President's Message You may recall there was no President's Message in last months newsletter. That s because Carol and I were away on a ski trip. That s right, a ski trip in August. Since the southern hemisphere has winter when we have summer we traveled to Argentina to the resort of Cero Catedral near Baraloche. The skiing was world class and it was fun to visit another country. Our main problem was a volcano only 20 miles away that shut down the local airports, canceled our in country flights and required a 28 hour bus ride back to Buenos Aries. We were still happy we were able to ski in August. Monthly meetings are back at the Chapman Cultural Center. The program starts at 7:30 but please come at 7 for for a social before the program. The club no longer provides alcohol for liability reasons but feel free to bring your own. Spartanburg's International Festival on Saturday Oct 1st is a great event. Come out and work this event with your fellow club members and allow time to visit the exhibits and sample the food from many countries. See you there, Mark Page 2

International Festival Saturday, October 1, 2011 10:00 am-7:00 pm The SSOC will be manning a beer booth for the International Festival coming up October 1. This is the club s final obligation to the city to be permitted to work Music on Main for the year. This is a great event with international food and booths, and the parade of nations, A total of 15 people are needed for the day and the hours will be divided into 3 hour shifts. Each shift needs 5 people, 3 to serve beer and one each to check IDs and sell tickets. Shifts available are: 1:00-4:00 PM 4:00-7:00 PM To sign up with your shift preference, please contact me at mojonesie@aol.com. Many thanks for your continued efforts and support! Marty Page 3

October Mini-Social Our next mini-social is on Wednesday October 12 at 6:30. The restaurant is the "Spice of Life" in downtown Spartanburg 100 Woodrow Street. Woodrow Street is one block off Church Street. Some of you may remember a restaurant of the same name in the same spot...but that's the only similarity. The new owner also owns the "Sahara" where we ate last year. To read more about the establishment, search under "Spice of Life Spartanburg" and read the Herald-Journal article. If you plan to attend please contact me <patricia159@windstream.net>, or call me (864) 472-2253. Page 4

Roan Mountain Weekend February 3-4, 2012 It's still hot and humid outside, but it's not too soon to start planning for fall and winter events. Summer WILL come to an end! The Club has reserved eight cabins at Roan Mountain State Park this coming February. Only the older cabins will be available this season. They include: one bath, a full kitchen, one downstairs bedroom with double bed, and the loft with two twin beds. Spartanburg ski clubbers enjoyed these older cabins for years before the newer ones were built. The Park has increased the cost next season to $150/weekend night. The breakdown in rates will be: Entire Cabin $150/night (Fri and Sat) $130/night (Taylor-Thurs) Bedroom $90/night Each Loft Bed $30/night This has always been a fun weekend of skiing, hiking, or just relaxing. We have a tentative date for the Club Race on Saturday at Sugar, and there is always the Saturday night party, with beer, wine, and snacks provided. Big Rule: no pets. I will have a sign-up sheet at the September meeting at Chapman. Or, contact me: Carol Mccall mmccall1@windstream.net 828-859-5500 Page 8

Part of their sponsorship package this year includes the VIP Discount Program for all CSC members. Qualifying members of a CSC club can purchase or lease a new Subaru at 2% below dealer cost minus any incentives which are currently being offered. To qualify you must have been a member of the Spartanburg Ski and Outing Club (or other CSC club) for at least 6 months. If you are interested, please notify Sam Linder of your intent to participate. Subaru will mail the VIP information to you, which will include information about local dealers participating in the program. Once you have received the information you can go to a local dealer, pick out the Subaru you want, and the dealer will pull the invoice and let the purchaser know if there are any current incentives. Please take advantage of this benefit that Crescent Racing, through Ron Scott, has secured for all CSC clubs. Page 11

NOTES Any Spartanburg Ski Club member may submit items for publication in the newsletter. Publication deadlines can be found on the pullout calendar included in the newsletter each month. Call Taylor for information on how to submit your newsletter item. Also, don t forget - the club has a tent available for rent. It is an 18 X 20 tent, and it is easy to assemble. We also have 4 tables that can be rented with or without the tent. We have the makings for that special occasion and it is all very reasonably priced! Tent rental is $ 35. Tables can be rented for $5 per table. Remember; don t have a party without the comfort of shade. Your guests will appreciate it and so will the club! For rentals of either tent or tables contact Joy Bobo. The Spartanburg Ski & Outing Club normally meets the first Thursday of each month at 7:00 PM. We are located at the Chapman Cultural Center (West Wing) on East St. John Street in Spartanburg on the first floor. During the summer months (June, July, and August) meetings are frequently held, more informally, at different sites and times. Therefore it is necessary to consult the club web site or a current newsletter for the time and location. April s meeting is held at the Piedmont Club. The club does not provide alcoholic beverages at membership meetings, but members are allowed to bring their own (BYOB) choices of beer or wine. Over-indulgence is not condoned under any circumstances. Cups, ice, and some soft drinks are provided. Thank you.
