Copyrights, Communication Exhibits, and the Fair When presenting an educational presentation, we expect that 4-H ers will explore a variety of sources to get correct information to the public. The 4-H er should be able to answer the judge s question, Where did you get your information? Responses should include the complete source such as: 4-H project material Celebrate Art, rather than just saying in 4-H materials. If you used other Extension publications, reference books or magazines, you should state the titles and issues if appropriate. It is not necessary that you have this printed out, just tell the judge and audience. When presenting a working exhibit, it is also important to give the sources of your information. Remember, if your directions were taken from a copyrighted magazine or book, you CANNOT duplicate the directions and distribute them. You may have purchased the magazine for your use, but that does not grant you permission to duplicate and distribute. `What is the best approach? 1. Make a poster with the directions and include the source of the directions. 2. If you modified the directions and want to provide a handout, give your directions and credit Adapted from... and state the original source. 3. If you did not modify directions, you can not distribute the directions to fairgoers without having copyright permission granted from the source. If permission is granted, that should be noted on the handout piece and the 4-H er brings the letter of permission with them to the fair. Remember to give credit where credit is due and you will have a more educational 4-H experience. Volunteering May Be Tax Deductible As a 4-H volunteer, you may be able to deduct some of your expenses on your federal tax return if you itemize deductions. Out-of-pocket expenses you may be able to deduct include mileage, parking fees and tolls, overnight lodging and meals, uni- forms, and supplies. You can't deduct the cost of your time, even if you lost pay for taking time off from your job in order to volunteer. For more specific information, contact your tax preparer.
