Contents 2-4 Match background 12/13 League statistics 5 Latest match, injury/disciplinary news 14-18 Dundalk Match-by-match lineups 6/7 Squad and management information 19/20 Team facts 8/9 Results & fixtures information 21 Head-to-head 10/11 League tables This press kit includes information relating to this Airtricity League Premier Division match. Match background Dundalk and Saint Patrick s Athletic will meet for the 184th time in competition when they go head-to-head at Richmond Park on Sunday afternoon (kick-off 3pm). It is the clubs 122nd league meeting, the 62nd league encounter and 91st in all competitions on St. Pat s turf. As well as the league, the clubs have faced each other in the FAI Cup, League Cup, Shield, Leinster Senior Cup, President s Cup, Casey Cup and City Cup. Last September, Dundalk ended a 21-year wait for a win over Saint Patrick s Athletic at Richmond Park when goals from Matthew Tipton and Ross Gaynor helped them to a 2-1 victory. Tipton s goal ended a 12-year long for a league goal against the Saints. Dundalk had won at Richmond Park in June 2005 when they came from behind to defeat Dublin City 3-2 in the First Division. They looked like adding another win at the Inchicore venue earlier this year when, on 25 March, Mark Quigley s superb brace had them 2-0 up by the 48th minute. However, quick-fire goals from brothers David and Evan McMillan either side of the hour mark levelled it before David Mulcahy, on his 100th appearance for the Saints, won it in the final minute of normal time. Dundalk again took the lead in the last meeting of the sides, just last month, as Colin Hawkins headed in on 56 minutes against his former club. But again St. Pat s hit back, strikes from Ian Daly and Daniel North in a six-minute spell proving enough to give them a 2-1 win. St. Pat s have only lost one game in 14 outings in all competitions at Richmond Park this year, their sole defeat coming against Bray Wanderers in their first home league game of the season. Having started the league season with three straight defeats on the road, and an unbeaten seven-match run at home, Dundalk now have a better average of points away from Oriel Park. From their ten away games, they have picked up 16 points (1.6 points per game) compared to 16 points in 11 home games (1.45 points per game). They have accumulated the same number of points on the road as both Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers. Dundalk s all-time top scorers against St. Pat s are as follows: 10 Francie Callan, 8 Jimmy Hasty, 7 Ben Hannigan, Jimmy Dainty and Mick Fairclough, 6 Joe Martin DUNDALKFC.COM 2

and Turlough O Connor. Dundalk have played a total of 31 games this year. Their overall record reads: P31 W14 D7 L10 F54 A40. St. Pat s have played 31 games, their record reading: P30 W17 D6 L7 F49 A26. Dundalk s scorers, in all competitions, are: 14 Mark Quigley, 8 Daniel Kearns, 7 Mark Griffin, 6 Jason Byrne, 4 Colin Hawkins, 3 Ross Gaynor, Keith Ward and Johnny Breen, 2 Greg Bolger and Michael Hector, 1 Shane Guthrie and Dean Bennett. The Saints scorers, in all competitions, are: 12 Daniel North, 7 Daryl Kavanagh, 5 David McMillan, 4 Evan McMillan, Derek Doyle and Ian Daly, 3 Anto Murphy, 2 David Mulcahy and Brian Shortall, 1 Paul Crowley, Derek Pender, Jake Carroll, Seán Stewart, Neil Harney and Derek Prendergast (own goal v Bray Wanderers). Seven of Quigley s eight league goals have come in the first half. His only secondhalf strike was against St. Pat s at Richmond Park, when he netted in the 48th minute. Interestingly, it is the opposite in other competitions as his other six goals (5 Setanta Sports Cup, 1 FAI Cup) have all been scored in the second half. 11 of Quigley s 14 goals in all competitions have come away from home his only home goals all coming against Galway United (18 March, 5 June and 24 June). His recent hat-trick against Bray was his first for the club having previously hit three doubles against Linfield, St. Pat s and Cliftonville. Five of Griffin s six goals have been scored in the second half. Five of his six goals have also come away from home, the exception being a 52nd-minute header against Galway on 24 June. Kearns has also shown a liking for netting after the half-time break, scoring three of his eight goals in all competitions in the final seven minutes of games, with three others also coming during the second half. Ex-UCD pair Bolger and Ward have both found two league goals this term, the former netting both in the first half and the latter netting his after the break. In their 31 competitive games this year, Dundalk have scored 54 and conceded 40, an average of just over three goals per game. Having scored 36 and conceded 26 in the league, a total of 62 goals in 21 games, their league games have produced an average of just under three goals per game. Split into halves, Dundalk have scored 22 and conceded 15 in the first 45, and scored 32 and conceded 25 in the second half. In the league, their first-half score is 17-10 and second-half is 19-16. Four of the Lilywhites goals have come from the penalty spot, Byrne netting home and away to Shamrock Rovers (2 May and 4 March) and Quigley converting at home to Galway (5 June, FAI Cup) and away to Bray (28 June). Of their 17 first-half league goals, eight of those have come in the final three minutes of the half, with just two coming in the first 15 minutes. Their fastest goal DUNDALKFC.COM 3

