ISSUE #62 OCTOBER 2015 COORDINATOR S REPORT We have continued work at New Horizons Club to spruce it up. Many thanks to the few, ever reliable volunteers that have helped. With a special shout out to Laurie who has been painting nearly every day. Thank you also to the Youngtown Rotary crew that came and helped one Monday and got a big chunk of painting done. There is still plenty of work to be done so it would be great to see more of the members here to help look after your club. A big congratulations goes out to Aran Miller. Aran competed in the National Down Syndrome Games in Sydney recently. Aran won a neck full of gold medals (see picture inside) and swam an amazing World record in the 100m backstroke and a Australian record in the 200m freestyle. Well done Aran and we all wish you the very best and hope you get to go to Italy and represent Australia once again. The New Horizons Club Gala Dinner and Auction is fast approaching. There are only 5 tables left to sell, so if you haven't got your tickets yet we would love you to join us; please contact the club. The night is not one to be missed. All funds raised go directly back into the club to continue to support our members and provide sport and recreation opportunities within the community. We are still rounding up the final prizes for the Gala Dinner. If you know someone that can donate, it is not too late. New Horizons Club AGM will be held at the Club on November 9th. It is important members and volunteers attend. Board positions are open for nomination. We are looking for people who are committed to our mission and have a good understanding of the governance required to run the club. If you are interested or know someone that would suit please contact me. A member s party will be held on Friday 27th November. This is a great chance for everyone to catch up and have a social night with friends before Christmas. See inside for more details. I hope you are all enjoying the warmer weather. It has been nice to get outside and be active in the sun. Don't forget to make sure you do you 30mins of activity every day to stay healthy. MESSAGE FROM OUR AMBASSADOR DON ELGIN Hello to all my friends at New Horizons Club, WOW what an amazing time of year. I m so excited and looking forward to this years Gala Function, every year it s one of my highlights. I ve had a very busy time recently with the launch of my book One Foot On The Podium. The response has been over whelming with so many people making contact through my website www.donelgin.com.au to purchase their copy, the best thing about people ordering on my website it means I can sign the book before it gets sent out. The book has taken me a while to finish, it s like most things in life when it s your number one priority you put more time into it but when other things are the main focus then less time goes in. I think the thing I enjoyed the most with selfpublishing my book was how much I got to learn about books. To be really honest I m not a big fan of reading so I was sure to make my book an easy and enjoyable to read, it s a very good reflection on my life and takes in the ups and downs we had along the way. I was keen to capture not only my story but the importance of my parents and how them having the courage to make tough decisions along the way provided me with the best possible upbringing a kid born without half a leg could have. My parents were like so many of the parents of the guys at New Horizons Club, they treated me just like one of the other kids, when I fell over they told me to get back up and have another go and that s what I did. The beauty of the tough love approach is it allows the kid, in this case me, the opportunity to learn what is possible and not be focussed on what may be difficult at the time, it helps build resilience. I d like to take a moment to remind you to make the most of every opportunity that comes your way and above all no matter what the direction your life takes you, always give it your best shot. See you all at this year s Gala Function.
