The Cardinals have already clinched the MAC West and No. 2 seed for the upcoming MAC Tournament. Ball State is 5-5 in non-conference road games, which includes a win at #6 LSU on March 11. 1B Caleb Stayton leads the team with 11 RBIs in those games while 3B Sean Kennedy has a team-best three home runs. 8Series History: Ball State has won seven of the last eight meetings against Northern Illinois and holds a 47-32-1 lead in the alltime series that dates back to 1971. SS Alex Maloney hit.385 (5-of-13) in last year s series with three doubles and two runs scored. RHP BJ Butler struck out a career-best nine batters in the 7-4 win over the Huskies on May 15, 2015. 8How the West Was Won: Ball State clinched its second MAC West Division title in the last three years thanks to an 8-7 win at Toledo on Sunday. The Cardinals won six of their eight series against league opponents. Ball State averaged 8.2 runs per game in conference action while ranking first in batting average (.309), OBP (.418) and slugging (.504). 8Call and Stayton Putting Up Impressive Stats: RF Alex Call ranks second nationally in both doubles (23) and runs scored (65) while ranking third in total bases (147). Meanwhile, 1B Caleb Stayton is ranked second nationally in RBIs (70). 8Closing the Door: Ball State is 31-0 this season when tied or leading after seven innings. RHP BJ Butler has been particularly effective as he has made 13 consecutive relief appearances without allowing a run. Butler has five wins and four saves in that stretch. Two weekends ago against Eastern Michigan, Butler pitched two innings to earn the save in the 10-7 win on May 6 and then pitched the final five innings on May 8 to record the win in the 8-3 triumph. 8Stayton Closing in on Record: 1B Caleb Stayton needs six more RBIs to tie Ball State s single-season record set by Brad Miller in 2006 (76). The junior has 18 multi- RBI games this spring and has recorded at least five RBIs three times. On Tuesday, Stayton hit his second grand slam of the season in the 7-4 win at Butler. 8Call Chasing a Record As Well: RF Alex Call has a shot to reach Ball State s singleseason record for doubles (25) set by Kolbrin Vitek in 2009. Call currently sits with 23 doubles, but has not tallied a double in six straight games. HC Rich Maloney Rich Maloney, head coach at Ball State, won his 700th game as a collegiate head coach in 2015. He is in his second head coaching stint at BSU, originally serving from 1996-2002 and returning in 2013. He has led Ball State to four MAC titles as well as its only two 40-win seasons in program history (1997, 1999). In 2014, Maloney led Ball State to the MAC regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014). A year later, the Cardinals made a late season surge and reached the 2015 MAC Tournament championship game. From 2003-12, Maloney was the head coach at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines to three Big Ten conference titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney has mentored 57 players who have been drafted, including five first round selections. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No. 1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history. Maloney was an All-American collegiate baseball player at Western Michigan and spent six seasons playing in the Atlanta Braves organization. He is currently serving as the ABCA second vice president. In the series opener at Buffalo, Baisa piled up three stolen bases, the most by a Ball State player since CF Matt Eppers swiped three bases versus Maine on March 3, 2015. He also scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning in the 4-2 win over the Bulls. 8Congratulations Graduates!: RF Alex Call and INF Ryan Spaulding earned their bachelor s degree this spring. Call majored in entrepreneurial management while Spaulding majored in finance. 8Two for Call: RF Alex Call hit home runs in back-to-back innings in Ball State s 13-1 win over Northern Kentucky on April 26. Call finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs scored. He became the second Cardinal to hit two home runs in a game in 2016. C Jarett Rindfleisch accomplished the feat on March 11 in a 7-1 win at LSU. Call went on to hit two home runs again on May 7 versus Eastern Michigan. 8Speaking of Home Runs: The Cardinals are 19-5 in games this season when hitting a home run. RF Alex Call (12), 1B Caleb Stayton (10) and C Jarett Rindfleisch (seven) are the team leaders in that category. 8MAC West Pitcher of the Week: RHP BJ Butler became the ninth Cardinal to earn MAC West Player or Pitcher of the Week honors on April 28. Butler ranks second in the MAC with nine saves. 8Making a Splash in the Majors: After 751 minor league games, former Ball State OF Jeremy Hazelbaker made his MLB debut on April 3 for the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his first start on April 5 against the Pittsburgh Pirates and went 1-for-3 with a solo home run. In the Cardinals home opener on April 11, Hazelbaker went 4-for-4 with a triple and a double. He also had a diving catch in left field that helped the Cards to a 10-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The outfielder was a part of the Ball State Cardinals team from 2007-09. 8MAC West Player of the Week: 1B Caleb Stayton took home the honors on April 11. Stayton went a combined 11-for-17 (.647) in four games against Western Michigan and Xavier during that week. In the 21-1 win over Western Michigan, Stayton tied a career high with six RBIs. He ended the game going 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and his first career triple. Stayton currently ranks second nationally with 70 RBIs. The Ball State single-season record is 76 set by Brad Miller in 2006. 8MAC West Pitcher of the Week: LHP Kevin Marnon took home his second Pitcher of the Week award for his April 10 outing against Western Michigan. He pitched seven scoreless innings, only giving up four singles. Marnon held Western Michigan to a.160 batting average while tallying five strikeouts in the 21-1 victory. This marked the second time this season that Ball State players have been named both Player and Pitcher of the Week. 8MAC West Player of the Week: RF Alex Call took home the honors on April 4 after tallying three hits in all four games against Valparaiso and Ohio that week. In the 17-14 win over Ohio, Call finished a single shy of the cycle. Half of Call s hits that week went for extra bases as he tallied three doubles, a triple and two home runs. Call scored 11 times and knocked in 10 runs. 3 BallStateSports.com @BallStateSports #ChirpChirp 2016 Cardinal Baseball @BallStateBB @CoachMaloney 3
