1 STEWARDS REPORT Newcastle Jockey Club NEWCASTLE RACECOURSE Saturday 25 August 2018 Weather: Overcast Track: Good (3) Rail: +8m STEWARDS: J J E Earl (Chairman), D L Carr, T J Vassallo and cadet M W Purse Supplementary Reports: WYONG Friday 3 August 2018 RACE 1: Halekulani 3yo Maiden Plate 1350m Spatula Stewards today continued their inquiry into G Buckley's riding of the gelding in the aforementioned event. G Buckley stated that after the gelding disappointed at its first race start when ridden back in the field he was instructed to be positive from the barriers and attempt to take up a forward position. He stated that from the outside barrier he had to make some use of his mount to cross and race outside the leader Whaler Bill from the 1100m. G Buckley stated that his mount never travelled comfortably at any stage and when the tempo quickened near the 600m his mount became immediately under pressure and commenced to shift ground, which afforded the favourite Republic, which was racing to his mount's inside, clear running between Spatula and Whaler Bill near the 500m. When questioned as to whether he could have made more effort to hold Republic in a pocket to his mount's inside, and behind Whaler Bill, G Buckley stated that his mount was a tired horse at this point of the race and it shifted wider despite his attempts to maintain a straight course. A report from Racing NSW Betting Analyst M Reid was tendered, which found that whilst Republic was the best supported runner in the race there were no integrity concerns surrounding betting on the event. In all of the circumstances G Buckley's explanation was accepted, however he was nevertheless reminded that he must not ride his mounts so as to advantage other horses. RACE 1: Minco Tech Australia Class 1 & Maiden Plate 2350m Whangamata - began awkwardly and made contact with the outside partition of its barrier. Laid out under pressure in the straight Apache Junction began awkwardly and made contact with the outside partition of its barrier. When questioned regarding the performance of the gelding, rider M Bell stated that his mount was able to obtain a comfortable position in the lead throughout the early and middle stages, however, when placed under pressure near the 600m failed to respond to his riding and was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off. Trainer Mr M Newnham stated that the only explanation he could offer was that Apache Junction failed to run out the distance of todays race. He added that the gelding would now be spelled, and consideration would be given to retiring Apache Junction. Mr Newnham undertook to report back on the immediate racing plans of the gelding in the days subsequent. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.
2 Only You shortly after the start was badly crowded for room between Whangamata and Apache Junction, which shifted in abruptly. Had difficult obtaining completely clear running in the early part of the straight and near the 300m had to be shifted to the outside of Power From Within to continue into clear running. Annie Saturday overraced in the early stages and passing the winning post on the first occasion had to be checked off the heels of Apache Junction after improving onto that runner s heels. Continued to race keenly throughout the early and middle stages. Near the 900m had to be checked off the heels of Whangamata when racing keenly. Power From Within when the pace slackened passing the winning post on the first occasion had to be eased off the heels of Annie Saturday. Dad's Boy Rider S Guymer was reminded of his obligations that he must ride his mounts out to the end of the race at least hands and heels where possible. RACE 2: Civil Sydney Maiden Plate 1885m Hard Hustler as K Latham was overweight, S Guymer was substituted as the rider of the gelding. K Latham was fined $200 under AR120(b). Road to Bordeaux began awkwardly and made contact with the outside partition of its barrier. Shortly after bumped with Iron Duke, resulting in both runners became unbalanced. Pulled hard in the early and middle stages. Cool Dude Ausbred from its wide barrier was steadied and shifted in behind runners in the early stages. Approaching the 1600m got its head up on a number of occasions when being restrained to obtain cover behind Decapitor. Dragon s Blood overraced in the early and middle stages. Lutreola pulled hard in the early and middle stages. Iron Duke laid in under pressure in the straight. Golden Lily A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. RACE 3: MGA Insurance CG&E Handicap 1400m Gretzky Slow to begin. A post-race veterinary examination of the gelding, which raced wide and without cover throughout, revealed no abnormalities. The Cartoonist App. R Hunt pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on 9 occasions prior to the 100m. App. Hunt had her permit to ride in races suspended for a period to commence on Sunday 2 September 2018 and to expire on Friday 7 September 2018, on which day she may ride. App. Hunt was further issued a reprimand under AR137A(5)(a)(i) for using the whip on 4 consecutive occasions prior to 100m. Yeoman Overraced in the early and middle stages. Laid in under pressure in the straight, obliging its rider to change the whip over to his right hand near the 150m.
