Hello and welcome to the next quarterly newsletter to keep you informed with what is the latest happenings in the Men s and Mixed versions of the great game we all love Netball. Men s Nationals September 2013 This year saw even more teams entered with 5 A grade teams, Cook Strait made an appearance in this grade for the first time. B grade saw 9 teams competing for the title this was made up of the two masters teams from Canterbury and Wellington as we are still attempting to grow the numbers in this grade. We had our first invitational team the Australian under 17 s playing in the under 23 s grade, who enjoyed their time in NZ we hope to see you again soon. Also mother nature came to play by disrupting flights and cause the tournament management team a few headaches and grey hairs but we pushed through and after day one were back on track to an action packed tournament. Special Mention - Men s Nationals 2014 This will be the 30 th year of Men s Netball nationals in New Zealand and we are going back to where it all started back to Rotorua. We hope to see some life members there, along with current players and hopefully some new faces too. I know that the players from that region are busy organising it and looking forward to hosting us all in 2014 Trophies Uniform (Life Members trophy) Award went to Cook Strait, congratulations. Sportsmanship Award went to Southland Fairplay Award went to Auckland 19 s Goal Aggerate Award went to North Harbour A
Mens Under 23 s Five teams were entered with one being from Australia. Cook Strait were a force to be reckoned with and finished first seeds and also nationals champs after downing Canterbury in the final 42-38. Mens B This grade saw the return of Southland and their stunning management team Sarah and Angee always a delight and pleasure. As mentioned in the masters section Canterbury Masters went through the round robin undefeated showing everyone that will their bodies might not quite be what they use to be but the skills were still there all be a bit slower and they ended out taking the title and maintaining their unbeaten status. Playing Nelson/Tasman in the finals 52-38 Masters Over 35 s We only had two teams so they played in the B grade, they represented themselves very well and showed their class on court. Wellington masters just missed out on the playoffs by finishing 5 th after round robin play. Canterbury masters were another story finishing undefeated after round robin and went into the semis as first seeds, more about how they did in the next section. Men s A This saw a number of close results in the round robin play of the tournament between the teams, with Canterbury losing their first game in years to North Harbour. The final would see these two teams contesting it ones again but this time the game went into overtime. This was a game to watch as it showcased just what the game can be with skill, athleticism, heart, determination and teamwork all on display. Canterbury continued their national championship title grip in the end though to win the final 55 53. Well done to both teams for a riveting final you should all hold your heads up high for the fantastic display that you put on display
Often the most thankless job in tournaments, the villains or the heroes depending on their calls and what team you are supporting. Quite often the umpires come off the court sweating almost as much as some of the players. But the New Zealand Men s and Mixed Netball association would like to offer you our sincerest thanks as we are aware that without officials and volunteers there is no tournament. With the support of Netball New Zealand at Men s Nationals we had an umpiring coaching panel, which allowed umpires to progress through the different levels of certification. A special thank you goes out to the umpiring panel Gareth Fowler, Pam Clayton, and Linda Liggins. We hoped you enjoyed the tournament and hope to see you again in Auckland for the Mixed Nationals.
