November 2013 Happy Thanksgiving Future America s Cup Sailors? Mark Sorenson Youth Sailing Program represents UKSC at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club s Halloween Howler on October 26, 2013. Green Fleet sailors Michael Goralski, Sara Eckhardt, Alexia Hardison, Leo Snell Red, White and Blue Fleet sailors Frank Garcia-Montes, Brianna Wilson, Ethan Osborne The Mark Sorenson Youth Sailing Program sailors are busy practicing and competing regionally. According to Rosa Lamela, the Red, White and Blue kids had a strong performance, with Brianna and Frank taking first and third place prizes in their fleets. Our Green Fleeters did well in spite of windy and wavy conditions. Thanks to everyone, including coaches, for all their help loading and unloading boats. It s much easier with a big Team effort. And thanks to Rosa for her untiring efforts to encourage a lifelong love of sailing in our young people. Way to go! November 2013, Page 1
from the commodore from the rear commodore Fall is in the air, and the Sailing Club is gearing up for another fun regatta and holiday season! The heat of summer is almost over, although a bit of it lingers on. Our seasonal members are coming home to us, and we are glad to have them back. We are all looking forward to the upcoming events. You can read the details in the columns by our Rear Commodore and our Fleet Captain. There should be something there to interest everyone. And don t forget our big holiday in November Thanksgiving at the club! We have more people attending every year, and it s a great way to enjoy the day with friends and family. And of course, we always need volunteers for all our events. Don t be shy about stepping forward. You don t have to know how to run an event. Start as a helper and learn by doing. You may want to work with some of our outside regattas, or our club regattas, or our youth program. The more volunteers we have, the more fun it is, and the easier the work for all. If you don t know where to start, talk to me or to any of our Flag Officers, and we can help. Come enjoy your Club! Sara Kahler Commodore Full Moon Sail Thank you to everyone who helped make our Taco Night and Halloween Party great successes. Special thanks to Sharon Berry and Barbara Bauman who put the Taco Night together, and Sharon Berry again for co-hosting the Halloween party with Dylan Kyle. And thanks to everyone who helped with both of these events. The next clubhouse events are November 9, with the Dock Master Regatta, hosted by the Dockmasters Guy and Sallie, and November 16, with the LUKI, hosted by Ginette Hughes and Dan Kulkowski. Both of these events need volunteers to help setup and clean up. Please contact the hosts to volunteer. With regattas and holidays approaching, there will be no more inexpensive Saturday night dinners until after the new year. For future dinners we ll need volunteers to cook your favorite meal for 40 or so of your close friends. Everyone has enjoyed these great dinners. Step up to volunteer and see your name in the next Signals. Dave White has volunteered to clean and refinish the roofs. We will need consecutive no-rain days. Now that we are moving into the dry season, we need to schedule this soon. We will need several volunteers, so please watch for the dates. Hey Sailors! fleet captain s corner First, a big thanks to everyone who helped with our Adult intro to sailing on October 19th. It started out with a perfect breeze and ended in a rain shower so the participants got to experience a variety of sailing conditions! We had 14 participants join us and hopefully they have been bitten by the sailing bug and will return as members. Thanks to the members who stepped up to teach our participants: Bill Anderson, Jim Enright, Pat McLaughlin, Bob Sandifer & Don Tucgu. Special thanks to Barb and Chip Short and Tiki Watersports for providing the Catalina 14.5, the Picnic Cat, and bringing some fun water toys for the beach. Paul Keever and Key Lime Sailing Club deserve thanks for the loan of a Catalina 22. Bill Anderson brought his own boat to use. It was nice to see In the Black with her sails up. As always our commodore and Dockmasters helped keep the sailors lubricated and organized. Have you taken a walk around the property or down the docks lately? We re actually starting to fill up. Thanks to the hard work of Dewayne Roos and his Dockage/Dry storage committee (Debbie Lloyd, Mike O Conner, Mark Leffler, Guy Lange) we have a new contact member information sheet, a new dock lease, and a Dockage/Dry Storage Rules at a glance sheet. The committee will be contacting all members with boats on the dock or in dry storage to get new agreements and information sheets for all of you. Please respond when they contact you; it s part of our submerged lands lease that we have actual lease agreements with the boats on the dock. Now that our submerged lands lease is finally current, we want to make sure we stay in compliance! The Dockage/Dry Storage Rules At a Glance is available on the Members Only side of the website : www.upperkeyssailingclub.com. What s coming up in November? Our wonderful Dockmaster s Regatta, the Ladies Upper Keys Invitational, and a work day! The work day is not limited to house and grounds. There will BOAT work to be done also. So please contact me to volunteer for that day. Ginette Hughes, Fleet Captain from the vice commodore Your Vice Commodore has been doing a sales job in promoting the club. In October we re ushering in five new members: Mark and Terri Regelmann, regular members. They own a Hobie 18. Gabriela and Paul Hardison, regular members. Steve Lohmayer and Kristi Carter, regular members. They are past members who have rejoined. Steve is a great catamaran sailor. Ben Winkler, associate member. He doesn t own a boat but has already crewed on several mem ber boats. Sarah Eckhardt, junior member. She s already learning some good sailing skills. Say Hi to these new members and make them feel at home. Larry K. for Mary Lou Chambers, Vice Commodore If you want to bring a boat to the club for storage you MUST first contact the dockage/dry storage committee via email, or call the dockmasters and let them know what kind of boat, size, intended usage, etc. You can email them at dockagedrystorage@upperkeyssailingclub.com Don t just show up with your boat. We have assigned storage and may be saving that vacant spot for someone who has already contacted us. Signals is a publication of the Upper Keys Sailing Club, Key Largo, FL.