3 Our Tax Return Began awkwardly. Raced keenly in the middle stages. RACE 4: Leah Jay F&M Class 2 Handicap (Scaled 1.0kg) 1400m Vive Marie When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of the mare, rider A Gibbons stated that after being slow to begin his mount settled at the rear of the field. He added that the mare travelled well throughout the early stages however when his mount was momentarily tightened for room near the 800m Vive Marie was soon under pressure, failed to respond to his riding and as he had concerns with the mare's action, he desisted from riding over the final 200m. A post-race veterinary examination of the mare, which was beaten 18L, revealed no abnormalities. Stable representative Mr P Burns was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Vive Marie having to barrier trial to the satisfaction of the Stewards before being permitted to race again. Eschara Near the 300m was eased when crowded for room between Misteed and Impulsive, which was inclined to lay out under pressure. Misteed Raced keenly in the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Greysful Glamour When questioned regarding his riding in the early stages, app. R Dolan stated he was instructed to ride the filly prominently. He added after beginning only fairly he rode his mount along in the early stages to comply with his instructions however when Misteed was able to cross his mount near the 1200m, he elected to shift his mount to the outside of Misteed as he anticipated that runner shifting to the fence, which would have afforded his mount to obtain a position with cover behind Eschara. He said that when Misteed maintained its position one off the fence, he was unable to find cover and as a result, raced wide and without cover until near the 700m. App. R Dolan agreed with Stewards that in hindsight he should have remained racing behind Misteed in the early stages which would have afforded him a position with cover throughout. RACE 5: Cumi Australia Maiden Plate 900m Pin Feather Began awkwardly and then was bumped by Miss Sibley, which shifted in. Sent From Above Began awkwardly. Sunsilk Girl Near the 700m laid in and across the heels of Dizzy Miss Lizzy and had to be steadied. Dizzy Miss Lizzy Shortly after the start, shifted out and made contact with Sunsilk Girl. RACE 6: Elk Designs Maiden Handicap 1200m Oakfield Romance Prior to the declaration of correct weight, the Stewards identified from the inquiry room that rider App. P Scorse had struck his mount on 10 occasions prior to the 100m. When Stewards could not be satisfied that Oakfield Romance had gained an advantage that resulted in it finishing in 3rd placing in the race, in accordance with AR168(2) they therefore declined to exercise their powers under AR137A(9) and did not proceed with a formal objection. At a subsequent inquiry App. P Scorse pleaded guilty to a charge under AR137A(5)(a)(ii) for using the whip on 10 occasions prior to the 100m. App. Scorse was fined the sum of $200. In assessing penalty, Stewards were mindful that this was App. Scorse's first breach of the rule.
4 Niatross Hung in under pressure in the straight. Near the 300m made contact with Keep On Charging. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be lame (2/5) in the near foreleg. Stable representative Mr P Burns was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the colt racing again. Northern Voyage Raced keenly in the early and middle stages. Raced wide and without cover from the 800m. Laid in under pressure in the straight. Rufio Raced wide and without cover throughout. Heaven Help Me Stewards accepted rider L Magorrian's explanation that he was unable to ride his mount out fully to the end of the race when placed close to the heels of Bollente. She's Sureel Shortly after the start was steadied and shifted in behind runners from its wide draw. Keep On Charging Near the 200m was crowded for room to the inside of Rufio, which laid in despite the efforts of its rider. Chorus Queen Raced keenly in the early stages. Kandos Tiger Pulled hard in the early and middle stages, refusing to settle. RACE 7: Hunter Coatings Newcastle Nobbys Benchmark 70 Handicap 1200m What Could Be Slow to begin. Shortly after the start was badly hampered when crowded between Jack The Ringer and Darbies Blugirl, which shifted out. Miss Faith Near the 1000m had to be checked when crowded for room to the inside of Tennessee Tango, which shifted in after being bumped by Darbies Blugirl, which in turn shifted in and away from Marksfield. Overraced in the middle stages and near the 800m had to be checked away from the heels of Tennessee Tango. Miss Faith was then inclined to hang out thereafter. Held up rounding the home and in the early part of the straight. A postrace veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Jack The Ringer Passing the 800m raced in restricted room between Miss Faith, which hung out, and Michelle's Gift, which was taken in by Northern River. Marksfield A post-race veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Northern River Passing the 1000m had to be eased when crowded for room by Emperor Harada (C O'Brien) shifted in when not quite clear. C O'Brien was advised to exercise more care in similar circumstances. Raced keenly when caught wide and without cover throughout. Tennessee Tango Held up rounding the home turn and in the early part of the straight. Raced in restricted room to the inside of Marksfield passing the 200m. Michelle's Gift Passing the 800m was steadied when crowded for room by Northern River (App. S Vella), which shifted in when not clear. App. Vella was issued a reprimand under AR137(a).
5 RACE 8: Warren Snoopy Arthur Memorial Maiden Handicap 1400m The Promise Laid out under pressure in the straight. Girl Tuesday Hampered when crowded on jumping between Wishbone and Miss Moana, which bounded on jumping and shifted in. Momentum Amethyst Shortly after the start was steadied and shifted in behind runners from its wide draw. Holy Reign Near the 150m was briefly tightened when crowded between Girl Tuesday and Herzegovina, which hung out. Miss Moana Near the 1000m had to be steadied off the heels of Wishbone. When questioned, J Penza stated that his mount never travelled well throughout and when the field quickened from the 600m, Miss Moana was left flat-footed and was one-paced in the run to the finish. He said that, in his opinion, the filly would be suited over a longer distance. A postrace veterinary examination revealed no abnormalities. Herzegovina Raced ungenerously in the middle stages. Hung out under pressure in the straight obliging its rider to stop and straighten his mount near the 150m. Mud Wasp Raced wide and without cover until approaching 800m. GENERAL: Summary of whip use: Stewards noted the following riders exceeded the permitted strikes of the whip prior to the 100m under AR137A(5)(a)(ii). Bearing in mind the totality of whip use, no action was taken.
