Hunting News 1 2018 Campaign Preview HTML Source Plain-Text Email Details Hunting News 1-2018 Hello to all of our friends! We hope that you have been having a blessed and prosperous year so far! We have kicked off our hunting season with a bang and are very excited to share some of the first hunting reports of the season with you! We are really looking forward to welcoming all of our hunters for this year, next year and beyond! https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 1/15
Photo of the Month: This beautiful shot showcases a majestic kudu walking off into the bushveld (Courtesy of Alison McMahon) Jon and Alison McMahon We were very excited to welcome Jon McMahon, a good buddy of our old client and friend Dr Lance Barton, to Africa for a great hunt. Jon is an outfitter from Canada, running Great White Holdings, where they hunt monster whitetail and mule deer, waterfowl, giant black bears and predatory K9 s. We were really happy to welcome his wife, Alison, a few days later to join us on the exciting hunt! Jon and Alison after an exhilarating day of hunting! Jon was kind enough to send us a great report of his hunt... "After a rainy night in the Kalahari, we were onto several sets of fresh lion tracks early in the morning. We had a quick visual on the big cat just as we started tracking and from there it was several hours on the tracks before we were face to face again and for the final time. The final scene had the lion starring us down, perched in a large tree. We shuffled into a clear shooting position and shot at about 40 yards with the 416. A few more well placed shots and it was all over. This was an experience I will never forget to say the least: the first animal I took in Africa A tremendous trophy for me " https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 2/15
the first animal I took in Africa. A tremendous trophy for me. "A big sable bull was the main goal when I booked my hunt originally. After a few close encounters with the same bull a day earlier, we were in the right place at the right time and had the animal heading directly at us at a distance of about 100 yards. One shot with the 300 H&H dropped the bull. I could not have been happier with this beautiful animal." https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 3/15
"I had been hopeful to get a shot at a warthog if the opportunity arose. As we approached a waterhole in the Limpopo hunting area before dark, three pigs spooked and headed towards the brush. There was a quick opportunity at a shot once I was given the word from Andre. Again the 300 H&H did the job. A great old boar." "I had the opportunity to do some night hunting in the farm land for the last part of our trip. It was a great experience in some beautiful looking country. Took several nice Jackals, cape fox, wild cat, porcupine and steenbok." https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 4/15

To Jon and Alison: Thank you for choosing Somerby Safaris to host you on your first African hunt. You are truly a great hunter and it was a privilege to share this experience with you! Hal Kirk takes his Springbuck Slam We welcomed our friend Hal Kirk back to South Africa with big smiles at the beginning of April. Hal was on a mission to get his springbuck grand slam and he did a great job of doing exactly that, and more! He also added a black wildebeest, a mountain reedbuck and a super steenbuck to take home to his trophy room! Hal sampled some of his springbuck one night after the hunt - delicious! https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 6/15
The main objective of the hunt was to collect his entire springbuck slam and Hal did just that! The collection includes a common, white, black, copper and Kalahari springbuck. Hal took down his springbucks with his 243, with shots ranging between 80 and 373 yards. Hal took down a great black wildebeest with his 243 Ackley Improved, at a distance of 375 yards. https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 7/15
Hal added a mountain reedbuck to his list, along with a steenbuck. The mountain reedbuck was shot at 150 yards with the 223, and the steenbok at 120 yards, also with the 223. As many of our hunters like to do, Hal and his PH did some bird hunting after harvesting all of Hal's desired animals. Wing shooting is always a blast and they had some great fun! https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 8/15
Thank you so much for coming to hunt with us again, Hal! Congratulations on your beautiful springbuck slam and the other trophies that you took. We hope to see you again soon! Terry Smith's Cull Hunt We have known Terry for many years and we were very happy to welcome him back to South Africa for a great management and trophy hunt. Terry shot some great animals and we had a great time hunting with him again! The first animal that Terry shot was a really nice red hartebeest, at about 150 yards, with his 300 rifle. https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 9/15
Terry next took down a black wildebeest at about 330 yards, also with his 300. Terry shot a blesbuck at around 250 yards off of shooting sticks and an eland at 380 yards. Terry also took down a blue wildebeest. https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 10/15
Terry also shot a bunch of cull springbuck, warthogs, blesbuck, impala and grey duikers. Thank you for joining us on safari again Terry! We had a great time with you, as always. Well done on your great cull hunt and trophies. Please come visit again soon! Somerby for Schools Due to a combined donation from a new hunter that we are looking forward to seeing soon, Paul Ochadlick, and our old friend Mike Graff, we were able to purchase some sweatshirts and trainers for a local orphanage in dire need of these items. We had some hunters, Harold and Patti Smith, over when we went to hand out the clothes and they decided to chip in and buy some candy for the children, just for that cherry on top! https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 11/15
The smiles on the kids' faces were priceless, as were the tears shed by the lady who runs the orphanage and looks after the children. https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 12/15
Another incredibly touching moment during this outing was presenting the orphanage with two very special soccer balls that had been donated by our client and friend John Bugden, in loving memory of Robert Colson and Gerrald Boyd. We presented the soccer balls to the orphanage as a whole, but it was very inspiring to hear the story of the oldest boy at the orphanage. The young man holding the ball in the picture below is 16 year old Teboho Thantsi. Teboho is an avid sportsman, and is playing rugby for the Griffons. The Northern Free State Griffons are a South African rugby union team that participates in the annual Currie Cup and Rugby Challenge tournaments. Teboho enjoys playing soccer and has a really bright future ahead of him, despite the hardships in his life! To all of our donors, we would like to extend a very big thank you! Your generous donations and kind hearts make such a big difference in the lives of these children. A sweatshirt or pair of trainers may be something small for us (that we take for https://us11.admin.mailchimp.com/campaigns/show?id=1444685 14/15
A sweatshirt or pair of trainers may be something small for us (that we take for granted!), but it means warmth and comfort for the Winter for these kids!
