The current levy ends Dec. 31, 2015. If the levy passes on Nov. 4, 2014, the new funding would begin on Jan. 1, 2016 and would con nue for five years. If the levy fails to pass, Extension programs will be greatly reduced or completely eliminated. The Monroe County Extension Office has received local funding through a levy first passed by voters in 2000. Funding has been renewed by voters ever since. This year is different, however. Due to a state level legal ruling (a technical change made in the Ohio Revised Code) the county has been advised to let the current levy end on Dec. 31, 2015 and start over with a new levy beginning Jan. 1, 2016 instead of a renewal or replacement. Therefore, voters will see a ballot that says an addi onal tax ; however, the millage is the same as it has always been at 0.7 mill for five years. Local funds are matched by state and federal dollars and allow Extension to serve county residents through the 4 H Youth Development, Family and Consumer Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Community Development and SNAP Ed programs. However, without local dollars, there can be no Extension Service within Monroe County. The Monroe County Services Levies Commi ee is in the process of campaigning for Extension s levy. For more informa on, yard signs, or to volunteer, please contact commi ee chairs John Lusk (740 472 0571) or Steve Schumacher (740 391 8012). Celebra ng 100 Years of Extension With A Look at Monroe County Extension Employees Extension work in Monroe County was organized in 1918. Since that me, there have been 10 Agriculture Agents (1918 present), 8 Home Economics/Family & Consumer Sciences Agents (1954 present), 12 4 H Agents (1956 present), 2 Rural/Economic Development Agents (1958 1938), 18 support staff (1952 present) and 21 summer assistants (1987 2014). Over the last 92 years, OSU Extension in Monroe County has employed 67 individuals. Many of them moved on to other Extension posi ons across Ohio. Some employees served for a summer, others a year or two, while several have made serving the people of Monroe County their career. The dedica on and commitment of a few are evident to many by the buildings and awards found locally and in the organiza on that bear their name. The Extension Professionals Creed (originally the Extension Workers Creed), wri en by W.A. Lloyd in 1927, is a las ng testament to genera ons of coopera ve extension employees across the country. EXTENSION PROFESSIONALS' CREED I Believe in people and their hopes, their aspira ons, and their faith; in their right to make their own plans and arrive at their own decisions; in their ability and power to enlarge their lives and plan for the happiness of those they love. I Believe that educa on, of which Extension is an essen al part, is basic in s mula ng individual ini a ve, self determina on, and leadership; that these are the keys to democracy and that people when given facts they understand, will act not only in their self interest, but also in the interest of society. I Believe that educa on is a lifelong process and the greatest university is the home; that my success as a teacher is propor onal to those quali es of mind and spirit that give me welcome entrance to the homes of the families I serve. I Believe in intellectual freedom to search for and present the truth without bias and with courteous tolerance toward the views of others. I Believe that Extension is a link between the people and the ever changing discoveries in the laboratories. I Believe in the public ins tu ons of which I am a part. I Believe in my own work and in the opportunity I have to make my life useful to humanity. Because I Believe these things, I AM an Extension professional. 4-H Express 4 September-October 2014
