Reefline FRESH FISH AUCTION SATURDAY 5:00PM SUNDAY 4:30PM

Hi Everyone, I hope you all had a non-stressful xmas and new-year break. Most of us are back to the same old routines, but at least mother nature is making it more bearable with the current period of good weather. (She can send some rain at night if she wishes) It has been pointed out the need for more care in the water around the jetties. I would hate to see a total ban put on swimming etc. in this area, but if kids, young and old, cannot use a little grey matter, when enjoying the water, then it might have to be considered at some point. When boats are being launched, retrieved, or heading to the ramps, DO NOT ENTER THE WATER UNTIL THEY ARE WELL OUT OF THE WAY!! If your family, and/or friends, do enjoy this area, please pass on our thoughts. Signage will also be placed on the jetties in the near future, with some rules for swimmers and fishermen. If you see anyone endangering themselves, or others, please let them know the error of their ways. Lastly, just a reminder to all boaties, that there are rules that need to adhered to on the water. Two that come to mind are, The maximum speed permitted for all boats in New Zealand is 5 knots (about 9 km/h) within 200 metres of shore or any boat with a dive flag, and within 50 metres of any other boat or swimmer Enjoy the water, and be safe while doing so. Happy 2016 Matt Hipperson Commodore PBC 2016 Quiz Series taking registrations now, don t let your team miss out on this year s series, we are limited to 18 teams next quiz 254 March Plimmerton Boating Club (Inc.) February 2016 Power boat report We've had some fantastic weather over the last couple of months with plenty of opportunities to get out for a fish and dive. The water temperatures have been hitting the 20 deg mark the last few days. There have been some good catches of Snapper, Terakihi and Kingfish seen at the filleting bench. The viz has also been pretty good which has helped the divers and spearos to score some cracking catches as well. Todate the Albacore have been thin on the ground with only the odd one being caught but if this warm weather holds I'm sure they will be around in number soon. The organising of the 2016 fishing competition has been underway since before Christmas, we have been lucky to retain the great sponsors we had last year. Harvey World travel have come up with a cracking Vanuatu 10 day cruise for the longest Snapper..yes you read that right we have made some changes to the competition this year. All fish will be measured for this year s competition; this gives people the option of returning the big breeders but still being eligible for a prize. All you have to do is take photograph of the fish on an official competition measure (available for purchase if required) with your competition tag number in the shot and email it to the email address in the rules. To encourage fish to be brought in for the auction we have changed second heaviest fish to average length, this gives every fish entered a shot at a prize. The prize list is currently being finalised with our main sponsor Hunting and Fishing and will be available on the website soon. The competition has been lucky with the weather over the last few years however just in case our luck runs out and both the designated days are blown off we have decided to have a back up day the following weekend. The entry forms and rules are on the clubs website, the first 100 registered entries will receive a cooler bag with the sponsors and clubs logos on. The dates of the competition are 12 th and 13 th March so make a note in the diary now and tell your mates as well. There will be a fish auction at the end of both days so tell your friends, family and whanau to get down to the club to buy some of the freshest and cheapest fish this year. See you all at the fishing comp Jon Mayne Vice Commodore Power Boats 6

Water - what's it to you? We love our water around here and use it a lot - the sea, the harbour and the creeks. Some of the ways we use water are causing problems - like the bits of the harbour that are too dirty to safely swim or boat in, and the way our stormwater infrastructure creaks at the seams when it rains hard. Waterrelated improvements are tricky and cost a lot though, and no-one wants a higher rates bill! Wellington Regional Council's Whaitua Committee want to know what matters most to you, so they can make a water management plan for the catchment that invests our money on the right things. Tell them what you think! Click here to do it online, or scribble them on one of the survey forms at the Club rooms and stick it in the box. Plimmerton members on the Whaitua committee are keen to hear from anyone anytime, and happy to talk to groups: John McKoy - realmckoy@xtra.co.nz Warrick Lyon - warrick.lyon@niwa.co.nz 13

