The Challenger Team is a team of players with special needs ranging in age from 10-25 years old. With most of the players being on the team for more than five years, parents say that the team is a family. On the first day of practice, everyone is excited to see each other. During each practice, they perform drills to improve their skills and play a short scrimmage game to use the skills they have been taught. PAGE 2 Granada Blvd. (SR40) Lane Closure Beginning on Monday, September 30, 2013, and continuing through Friday, November 22, 2013, there will be evening lane closures on Granada Boulevard (SR40) between Washington Street and Beach Street. The lane closures will be from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and are necessary for the installation of landscaping, irrigation and decorative lighting within the raised medians in the downtown corridor. The existing bahia grass is scheduled to be sprayed on September 23, 2013, to prepare for removal. If you have any questions, or need additional information, regarding this closure, please contact the City of Ormond Beach Engineering Division at 386-676-3269. FDOT Roadway Resurfacing The Northbound lane of US1 will be resurfaced between Woodland Avenue and Nova Road starting September 22, 2013. The project will also include improvements to: sidewalk, guardrail, minor drainage, and pavement markings. The roadway resurfacing will be for the north bound lane only and work will be conducted day and night. There will be lane closure only. Steve Carlson is the FDOT Public Information Officer assigned to the project, Mark Garcia is the operations engineer for FDOT (386) 740-3401. P&S Paving is the primary contractor, Brian Davidson (386) 258-7911, is their project manager. Volusia County Road Work Volusia County will be milling S. Beach Street from the Ormond / Holly Hill line north to Division Avenue on Friday and Monday September 20th & 23rd and paving on the later part of Monday and Tuesday the 24th. The County project manager is Kim Secord (386) 736-5967.
PAGE 3 Florida Licensing On Wheels The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) mobile unit will be at City Hall on Monday, September 30 th, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. FLOW is a standalone mobile office with technology to provide most motorists needs. It provides drivers license/id card change of address, renewals, replacements, and renewals and replacements of vehicle registration and disabled parking permits, as well as other needs. The only thing FLOW does not provide is for the drivers license road test. FLOW brings services to the local communities offering a convenience to citizens while saving them time and gas. PAGE 4 King of the Grill On Saturday, September 28th, Rockefeller Gardens will be surrounded with the tantalizing aroma of barbeque. Amateur and professional chefs, using a variety of unique and tasty ingredients, will compete to be awarded the prize of King of the Grill. This is the second year the Ormond Beach Chamber of Commerce is hosting the event. You can judge the best of the best with the purchase of an amateur judging card for $10 which allows you to taste the creations. In addition to vendors, and a Kid s Zone, there will be a beer garden broadcasting UF, FSU and Miami football games. General admission is $5, children 3 and under are free. The fun begins at Noon and goes until 7:00 p.m. Amazing World of Illusions The Amazing World of Illusions VIII was presented at the Ormond Beach Performing Arts Center on Saturday, September 14th. Comedy magician Glen Foster, who performs his magic shows regularly on the Disney Cruise Line and for many corporate clients, stunned the crowd with his feats of comedy mind reading, cards tricks, and close-up magic. Illusionist Kendrix amazed the audience with his Las Vegas style illusions. It was night of family friendly entertainment and fun that was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children and adults in the audience.
PAGE 5 Coed Volleyball The Fall Youth Coed Volleyball team began practice on September 9th at the Nova Community Center. Games, training and practice will take place twice a week on various days. Players are separated based on skill level. Each night, participants do a short warm up, skill drills and play games. SONC The South Ormond Neighborhood Center is still booming despite a little inclement weather which has kept the crowds slightly down at the splash pad. Several meetings were held at the Center this week including the AmVet regional meeting, a MLK Prayer Breakfast planning meeting, and YMCA Soccer. Jazzercise classes continue, the Pride football players have been on the field, and as always, free play basketball is jamming.
PAGE 6 ECHO Rangers To Visit The Casements On Saturday, September 21st, children in grades 1-5 will participate in the ECHO educational program at The Casements. The ECHO rangers travel to sites listed in their passports for tours and activities at each location. Rangers get a passport stamp upon completing their tour. The program highlights Volusia County s Ecological. Cultural, Heritage and Outdoor treasures. The program sites are at various parks, museums, historical sites and libraries throughout the county. PAGE 7 Parks Beautification Our Parks Maintenance staff recently made several repairs and upgrades in various areas throughout the City. New handicap accessible picnic tables were installed at the play area at Fire Station #91 and Milton Pepper Park. The loose and broken deck board on the pier at Sanchez Park was repaired making it safer for anglers testing their luck. At the Magic Forest Playground in Nova Community Park, staff secured four picnic tables to the concrete slab. Staff also installed a new trash receptacle at Milton Pepper Park for patrons to use. These repairs and upgrades are only a small portion of what the Parks Maintenance crew do each week to keep the City safe and looking beautiful for everyone.
