip sheets give 4-H ers an idea of what the 4-H judges use when judging fair exhibits. These sheets are very helpful in deciding what to visit with the judge about and preparing goal cards. You can find the Tip Sheets at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/ exhibit-tip-sheets. Helpful Resources If you haven t already done so, please Like our 4-H Facebook page at www.facebook.com/mahaska4h. If you do not have a Facebook account, you can still access our posts at the site above. If you are not receiving our emails, please check 4hOnline to make sure your email is current in your Family Account. Your 4-H Leaders and 4-H Superintendents are valuable resources, especially as we approach the fair. 7

Please note that the 4-H office will only be open until 4:30 PM each day, plan accordingly. SWINE exhibitors DO NOT need numbers. County Fair Livestock Information Iowa State Fair rules for preparing exhibition and exhibiting apply at the Southern Iowa Fair. Substitute showmen must be preapproved by the Superintendent and 4-H Staff Show Official. Substitute showmen will only be permitted if sickness or injury prevents original exhibitor from exhibiting. Staff may request a doctor s note. No parents will be permitted to enter the show ring for any livestock show. If assistance is needed for a child, please contact a 4-H Superintendent prior to the show. If anyone removes a member s animals before the specified release time, said member will lose all premiums and awards and will not be permitted to exhibit any livestock the following year (the same applies to non-livestock exhibits in the exhibit buildings). Animals being exhibited in one division or show may not also take part in a different show; ex: Bottle Lambs being exhibited as a bottle lamb and then being exhibited in the sheep show, that is not permitted. Any animals sold after the county fair are no longer a 4-H project, those members may no longer exhibit that animal in a 4-H show at the county, state, or interstate level in 2015. Please read ALL of the signs posted at the fair for full, updated information. 8

We will have divisions for 4th-6th graders, 7th-9th graders, 10th-12th graders, and Adults (18+, not in 4-H or FFA). Different tasks will need to be performed by the teams and the top overall teams will be awarded some fun prizes. This is open to all, not just 4-H & FFA members and families. Teams must consist of 3 members in the appropriate division. You cannot have a 10th grader on a team with two 4th graders. Teams can begin registering in the 4-H office on the first day of the fair. A signup sheet will be on the counter in the 4-H office. Ag Olympic Games will be held on Thursday, July 16 following the Chamber BBQ (approx. 7:30 PM). We will start with the youngest divisions and move up to the adult division. 13

Design Element & Art Principle Requirements 4-H ers are required to include explanations of Design Elements or Art Principles if they will exhibit Sewing, Visual Arts, or Home Improvement exhibits at the fair. Please note that the new 4-H fair rules do not state that this is a requirement within the class descriptions as they have in the past. This was a typographical error and the explanations are still required. Help Sheets for Design Elements & Art Principles can be found at the Extension office and on our website. The judges at the fair do not want to see, The element I used was color. Instead, the judges want to see how the element was specifically used. Explain in your goal card about the specifics of the element or principle. For example, I like how the eyes are drawn to the mix of colors on this quilt. Each color relates to the other and causes your eyes to travel around the entire quilt. Design Elements are: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, & Space Art Principles are: Rhythm, Proportion, Emphasis, & Balance The following exhibit areas require explanation of Design Elements/Art Principles: Home Improvement, Sewing & Needle Arts, & Visual Arts The following are requirements for these exhibit classes for exhibitors who have completed: 4th-6th grade -minimum of 1 element of design 7th-8th grade - minimum of 2 elements of design 9th-10th grade - minimum of 1 art principle 11th-12th grade - minimum of 2 art principles You can also find some good information at, http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/4hfiles/statefair/eehandbook/ EEHJPDesign4H634.pdf.
