Ozark Garden Railway Society Dispatch January 2012 Well here are again at the start of a new year. 2011 was another great year for the club. Two layouts were featured in magazines, eight club layouts were on the National Convention pre-tour, the club was invited to set up a second year at the Springfield Botanical Gardens and the OGRS gained several new members, just to mention a few highlights of the year. As with every organization, it is the members that make it a success. In 2011, our members gave a lot of themselves and their time. With everyone s continued participation, 2012 can be even a better year. With that said, A GREAT BIG THANK YOU IS DUE TO EVERY OGRS MEMBER! IF EVERYONE DOES A LITTLE, NO ONE HAS TO DO A LOT! 2011 OGRS Christmas Dinner The 2011 Christmas dinner was a great end of the year event for the club. There was a good turn out and lots of fun and fellowship. As always, the OGRS members were served a great meal by the ladies of the Bois D Arc United Methodist church. THANK YOU LADIES YOU DID A WONDERFUL JOB! Each year the members decide who will receive the Phyllis Levanti award. They vote for the member that they think has contributed to the club and promoted garden railroading the most during the year. The recipient of the award for 2011 was Jerry Cotter. CONGRATULATIONS JERRY! Jerry was awarded the master plaque on which his name was added to the names of previous recipients. Jerry also received two

January Meeting The January meeting will be held on the 21st at the Botanical Gardens in Springfield Mo. from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The address is 2400 S. Scenic. Jerry Davis will be doing a clinic on straightening bent track and lighting buildings. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE THERE. engraved coffee cups. Dennis Rayon did the engraving on the awards. THANKS DENNIS! There were several gifts donated to the club to be given away. Tom DeGeere donated some books. Sandra and Dennis Shonk donated several poinsettias and Wes and Sandi Drummond donated a Bachmann ten wheeler. THANKS AGAIN LADIES AND GENTELMEN! There were several entries this year for the Christmas center piece contest. Charlene Chesbro won first place with her decorated miniature Christmas tree. Sherry Carlisle won second place with her Christmas cottage. A BIG THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PUT HARDWORK INTO ALL THE ENTRIES AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS! 2011 OGRS Christmas Layout At The Springfield Botanical Gardens The 2011 Christmas layout was a huge success. The layout was on display from December 3 rd until January 7 th. The layout is wired with a timer so that when the button is pressed, the trains will run for four minutes. This year, Craig Chesbro installed a counter on the layout so that the club could track the number of times that the button was pressed. Just between December 18 th, (when Craig installed the counter) and January 7 th, the button was pressed 1021 times. The Botanical Gardens staff said that many people came just to see the layout and that the lobby was completely full of people at times. OGRS owes a big thank you to everyone who helped with the setup and the take down, to those who designed and built Christmas scenes for the layout and to Craig for the counter. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL!

Things Too Remember The 2012 club dues are due January 1 st. They are $15 per family. The February meeting will be the 9 th Annual Great Northwest Arkansas Model Train Show. It is Saturday February 25, 2012 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission for the show is $6.00 per person. This year the location has changed to the Holiday Inn NWA Convention Center in Springdale Arkansas. The address is 1500 South 48 th Street Springdale, AR 72762 off of I-540 exit 72. The club needs people to be considering hosting a club meeting in 2012. The months that are not yet taken are April and November. If anyone has something to submit to the newsletter such as how to articles, tips, trivia, history of railroading, pictures of your projects, etc. Send email to Glen Carlisle. carlisle02@sbcglobal.net

The Shell Knob VFW Veterans, Children, and Community Christmas Party this year has a new partner in the form of a G-Scale train layout and a special Christmas train designed for the young and old. The track layout on a foam base was created by Bill Hickory that found its way to Bob Newquist who sold it to Tom Lavely at Tom DeGeere's swap meet this year. Tom (Lavely) aligned and re-spiked the track, painted the foam, framed the layout and created a Christmas Critters train to run at the VFW. Running dates were the 16 through the 18th. Veterans from the Mt. Vernon Home in Missouri were brought down for Christmas fun and bingo. The VFW is dry so the needy children sit on Santa's knee and receive gifts. It is the only event in the U.S. for Veteran's home residents. The layout has been donated to the VFW of Shell Knob. GREAT JOB TOM!
