RULES & EXPECTATIONS A TFS CHEERLEADER WILL: Promote good sportsmanship between schools. Be a team player and contribute his/her skills to the success of the team. Promote school spirit. Be present at all events: practices, football games, basketball games, competitions, fundraisers, pep rallies, community service events, etc. QUALIFICATIONS: Scholastic Achievement/Eligibility o All students are required to take, and be passing, a minimum of five courses during the time they are participating in cheerleading. Students are also required to maintain at least a 2.0 GPA at the end of each grading period and semester. Failure to comply with this rule will cause the students to become ineligible to participate in the cheerleading program. (IHSA RULES & DISTRICT POLICY). Student also needs to be academically eligible at the time of try-outs from the semester prior and in the current grade period. o Consistently having poor grades will be handled by coaches. When a cheerleader is on the ineligibility list, the cheerleader must still attend all cheerleading events for the following week. However, the cheerleader cannot cheer at games or competitions while ineligible. The cheerleader must also attend the athletic study hall in order to return back to eligible status. If practice interferes with study hall, cheerleader must attend study hall first. If a cheerleader is on the ineligibility list for more than two consecutive weeks, the cheerleader can be dismissed from the squad. Have good conduct at ALL times. Be financially responsible. Cheerleaders will be responsible to pay on time for all payment plans & any due dates that may arise. Every cheerleader must participate in all fundraising events. Cash will only be accepted for payments. Receipts/confirmation will be given to cheerleader for every payment. Failure to pay/pay on time will result in disciplinary action, removal from the team, or alternate status. EXPECTATIONS: Cheerleaders will be expected to act in a positive and polite manner when in uniform, warm up, or any other TFS cheerleading attire. You represent TFS and you must be a positive role model of the school. Work together as a squad, not as an individual. Display good sportsmanship. You MUST submit to the coaches a record of a physical exam before the first practice. The cheerleader cannot practice until this record is turned in. Missed practices for this reason will be considered unexcused. A sports physical is good for one calendar year. The coaches will designate practice times. Expect 3-5 practices per week and summer practices and conditioning. Practice times will vary but expect late evening practices. Transportation o Cheerleaders will ride the bus to and from all games, competitions, camp etc. The only exception is if a note is written to the athletic director and signed by parents at least 24 hours before event. Athletic Director must approve. It is easier and SAFE when all students take the bus to/from events. o o Coaches WILL NOT provide rides. It is a liability. Cheerleaders must find rides to practices/events before meeting time. If cheerleader is late due to inability to find ride, it will be an UNEXCUSED absence.