Sailing Academy Report February 2016 For Reefline We are well into our season now with approximately 50 young people sailing in the Academy. Our second Learn To Sail Group is about to start, our first has already transferred into the Rainbow Sessions on Saturday morning. Launching This year we have introduced our Open & Green Fleet sailors to Sunday morning club racing which is turning out to be very successful and we currently have a series running along side of the senior fleet. Specialised coaching clinics are happening with Paramata sailors. Learn To Sail is currently running on Mondays. We ran a Resuscitation course at the beginning of the season in October which was arranged by Charlotte Dempster and was well attended. The Opti-sail camp was run by Titahi Bay in January and we had 11 sailors attend from Plimmerton out of 40 from the Wellington region. This is great for young sailors to build their confidence and gain a greater skill level while having fun. Getting ready for a start. Green Fleet We have had 3 combined sailing days with Paramata either at Plimmerton or at Paramata so far this season. 14

Racing. Green Fleet. The club picnic at Shelly Bay was well attended and a fun day with lots of families attending. James Bitchener attended the Opti North Island Champs at Napier in November. The conditions were challenging with very light winds and large swells. James finished in the middle of the fleet but gained some very valuable experience. Our Green Fleet Sailors Left to Right, Sabre Ostenberry, Matthew Gaunt, Thomina & The schools regatta was held on 10 th February at Paramata with some great results from our Plimmerton Sailors as follows: Opti Green Primary School First Sabre Ostenberry, Third Jack Olson. Opti Green Secondary School First Matthew Gaunt Opti Open Secondary School First James Bitchener Starlings Secondary School 6th Finn Georgeson, 8 th Equal Darby Georgeson & Ollie Botha. We have just returned from the Interislander Regatta which was held in Picton over last weekend (19-21 Feb)which was attended by approximately 180 sailors from all around NZ. We had 12 sailors and their families attend, 7 in the Opti Green Fleet, 1 in the Opti Open Fleet and 4 in Starlings. This was greatly as- 15

sisted by Paramata BC helping arrange the travel and accommodation for our group which was around 70 people in total. Most of the sailors had never been to a national regatta before and we were inspired by some outstanding results. James Bitchener qualified for the Gold Fleet out of 107 sailors in the Opti Open class. Pheobe Wood was 10 th place overall in the Opti Green Fleet out of 42 sailors and was also the first girl in this class. Lilah Smith finished 18 th overall and was fourth girl. We are looking forward to the Plimmerton Regatta on the 28 th February and the Wellington Centreboard Champs at Paramata on the 12 th & 13 th March. Many thanks to Todd Olson our Vice Commodore of Sailing who s support of the junior sailing has been a huge help to us this season in maturing the Academy. Warren & Carol. Opti Green & Open Fleet (Sabre Ostenberry missing) James Bitchener, Matthew, Siobhen, Thomina, Catriona, Lilah & Phoebe. Starling Sailors Left to Right, Shania Ostenberry, Jack Matthews (Paramata), Onno (Paramata), Ollie Botha, Darby & Finley Georgeson. 16

Summer report We are all enjoying a great summer so far with reports that the fishing is going well, the warm currents have arrived and with it the King fish, Tuna and Snapper being caught in abundance With the beautiful weather we have seen many people jumping off the Jetties, while this may be great fun we have had three near misses with children diving into shallow water and almost being crushed by boats coming into the jetty. It is illegal to swim with 50 metres of a wharf or jetty and it is dangerous, can people please use common sense when monitoring their children, also now we have the seat and bait board on the southern jetty we have more people there fishing, it is important when fishing to remove your lines when boats are entering the jetty area. We have erected new signage at the club at both entry points Please note: On boating days, cars with trailers only to be in the car park, all crew boats and jetty fishers to be parked outside, with Club Members having larger boats and trailers compared to 5 years ago manoeuvring and parking can become interesting, it was pleasing to see on Monday the club car park full with cars with trailers and not one lone car to be seen. The committee are currently reviewing the parking areas at the club and sometime in the near future the painted parking areas will be repainted clearly. Richard has a great couple of months coming up in the club, so don t forget to ask your friends to come down and enjoy some great entertainment and a meal at the club, with the best views from a restaurant in Wellington.