was Byrne s after seven minutes at home to Sligo on 15 April. Their latest was Quigley s at home to Galway on 24 June as he netted in the first minute of addedon time. In the second half, five of their 19 goals have come in either the 71st or 72nd minute. Six more have come in the final ten minutes. Their quickest second-half goal was Ward s at home to Galway on 24 June. Their latest goals came four minutes into injury-time, Griffin away to UCD on 20 May and Ward away to Bray on 28 June. Overall, Dundalk are fifth on the first-half table, leading seven times at the break, drawing ten and losing four times. They are two places above St. Pat s, who have been ahead four times, drawing 15 and losing just twice. The only times they were behind at half-time were away to Shamrock Rovers on 18 March and at home to Dundalk on 25 March. After the break, St. Pat s have been one of the most productive teams in the top flight, winning 12, drawing four and losing five, scoring 25 the joint-highest second-half goals in the league and conceding 12 along the way. They are third behind Sligo and Derry City, while Dundalk lie sixth. Quigley has scored in every month since the season got underway February (2), March (4), April (2), May (1) and June (5). He will have to net against either St. Pat s this weekend or Derry on 22 July to continue that record. Only Simon Madden has played every second of Dundalk s 31 competitive games this year. Since signing on 22 July last, Madden has played the entire 4,230 minutes (plus injury-time) of the club s 47 games, meaning he is on target to play his 50th game in exactly one calendar year at Derry City on 22 July. Quigley has also played in all 31 games, but having been subbed in once and subbed out six times, he has not been an ever-present. His run of appearances will come to an end against UCD next week as he serves a one-match suspension having accumulated four yellow cards. Along with Madden and Quigley, Nathan Murphy and Ward have appeared in all 11 home games in the league, Nathan missing only the first 33 minutes of the Louth Derby defeat by Drogheda United on 10 June. Away from home, Gaynor has played every minute of the ten league games. Peter Cherrie has started every away league game but missed most of the opening one at Shamrock Rovers having been sent-off on 23 minutes. Eight of Dundalk s now 17-man squad have played at least 2,160 minutes (24 games) this season, with Madden the runaway leader on 2,820 (31 games plus 30 minutes extra-time in the League Cup). With Quigley (2,618) suspended next week, Cherrie (2,543) should overtake him into second. Dundalk have the fourth best disciplinary record in the Premier Division with 37 yellow cards and one red card in their 21 games. Along with St. Pat s, they are the only team yet to have an outfield player sent-off this season. In the only other Dundalk game Richie Winter has refereed this season, at home to Bray Wanderers on 29 April, he has handed out one yellow card to Ian Foster s side, that given to Quigley on 78 minutes. Latest match, injury/disciplinary news Dundalk Last Match: Friday 1 July: Dundalk 1-3 Bohemians (Griffin 61; Fagan 6, O Brien 84, Flood 89) Late strikes from Ger O Brien and Anto Flood saw Bohemians snatch a 3-1 win over Dundalk at Oriel Park last Friday evening, as they recovered from Mark Griffin s goal just past the hour mark to take a precious victory away from the border venue. Bohs had been ahead from the sixth minute when Christy Fagan headed in from close range following a corner. But after a bright start to the second half, the home side deservedly levelled when Griffin glanced in Ross Gaynor s cross for his seventh goal in nine league starts. However, Bohs came into it after that and sealed maximum points in the final six minutes as O Brien (84) and Flood (89) both found the net. Injury/Disciplinary news For the trip to Richmond Park, Ian Foster must again plan without long-term injured pair, left-back Eoghan Osborne (fractured tibia) and central midfielder Stephen McDonnell (knee), while centre-half Colin Hawkins serves a one-match ban having accumulated four yellow cards. Experienced striker Jason Byrne (hamstring) is rated doubtful. Miscellaneous The last game Dundalk played without Simon Madden was against Levski Sofia in the UEFA Europa League at Oriel Park on Thursday 22 July