The TFS cheerleading squad is a full year squad. The cheerleading season includes: summer practices, summer clinic/camp, football and basketball season, and competitions. Approximately from May to March. Schedules will be given ahead of time to plan around work, vacations, etc. Competitions can be any weekend in December first weekend in February. o There will be a tryout in October for the competition squad. Everyone on the team will be reevaluated at that time to determine if they will stay on the team or not. It is possible that new athletes can replace current athletes. Participation in other sports/activities o o Participation in summer sports (i.e. lansing softball or volleyball) cannot conflict with practices or games. Participation in Fall/Winter TFS sports is prohibited. Cheerleaders CAN partake in Spring sports at TFS. If in doubt, ask a coach for clarification. If absent due to another sport/activity, inside or outside of the school, the absence will be counted as UNEXCUSED. A cheerleader CANNOT be on any recreation or all-star cheerleading team while also on the TFS team. (IHSA rules). If any injury occurs during the cheer season, the cheerleader is still expected to attend games and practices (within reason). If the athlete goes to the doctor for an injury and the doctor says the cheerleader must sit out, a doctor s release is required to return to cheerleading. Seeing the on-site athletic trainer for minor injuries is available to all cheerleaders and recommended. If cheerleader does not see the school trainer or doctor, they are expected to participate in practices, games, competitions, etc. o When seeing the trainer to heat/ice/do therapy, it must be done before practice/game and cheerleader must be at practice/game on time. RULES: Not complying with the rules will result in disciplinary action, meeting with parents, coaches and Athletic Director and/or removal from the team. Any smoking, drinking, drug use, or fighting will warrant immediate removal from the squad. Cheerleaders should pay attention to the game at all times. NO talking to friends, parents, or family during the game/practice. Cheerleaders will not fix hair, put on make-up, spray perfume, etc. in the stands. It is expected that the cheerleader will ARRIVE to game 100% ready. Absolutely NO chewing gum while cheering at games or at practice. It is a safety hazard. No jewelry is to be worn at games or practices. This includes studs. Again, a safety hazard. No public displays of affection in any TFS cheer attire. No cell phones during practice or games. Cheerleaders will respect each other, coaches, captains, other students and any faculty member at Thornton Fractional South H.S. and will be expected to follow all TFS rules. If a cheerleader displays a negative attitude and is disrupting the productivity of the squad, the coaches have the right to dismiss the cheerleader or take other disciplinary actions. In case of illness, the coach, and only the coach must be called/emailed at least two hours prior to a game or practice. If leaving school early and not planning on returning to practice/game, you must notify the coach. Other cheerleaders are not responsible for telling the coach you will not be attending. Cheerleaders must be on time for all practices. If you are running late, you must contact the coach. Arrangements must be made ahead of time. If a practice is missed where a routine for a game is being taught, the cheerleader will sit during the performance/s taught at the missed practice. Based on the reason for the absence, the coaches will decide if the cheerleader will cheer on the sidelines. Nails need to be kept at a short length. For competitions, nails must be cut short and have no nail-polish on. Owning Rebel Cheerleading clothing is an honor. Do not allow other friends to wear your cheerleading attire.

Under the TFS Athletic Code of Conduct, TFS athletes must monitor their social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, snapchat, etc.) If a cheerleader is using excessive use of profanity, gossiping about any other cheerleader, or speaking in any way that is frowned upon, he/she will be warned by the coaches and asked to remove it. (Coaches and Athletic Director have the right to immediately remove a cheerleader from the team without warning if social network content is felt to be extremely inappropriate). If the cheerleader continues to violate the social media rules removal from the team will be discussed with parents. EXPENSES: Please read the expense list for details on all costs, fundraisers, etc. The 1 st payment is due at the parent/athlete meeting for those who make the team. The parent/athlete meeting will be May 3 rd at 7pm in the cafeteria. The 1 st payment is $50. Only cash is accepted for all payments receipts will be given. IMPORTANT DATES: Mandatory Summer Stunt Clinic: June 17th (9am-1pm) Break: July 3-6th Break: July 31-Aug 12 th Mandatory Choreography: Aug 19 th & 20 th (10am-4pm each day) Mandatory Fall Stunt Clinic: September 23rd (9am-1pm) RULE INFRACTIONS: When rules are broken by cheerleader, conditioning will be done at coaches discretion. If breaking the rules becomes consistent, parents will be notified and cheerleader can claim alternate status for competition or can be removed from team. GAME/PRACTICE ATTENDANCE (EXCUSED): Excused absences will be allowed. HOWEVER, if they become excessive (Coaches discretion), a sit down meeting with coaches, athlete, parent/s and possibly Athletic Director will be conducted to discuss future actions. The ONLY absences that are considered EXCUSED are: -Doctor appointment (must have note) -Death in the family or funeral

GAME/PRACTICE ATTENDANCE (UNEXCUSED): Anything not listed above is considered unexcused including not coming to practice because you are sick and you do not have a doctor s note. Missing practice effects your teammates. Others cannot stunt if someone in their group is absent. Being at practices/games is crucial to the success of the team. Absences also cause athletes to get behind on material being taught. CONTACT INFORMATION: All coaches contact information will be distributed once cheerleader makes the team. If you have any questions that relate directly to tryouts, please go to the contact the coaches tab on www.tfscheer.weebly.com
