February 15 The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight For Civil Rights This documentary follows the journey of Whitney M. Young Jr. from segregated Kentucky to head of the National Urban League. Mondays @ 9PM Misty Copeland Tuesday, February 16 @ 8PM Revisit the turbulent 1960s, when a revolutionary culture emerged with the Black Panther Party as its vanguard. Stanley Nelson tells the vibrant story of a pivotal movement that feels timely all over again. Fridays @ 8PM February 19 Carole King: Natural Woman Delve into the hit singer-songwriter s life and career from 1960s New York to the music mecca of 70s LA to the present. King joins collaborators and family in new interviews, while rare home movies, performances and photos complete the tapestry. February 12 The Life of Riley B.B. King, born Riley B. King, was one of the most influential and celebrated blues musicians of all time. From his roots as a sharecropper s son, working in the cotton fields of Mississippi, he rose to become a living legend -- the most renowned blues singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer of the past 40 years -- earning the moniker King of the Blues. B.B. King: The Life of Riley explores King s challenging life and career through candid interviews with the man himself, his family, longtime friends, and fellow music contemporaries such as Bono, George Benson, Eric Clapton, Aaron Neville, John Mayer, Bonnie Raitt, Carlos Santana, Ringo Starr, Johnny Winter, and more. February 26 Fats Domino and the Birth of Rock n Roll Discover how Fats Domino s brand of New Orleans rhythm and blues became rock n roll. As popular in the 1950s as Elvis Presley, Domino suffered degradations in the pre-civil rights South and aided integration through his influential music. Friday, February 12 @ 9PM An intimate account of five pivotal years in David Bowie's extensive career, with each year illustrating his inspiration and where his groundbreaking ideas led him as an artist. The film starts with 1971 and the creation of Ziggy Stardust; moves on to 1975, the year of the Young Americans and the Thin White Duke; 1977 and the release of the influential albums Low and Heroes; 1980, the year of Ashes to Ashes, one of the most iconic songs of the decade; and 1983, the year Bowie had unprecedented commercial success with the release of Let s Dance.
New Season Saturdays @ 11PM February 13 Tim McGraw Country superstar Tim McGraw tore through a dozen songs during his taping of Live from the Artists Den, including hits Southern Girl and One of Those Nights as well as his latest single, Lookin For That Girl. Set among the neo-classical columns of the centuryold former bank building, McGraw also previewed a number of songs from his forthcoming album, due out later this year. February 20 Rodrigo Y Gabriela On the eve of the release of their new album, 9 Dead Alive, the incomparable Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela performed at Upper Manhattan's Hispanic Society of America. The two virtuoso musicians played a dazzling 12-song set in the century-old museum's Sorolla Gallery, surrounded by the fourteen paintings that make up Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida's masterwork "Vision of Spain," a celebration of the country's diverse customs. February 27 Lily Allen On a stormy New York City night, the always-cheeky, always-entertaining Lily Allen thrilled the crowd at the Manhattan Center's stunning Grand Ballroom with a typically irresistible spectacle featuring multiple costume changes and a battery of back-up dancers. Friday, February 19 @ 9PM The Caged Bird: The Life and Music of Florence B. Price Recognized as one of the most prominent African American composers of the 20th century alongside William Grant Still, Florence B. Price lived an extraordinary life, triumphing over prejudice and preconceptions to become the first African American woman to have a composition presented by a major symphony. Wednesday, February 24 @ 9PM Nearly everything we do today leaves an indelible digital trail: Where we live. What we search. What we read. Where we go. What we buy. What we say. All of this data is being recorded and stored. The rapid emergence of internet-connected data devices and the massive gathering and analyzing of realtime data are helping to create a central planetary nervous system in which individuals have become human sensors, helping map and measure the planet while, at the same time, mapping intimate details of the lives of each and every one of us. In the technology industry, this phenomenon is commonly known as Big Data. And there is a very human side to this data that often is overlooked or untold. Smithsonian Salutes Ray Charles Friday, February 26 @ 9PM Hear interpretations of the music of Ray Charles, using his own big-band musical arrangements, by renowned as well as up-and-coming artists. The performance, a White House partnership with the Smithsonian, airs from the East Room. 8.1, Sunday, February 28 @ 11AM - 8PM The KPTS Spring Drive kicks-off with a All-Day Marathon of Downton Abbey On Masterpiece Season 6.