last year, the morning that the young defender signed. This game is likely to see left-back Nathan Murphy make his 50th competitive appearance for the club, and at 18 years of age he is believed to be the youngest ever player to reach that milestone for the club. Central midfielder Stephen Maher, who has not started since 18 March due to injury, could also reach the half century. Saint Patrick s Athletic Last League Match: Sunday 3 July: Shamrock Rovers 1-0 Saint Patrick s Athletic (Twigg 53) Gary Twigg s strike eight minutes into the second half proved enough to send Shamrock Rovers back to the top of the Premier Division as they ended Saint Patrick s Athletic s 14- match unbeaten run in the league with a 1-0 win at Tallaght Stadium last Sunday afternoon. Twigg finished off a superb team move which involved 16 passes, as the Hoops recorded their first win in three games. St. Pat s could have opened the scoring in the opening period, with Daryl Kavanagh going close with a 20-yard shot that went narrowly wide of Alan Mannus right-hand post. Ronan Finn, Gary McCabe and Twigg all shot wide at the other end before the latter found the net after the break. The closest the Inchicore club came to a leveller came from a late Derek Doyle corner but Shane McFaul s header flew over the bar. Injury/Disciplinary news Saint Patrick s Athletic manager Pete Mahon will be without vice captain, central midfielder Stephen Bradley who serves a one-match suspension after accumulating four yellow cards. Club captain Conor Kenna returned to training during the week. Miscellaneous Saint Patrick s Athletic s last home defeat was against Bray Wanderers on 11 March when the visitors came from 2-0 down with 20 minutes to win 3-2. DUNDALKFC.COM 5

Team facts Dundalk Domestic club competition honours Dundalk FC has won nine Premier Division titles since joining the League of Ireland in 1926. They won their first league in the 1932/33 season but had to wait until 1963 for another one, before winning seven more in a 28-year spell from 1967 to 1995, their last top-flight triumph. They have, however, won two First Division titles in the meantime, the first of those coming in 2001 and the latest in November 2008. The Lilywhites have also won nine FAI Cups, the latest coming in their last cup final appearance in 2002. Also on the club s roll of honour are four League Cups although they have not won that competition since 1990. Dundalk competed in Europe last July for the first time since 2002. They were at the top of the pile for close to three months but lost their place at the summit in the final game before the midseason break in June. After returning from two weeks off, Dundalk won just one of their subsequent ten league games, before a run of five wins in seven including a 5-1 hammering of eventual champions Shamrock Rovers and a first victory at Richmond Park in 21 years over a five-week period in September and October ensured a sixth-place finish. In the FAI Cup, Dundalk exited at the first hurdle, falling to St. Pat s. They made it to the semi-finals of the League Cup, losing 1-0 at Monaghan United. In the Leinster Senior Cup, they defeated Ballymun United before losing on penalties at Bray Wanderers. Team facts Saint Patrick s Athletic Domestic club competition honours Saint Patrick s Athletic have won seven Premier Division titles since they were admitted into the League of Ireland in 1951, with the first of those coming in their maiden season in the league. Their last was in the 1998/99 season, in the same year as Dundalk were first relegated. The Saints, incidentally, have never been demoted from the top flight of Irish football. They have also won two FAI Cups, in 1959 and 1961, and two League Cups, in 2001 and 2003. Their last FAI Cup final appearance was in 2006 when they lost 4-3 to Derry City after extra time, after leading three times in the game, at the old Lansdowne Road. Their challenge eventually petered out, with just three wins in their final 12 league games seeing them finish fifth, as they missed out on Europe by five points. However, following the demise of Sporting Fingal in February, the Saints will take their place in the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League. The Saints long wait for an FAI Cup triumph continued as they were knocked out at the semi-final stage by eventual runners-up Shamrock Rovers, Chris Turner scoring the winner in a replay at Richmond Park following an exciting 2-2 draw at Tallaght Stadium two days earlier. The Saints exited the League Cup at the quarter-finals, losing 4-1 in Sligo. They made it all the way to the decider in the Setanta Sports Cup, losing out to Bohemians in the final, incidentally to a header from Anto Murphy, who has since returned to Richmond Park for a third spell. In their other cup outing, they lost to Drogheda United at the first hurdle of the Leinster Senior Cup.
