Page 2 DANCENTER DISPATCH Spotlight on: Catherine Rayhill Catherine Rayhill, who dances at the Dancenter and performs in many plays and musicals in New Hartford, shares some of her thoughts on Theater, Acting and Dancing. How old are you, and how long have you been doing theater? I'm 13 and I've been acting for 6 nearing 7 years. Where do you do theater? I usually am in a summer play put on by The Town of New Hartford's Summer Theater program, and I also am in my school's musicals. What was the last show you were in? I was just in The Little Mermaid Junior put on at my school. I was a Jellyfish and a Flamingo, but my main role was Chef Louis. In the Musical I had to sing a solo song called Les Poissons, as well as the numerous chorus pieces, and I also danced. What is your next show going to be? I have no idea, it will probably be the next Summer Theater play, unless I find something else that is sooner that I want to do. How long have you been dancing? I have been dancing for about nine years. What is your favorite style of dance? I don't really know, I can't pick a favorite! How do you think dancing with the Dancenter has helped you with performing in the theater? Dancing at Dancenter has helped my acting skills, mostly through body language. Dance has given me different ways to portray different types of emotions from using simple hand, legs, and posture positions. Not being aware of your body in acting will make the actor look odd, you can t portray a character as polite, precise, and wellmannered if you are slouching. INTERVIEWER: HANNAH GOERNER INTERVIEWEE: CATHERINE RAYHILL 2013 Competition Schedule We re working hard at the Dancenter to prepare for the upcoming competitions in April and May of 2013. The competition schedule for 2013 has been announced! Both competition performances will be in Rome, NY. The first takes place on the 27th to the 28th of April, the second on the 10th to the 11th of May. Check out our competition Schedule online at Dancenterstudio.com for more information. Hurricane Sandy! Dancenter closed for the first time in our 13 years of dance history for a hurricane warning. Weather tracking sites predicted that New Hartford/Utica was in for a rough couple of days thanks to Hurricane Sandy. Fortunately this was a false alarm, as our area of central New York was not hit as hard as certain other cities, especially New York City. Hopefully everyone enjoyed their night off and did not experience any power outages!

VOLUME 3 Page 3 Master Class Megan Ruffalo, Alexa Battista and Emma Mazloom of the Dancenter took a master class at a dance convention with renowned dancers Gio from Americas Beat Dance Crew and Left to right: Emma Mazloom and Alexa Battista This was an incredible opportunity to learn from two well-known, renowned current dancers. The cost is $5 per person. Bring a snack and a comfy pillow, and be ready for a fun movie night! First Position is a Documentary following six incredibly talented Nutcracker! young dancers as they compete in the Youth Grand Prix. First Position received a rating of 99% on the Film Review Site Rotten Tomatoes. This documentary is sure to be inspir- ing to many young ballet dancers. Again, this film shows on Friday, November 30th at 8pm at the Dancenter. Bring your family and friends! Nutcracker season is coming up soon! With only a few weeks to go until December 9th, dancers are working hard to perfect this classic Christmas story. To put on a show every year, the Leatherstocking Ballet needs the help of every one of its members to raise money for the production. There was a fundraiser on Friday, November 9th at Barnes and Noble, and a bottle and can drive on Sunday, November 11th at Chanatry s. They are also selling ads to put in the Nutcracker program, and could use some more help with these. If you are performing with the Leatherstocking Ballet, please check and see how you can help raise money so that we can have a wonderful show! The Leatherstocking Ballet s The Nutcracker will take place on Sunday, November 9th at MVCC.
